Hi all, have any of you tried getting a property listed on Google Earth? Or maps for that matter? I have been trying for approx 2 months now to get my property listed, being that it is a game reserve i cant exactly submit a street addy anywhere
So in google maps i have tried placing the marker in correct place but i cant get to step 2 because google cant add locations to that area yet. Fair enough, it is a US company, so it only works for the US.
To my dismay though, not even google earth will display my listings, 2 of our lodges are active with over 30 impressions each... they do not display on google earth or google maps? Everyone from our competition to so balloonists have clearly visible listing all around our area but we do not feature. Is there some simple step other than the process of going through google business centre (done) that i am missing? the co-ords for the place im trying to list is as follows - 33 28'09.02" S
- 26 15'15.38" E
Thats the entrance to the reserve
These are the co-ords to a lodge thats is "apparently" active - just not visibly.
- 33 24'33.30" S
- 26 12'53.75" E
These are taken at 700m (Eye alt)
Any ideas will be met with thanks

To start, Google Earth want digital coordinates. If you use other formats it pretty much ignores you. The following site will do the conversion for you.
http://andrew.hedges.name/experiments/convert_lat_long/
With digital coordinates entered you'll get a change to verify instantly by phone or a couple weeks by postcard. It all worked for me.

Northie - No i havent, i will though. I thought those were used only if you wanted people to download customized information about an area which google would not display. Where would i submit the kml?
Matt - it does exist... kinda
you will probably find that google earth is not allowed to detail that area... which i understand
I am sure there are places in the states that somehow dont get any high res photos taken (take places where britney spears goes).... its all a conspiracy!!! BWAHAHHA
Fragos - I already did that and confirmed via sms, 2 places are active and verified, 1 is flagged and another just wont accept the mobile number. Thanks for the converter, that will come in handy i am sure.

UPDATE: Mkay, i have started playing and figured out how to make a wall... pretty cool, unfortunately the long/lat converter suggested by fragos lands the wall somewhere in the middle of the atlantic... i will see if i can find another

Thanks Northie, tried that now and no luck... Antarctica is pretty though
The sample kml file i am looking at has its longitude/latitude formatted like so -122.0839597145766
The link to Google maps gives me the degrees/minutes/seconds formatted like so - 33 2433.30"
The site recommended by fragos looks like this 38.898556
I end up in the ocean when i use the last two (different places in the ocean
) If it at all helps you spot what im doing wrong, this is the relevant code in the sample kml
Code: html
<Placemark>

<visibility>0</visibility>

If the <tessellate> tag has a value of 1, the line will contour to the underlying terrain

<LookAt>
<longitude>-112.0822680013139</longitude>
<latitude>36.09825589333556</latitude>
<altitude>0</altitude>
<range>2889.145007690472</range>
<tilt>62.04855796276328</tilt>
<heading>103.8120432044965</heading>
</LookAt>
<LineString>
<tessellate>1</tessellate>
<coordinates> -112.0814237830345,36.10677870477137,0
-112.0870267752693,36.0905099328766,0 </coordinates>
</LineString>
</Placemark>
This is the code i have
Code: html
<Placemark>

Transparent green wall with yellow outlines

<styleUrl>#yellowLineGreenPoly</styleUrl>
<LineString>
<extrude>1</extrude>
<tessellate>1</tessellate>
<altitudeMode>absolute</altitudeMode>
<coordinates>
-33 2814.01",26 1515.32",1000
-33 2812.97",26 1516.16",2000
</coordinates>
</LineString>
</Placemark>
My script is directly from a sample path kml, notice how the co-ords are the same length and format in the sample kml, i cant figure out how to convert my co-ords into that format. Needless to say the color code used here is also beyond me, it aint hex or cmyk or rgb... eish.

Click on the link in my previous post, it goes to somewhere near Port Elizabeth in SA
I reckon the co-ords you want are
-33 24'33.30 [here a - sign indicates south of the equator]
26 12'53.75 [here a - sign indicates west on the meridian, but you want to go east so keep it positive]

Ryan,
Did you ever get on the map, "googly" speaking.
I thought about this topic the other day, when hubby found our house on the map. Freaky. He didn't get the view I got - the top of our house in our neighborhood (and I could tell how old the photo was by where our car was parked and how bare our garden was.) He found our house, as if someone had taken a picture of it across the street, but it was in a 360 degree view, too. The only way we could tell the picture wasn't taken from across the street was our sedan looked more like a squat hatchback, and there were creases on the side, as if the car was beginning to be folded. (Also helps that the paint job on the house was too good to be real.
)
I'm not so sure that they can't find Brittney on a map, except I've never seen people in any places I've searched. I'm now curious if you can get your site on Google Earth, can I see any rhinos or elephants roaming around? If we can, what do they look like from eye level on the map?!

lol... no. I got to making the kml's with pretty 3d buildings and paths going through to the different lodges (for people to download) but then i got stumped by my boss
I saw that view you are talking about on a video demonstrating google android (windows mobiles nemesis in the making) and it really is incredible... the pda had a compass thingy in it so that the camera angle changes as the pda does... very cool, like looking through a little window. Sadly though, you will not see such things in South Africa for a long time to come.
The difference between the USA maps on Google and South Africa is quite large, many functions and detail are provided for the US specifically... eg, go to washington DC, you can zoom in to the point where you can clearly see lines in the streets (and people), in SA you are lucky if you get a decent photo close enough to make out the shape of a swimming pool. So if you were fortunate enough to spot a Rhino or Elephant it would look like nothing more than a grey rock. Sorry to disappoint
Blaming Google will make you feel better though

I think Google Earth will have to consider the rest of the world closely, ASAP. If they don't, how will all the rich folks figure out which safari they want to go on, which mountain to climb, are they really up for a walkabout or roughing it on some remote island, or are they more inline with going on a cruise, or shopping in some chic capital city?
Meanwhile, we still need to know good close range trips -- New Jersey or state parks?!

lol... easy tiger, you may end up with an army of travel agents breaking down your door
You would be amazed by how many people just call in and say what they want to do, get a website, looks good... and off they go. Google earth is a tool for seeing who has the biggest swimming pool in your name neighborhood - well, at least for the time being
