Would it be worth doing SEO training?
Instead of SEO training should I try and train my self up with all the SEO tips that i find here on the internet.
I really can't understand what should i do. Please suggest me something.

Well some posts are pretty obvious. This one for example:
1) link drop
2) the name jhnsmith978 - i doubt the guy is named John Smith
those 2 are enough for me to run a quick search - only takes a few seconds
too bad though as it could have been an interesting thread

I'll continue then....
By the time you've spent 6 months learning SEO it will all be out of date.
SEO has to be learned on the fly, as you go. It is imperative to keep up with current trends and algo tweaks/changes - and make the necessary changes!
What hasn't changed much is the need for links. What has evolved, is where/how to get them

As Northis siad the only basic things to SEO that have not (and prob will not) change are links and content.
Strong, relevant and original content is king, along with strong relevant links. Although these will prob never change as being the top two parts to SEO, as Northie said its the way you get them and pass it all around the internet thats always on the change.

Ok was it just me or did no one get what this ment?
Do you mean without some bit of paper saying I can do SEO I cant and no one will hire me even with the sites I have worked and am working on being ranking well? Or do you mean... No I cant think of anything eals lol.
I think these days when I comes to SEO, most people want to see resaults of what you have done and what you can do, not just some bit of paper saying you have been trained to do SEO last year. How would that work anyway? Do you read up on SEO and search engines? I dont mean to sound heavy handed or anything but really do you? If you do you will know that SEO like search engines is all ways changing, or rather SEO is all ways changing due to search engines changing, which is something you cant teach someone to watch 24/7/365.
So if you need a bit of paper to say you are fully trained in SEO you would never leave your training course lol.
Basically all I'm saying is, yes it may look nice on paper but it looks 110% better in action when it comes to SEO, and I'm sure most others will tell you the same. Learn the basics and the rest is all about keeping up-to-date each and every day!

So, at the risk of rehashing, let me ask this: how can one demonstrate proficiency at SEO?
Formal training is redundant, but I read somewhere else that supplying links to successful page-1-ranked SERPs isn't proof of proficiency either.
Say I am looking to spend money to hire someone to do SEO for my site, how do I know I am getting my money's worth?
Frankly, on a purely personal note, it would seem to me that learning the strategies myself and performing my own optimization is in my best interest, but I can't speak for everyone.
Thoughts?
@ Fyrfli
I guess it really depends how you want to allocate your resources. If you have the time to learn and implement your own SEO efforts, then perhaps doing it on your own is a logical choice
This may not be possible for all business owners though.
If you do outsource, knowing if you're getting your money's worth or not won't be instantaneous as SEO takes time
I think talking it over with the person you're outsourcing to; seeing what they have planned, as well as checking on their progress and results regularly is required. "Inspect what you expect" they say

Case studies. You need to present more than just links to #1 results. You have to show profitable results
How I manage my SEO now is very different from how i used to manage it. Now I will do keyword/competitive analysis and give (sell) this report to the client showing how competitive the market is, what can be done and what results can be achieved. I usually charge on a monthly basis as links and content need to be built up over a period of time. How intense this is depends on how competitive the field is.
On-site SEO (other than new content) is factored in as a 1-time fixed fee with deadline (based on my initial inspection of the site)
I can then demonstrate this as a case study to new prospective clients, and repeat the process for them.
SEO is part of marketing, expect it to have a monthly/yearly budget. Stop taking your product to market and you'll stop selling

I agree. Learning SEO is a non-stop process because Search Engine like google constantly, keeps on improving their algorithm.

I recommend that you should read e-books or articles that are related to SEO and try to apply them in your own blog.

Well, I'm still learning seo tricks and practices and i've been doing it for about a year now, mainly for my own sites but for some family and business friends as well and I think I'm doing okay. Websites I started about a year ago now have a Google page rank of 2, and I'm realizing that yes what was good last year may not be good this year.
SEO is constantly changing, and I notice it, and I barely "try to" do it whenever I can.
I subscribe to various newsletters and read up on trends, watch videos occassionally, compare competitors sites, ask questions in forums and even I realize that SEO IS an on-going thing. It's not just something you can do once and expect it to work. You have to build, and keep on building monthly, like somebody above said, and yes, Ive realized that the backlinks now are valued more by where they come from. Quality over quantity.
I guess an SEO class "for basic starter seo" wouldn't hurt to start off with. I'm just learning on my own, my brother's an expert and has his own firm, which is how I've gotten into it - over-seeing his overhead cost and bottom line sales.

Hello,
I think you can do that you have to learn seo articles and other information about that from internet. here is many things for seo main thing is to promotion of website.
thanks!!
Honestly, classroom type SEO training is quite expensive when you think about the amount of knowledge there is on the Internet. Most if not all the instructors of these trainings, some which are experts in the SEO field have received their expertise & knowledge from the Internet not from a classroom training session.
