I've also noticed that chrome is constantly accessing my hard drive - i can hear the bloody thing working away....also the CPU usage spikes periodically, inline with the hard drive usage.
I tested different applications both at work and at home - originally i thought it may have been the millions of ajax requests the gmail makes....but.....
It was Chrome:
I open it up, the activity starts - regardless of which sites (or how many sites) are open. Even if i'm viewing the speed dial page with no 'real' web pages open
I close it down, the activity stops
I'm going to go an see if anyone else has experienced this and what, if anything, they have to say about it

Thanks for that Northie. Thought it may have just been me.
Had several tabs open. HD was working overtime. Opened Process Explorer. Two of the open instances of Chrome kept spiking the CPU.
I progressively closed tabs till the HD steadied down.
According to the Chrome comic, there is a feature to see if a tab is running a lot of stuff. Any idea where to find that?
Thanks,
Laurie.

Yep
Chrome runs in the OS as a separate process for each tab - so if you have 3 tabs open you'll see 3 intances of chrome in the normal OS task manager (process window)
This allows chrome to also display these, in a slightly more elegant way
To see this list click on the page icon to the right of the url box then go to developer > task manager
Keyboard short-cut : Shift+Esc
Hope this helps

Yeah, thanks, Northie. Found that.
The CPR spike does seem to coincide with the rattling of the HD.
It could also be the antivirus database update. But it doesn't seem to occur when only FF is open.
My tests are way to rough to determine the fate of Google's new initiative or even for me to make a decision for myself.
I see, as you suggested, that the Chrome feature is just a different way of displaying the same old info, only not as much info in the window. In time we'll distinguish between the genuine elements of Google Chrome and the sales hype.
As far as I can see, the spell check underlines incorrect words but fails to give alternative spelling. This alone is sufficient to compel a fella who never learned to spell, to stick with FF. Of course, that's not a security issue.

Laurie.

Google admits Chrome tracks web addresses
articleyesterday from PC Pro
Google has admitted the auto-suggest feature of Chrome's Omnibox gives it potential access to users' keystrokes, providing the company with a wealth of information on the browsing habits of its users.

No because I used the link in the web pages. They work in all the others but not in the Google Chrome.
Could track keystrokes??
Not that I care about google tracking them, but that's just asking for a whole slew of hackers to jump all over this.
Also, I wonder if when you have three tabs open and see three instances of it running in your task manager... if it HAS to do this in order to properly track the surfing habits on each tab. My guess is 'yes', and it's going to crash eventually.
I won't even bother downloading it....

Got rid of Chrome. Hope I'm not blaming the innocent.
When Chrome is open it periodically seems to be sending information back to base. Mega information, that is, not just user info.
When Chrome is not open, FF, after a while, will run an extra instance, not on the task bar, at 50% CPU. Won't stop till I kill the process in Process Explorer.
Dunno what's on, but I reckon I'm better off without Chrome. I'll see in a day or two how things go without Chrome.

Laurie.

I've heard nothing but bad about chrome, but I didn't hear it was sending keystrokes back to base.
google storing our credit card numbers and passwords for us, all cached in a shipping container slapped on the side of an exchange.
nice eh?
wonder who'll be the first have their credit drained.
won't be me, that's for sure.
