I was just wondering that Google might have designed the page rank system based on the premise that higher the links a site has from other sites, higher would be the traffic to that site. However, I see so many sites that are having a very high page rank (since they might be having links from so many other sites) but do not have a very good volume of traffic. Also doesn't this system undermine the importance of good and relevant content on your site? Again I have seen so many sites which do not have a very good content and also might be having wrong grammar in their content, but still those are ranked by google. Please share your thoughts on this.
Relevant for what? PageRank is one of the things that Google considers when ranking a site, the toolbar does not always reflect what Google sees as the site's PR. Also PageRank is only one of about 100 factors that Googl uses.

Relevance? True PageRank is still a factor in Google’s ranking formulas.

The little green bar is almost meaningless in terms of SEO - it is a product of the number of inbound links you have and the number of pages on your site.
True pagerank is one of the many factors (mabybe 100 or more) that google use to decide SERPs.
True page rank is based on the original backrub algorithm and has been widely documented on the internet, although the algorithm in use is a closely guarded secret

Agreed that Google Page Rank is just one factor in overall ranking, but it's usually the one that is staring you right in the face. It's the one that I get excited about when it bumps up. It's the one that is usually a good quick overview of the value of a site.

Dont agree with that if you want real seo and real traffic for more sales you need to forget about PR and work on SERP as PR will come after as a nice little extra

The green bar is meaningless in terms of deciding how to rank results. It is more a measure of traffic probability/page count/IBL count
True page rank, on a scale from 0> to <billions is probably a ranking factor.
You will hear and read about two different forms of page rank
Toolbar Page Rank (TBRR) - the green bar in the google tool bar
True page rank - a weighted algorithm which determine's a page's importance by evaluating inbound and outbound links. It's never 100% accurate as it is made up of cyclic references; therefore many iterations are done.
The average True Page rank of all sites is equal to the damping factor (or derived from)

yes page rank is important it's still a factor in determining search engine results
also a factor in setting how often google comes to visit and index your site.
build up page rank with quantity and quality of backlinks, with relevant anchor text that contains your main keywords
i read some few days ago that the toolbar PR is not the actual PR.google toolbar numbers(1-10)are just labels while actual PR is a number

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value.Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don’t match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search

There is no need to copy and paste information that is already posted on other sites, especially without citing your source. In this case the information can be found on the original PageRank paper. http://infolab.stanford.edu/~backrub/google.html
There are many factors but the most effective is relevant links.IMO
Google ranks by how good a website is and you won't get ranked higher by looking at each of Googles rules and trying to win Google over. You need to focus on making a good website and using a good webmaster who doesnt rip you off. Focus less on Google because you can't control it or change it. Rankings will come automatically!
I tell me clients that all the time. There is no use in pushing the issue and trying to find a fast way to the top. Google ranks on how old a website is also thats one thing you can't change so patience is a virtue!
Most of us are unaware of the fact that Google toolbar Page Rank (PR) varies from Google actual (internal) Page Rank. Within Google’s actual databases, each of your pages is stored and does have some form of numerical Page Rank calculated value. This is quite likely to differ from the toolbar page rank. It seems to be confusing as most of us refer to the toolbar for the relevancy of the page but in fact the actual Page Rank values are some decimal numbers such as 3.831 which might be shown as PR 4/10 or PR 3/10 on the toolbar scale.
Google Page Rank is not always an indication of good traffic for your website. As the saying goes, “Good Sites get High PR, but not all High PR sites are good.” Traffic is more affected by your content and other factors which leads to conversion.
