For over 5 years it has been public knowledge that google will not tell you true backlink counts. Use their webmaster tools section for serious information

Another great tool for this is the site explorer from yahoo http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/uk/
Site Explorer allows you to explore all the web pages indexed by Yahoo! Search. View the most popular pages from any site, dive into a comprehensive site map, and find pages that link to that site or any page.
This is not only great for finding out about your site but also your competitors sites

I know that Google counts backllinks whether they are relevant links or not...
In terms of SERPs, Google calculates quality inbound links and give more credit to it...

As far as I know, Google gives weightage to backlinks. If from relevant site or edu or gov site, then Google gives them much weightage.

It all comes down to statistics when Google provides a weighting on the value of the back links to your website.
I agree Yahoo Site Explorer is a very useful tool for searching links to your website, but it doesn't really provide you with any analytical information regarding the website which is providing the link, such as the value of the link. But then what do we expect to get for free these days? To be honest I don't think there are many programs out there which provide a full analysis of the website which is linking to you. I could list possibly 100 factors which could affect the value of the link, but how Google weights them is another question.
I wouldn't worry that Google is reporting the number of links to your website incorrectly, I simply keep a list of the websites I have submitted to and check that these URLs are indexed in Google simply by typing the URL into the search box, then I dive into the site further and analyse how valuable the link is.

advanced link manager and advanced web ranking are good programs but they do cost you but then again if you want and need the information they can give you its nothing really.

Nobody knows how google counts back links.. But I knows it gives more weight on back links of the same niche compared to those irrelevant sites..

Absolutely! I completely agree. When analysing what sites to request a link from you should also consider what websites are linking to them and what text they use within the link as well.
I think the outgoing links you choose on a website are also very important as I guess this helps the Google bot calculate how relevant your website is to the ones it is linked to. At the end of the day you ideally want relevant sites to link to you and for you to link to related websites, at least one of these you have complete control over.
If you want to check the backlinks on google, you'd better use google webmaster.
its impossible to know how google calculate the back links
but use google webmaster tool its v. useful

yes and i agree. if you will compare the results from google, yahoo and msn, google has the lowest results. you can use google webmaster tool or try other tools like this one: http://www.dead-links.com/.
Actually Google is very unpredictable and you cannot tell how google do that just simply follow the guidelines.
