Hi all, im a noob here, 4 months ago i knew absolutely nothing about building websites or SEO, i have created 3 websites for my business and im trying to optimize them, the links are in my sig line. 2 of my sites are performing well and are getting good rankings, but the third wwwdotgoldcoastcharterfishingdotcom is about 30 pages in. the search term im using is "gold coast fishing charters" could anyone shed some light on why this page wont move up.
Also could anyone suggest a link to a page that explains all the different terminology relating to SEO, things like "on page optimization", "off page optimization" and other terminology, i had no idea the internet was so complicated.
My main site truebluefishing.com.au performs well and sometimes ranks at no.3, but is usually on the 2nd page, any tips to make it stay on the 1st page or better still, make it number one would be highly appreciated. we are a new business so at this stage i cant really afford to pay someone to do it, and from what ive heard a lot of companies that offer these services dont do a very good job. any tips or advice would be highly appreciated

First off.... why 3 sites? It is much better to build one quality site than 3 (unless they aren't related topically which I assume your are) - not only is it easier to manage, but search engines tend to give larger sites with greater resources/value more weight than smaller ones. I am not a fan of having a bunch of sattellite sites...

SEO is about targeting terms that will most likely bring us targeted traffic that will convert - so first off get into Keyword research - good place to start learning.

We also have a post in the blog on; How to learn SEO

And since I am being nice today, drop me a private message with yer email and I shall send a copy of my SEO book over (great or beginners) ....

1. I am one of 'those' companies and feel we do a GREAT job ;0)
2. A business that can't afford marketing is not a good thing... (yikes)
3. SEO is a solid long term internet marketing approach with higher ROI than most.

So, if it is someone in-house, or a contractor/consultant - it must be understood for long term internet viability. It will cost you ultimately in terms of time and/or money... but that's business.

1st site is about general fishing charters, 2nd site is specifically related to Shark fishing only, not really sure why i built the 3rd, the domain name was available and i liked it so i grabbed it and built another site, my thinking was if i could get 2 or 3 sites well optimized it might bring in more bookings, people tend to view a few charter fishing sites then pick which one appeals to them most.

Pretty sure im using the right keywords, basically i looked at our busiest competitors and what keywords they were using. my main website is performing well, but if i can improve it more that will be great.

Its not that we cant afford marketing, but being a new business we have a limited budget, my thinking is, if i can do it successfully my self for not much money, why pay someone. i dont mind spending a few hours a day at the computer. I have taken this as a new challenge and have found the world of SEO and websites to be quite interesting. So far my internet advertising campaign has cost me less than $500AU. and 2 of my sites are getting top 20 rankings on google for the common search terms, sometimes i even pop up in the top 10
At the moment we are only a small business, as the company grows we will commit more cash to marketing.
I think im heding in the right direction with my SEO campaign, this forum is a good help im finding a lot of useful info here. I have submitted my sites to many business directories and have created reciprocal links with a few similar sites. My main goal is to acheive top 10 rankings on major search engines all the time. i will continue my free campaign and see how i go. if i cant achieve this tyhen i may look towards paying a proffessional to do it for us.

Agree, the internet is already working well for us.
