Rejoice and celebrate with me!
I've achieved #1 ranking for my main key term in my new site, among 25.9 million results.
Not such a high traffic term but I'm ahead of heaps of .gov and .edu sites. I'm ahead of the state librarys that deal in this stuff.
Australian Explorers is the term.
Go Joomla!
I've got over 800 copy and pasted pages and about 10 pages that I wrote myself.
I'm aware of only one good backlink, a PR4 and relevant.
So I'm putting my success down to the way Joomla sets out the site. Gypsy said Joomla is good for SEO.
Go the Gypsy!

on ya Laurie!! (though u come up number 4 for me)
Where did you get those 800 pages from? None copyrighted I hope
Suggest you put the word search next to the search box - not very evident otherwise.

Thanks matte.
Yeah! Dropped back down to #6 overnight. Been hovering around #6 to #8 for a while. Felt real good, ya know, at #1. Nearly fell off my swivel chair.
Very pleasing to be on page 1.
Yes, the copyright issues are OK. It's all in the public domain because it's over 100 years since the death of the original copyright owners.
I'll have a go at the search box. Joomla make it a bit awkward. The search function was a real problem. The search box in each journal has to search only that section of the database. A very nice young lady from the Australian Joomla Users Group (JUG) made it up for me. It's not perfect, but it works OK.
I can't even find the search box?
what about trying to add a adsense for search box - bring us a few pennies
in any case, congrats Laurie - well done!

Ah! Ya see, the search boxes are only on the journal pages. Unique search box to each explorer's journal.
I couldn't manage matte's suggestion so simply added the word search in the boxes. Best I could do.
Hoping to get a bit of traffic and then add some ads. A fair bit more work to do to get the traffic up. I hope to have around 5,000 pages by the time I'm finished developing the site.
However, I doubt that adsense is the way to go. Semantically targeted ads in this niche seem not to be appropriate. May try some affiliate links.
Any thoughts on how to determine targeting.
And thanks for the well wishes, Nic.
I too am a Joomla fan. Although, we have had to tweak the template we chose for SEO. Actually it has been quite a learning process. Gratz on the making the front page!
You're not in the top 10 here... however, the results are coming in from canada, so it's to be expected

Thanks for that Rejx. Yes, I got a .com.au domain for the Australian geotargeted SEO. Guess that's the reason.
Changes to #1 and #6. Different data centres, I guess.
Congratulations to you...

Congrats from me too
Although I kind of dislike Joomla ( for reasons other than SEO-related ), but hey - it's more important you broke trough the millions on top !

Thanks Fellas.
I'm on page 2 and three for a couple of other terms, so once I get a bit more content up I'll distribute some articles. That should help.
Nice job, Hope it will stay on first page for a long time..
Congratulations to you!!
