Vote - Your Opinion Matters

I am working on some new presentations for our target customers and I could use your opinion - In regards to online shopping, do you feel more strongly about finding a good deal or online security.

Re: Vote - Your Opinion Matters

That's a hard 1

If 2 stores appear secure then my vote is for the good deal

However i won't buy from any site that seems shady no matter how good the deal is

IMO it doesn't take that much to make a store feel secure, and anyone serious about ecommerce will focus on implementing that during their site building process

When i buy i ...

1) first look at the site- within 5-10 seconds I'll know whether or not the site seems secure enough for me.
2) if it is, I'll look around at what they have. If not i move onto the next site
3) once i found a few sites that i would buy from based on security, then do i evaluate their deals

Re: Vote - Your Opinion Matters

Nic, are you saying (consciously or sub-consciously) that security initially weighs heavier than the deal? Obviously there is more to my post, which I will further comment on later, but I would certainly like to hear from more people

Yes

My first consideration is security

Then the deal

But if 2 websites show an adequate level of security and one has better deals i will opt for the better deal

even if one seems more secure then the other at a certain point i opt for the deal if both meet an adequate level of security (if that makes sense)

Re: Vote - Your Opinion Matters

I think the question needs more clarification and more thought - perhaps implying that the site , on the face of it, imparts the same amount of TRUST - by way of presentation.

So perhaps it should be couched as two identical sites, one promoting SSL security icons etc and the other focussed on deals.

If that were the summisation, I go the deals

Re: Vote - Your Opinion Matters

Hi Matt, I apologize for the cryptic post, nowadays its getting hard to post anything public, especially when competitors follow along in the shadows.  A case of my thoughts today, implemented on their site tomorrow.

You have the right mindset, I am just trying to gather some additional factors that I can test in conjunction with my iperceptions surveys

Re: Vote - Your Opinion Matters

Ive got to go with security first
A good deal is all well and good if  the security is there.
No good deal  regardless of how cheap an item is if you don,t get what your paying for or lose your money etc.

Re: Vote - Your Opinion Matters

depends also on what is security - https only or other aspects that are promoted by logos etc? At what stage do we make that decision - once we get to the cart or when we are browsing the site.

Seems a case for split testing blinka

Re: Vote - Your Opinion Matters

the deal captures my attention then the security follows in the purchasing process for me.

many times I found what i am looking for and then run at some point when trying to buy because of a bad feeling

personally feel safer when paying via a " brand " paypal etc rather than giving credit card details to a site

Re: Vote - Your Opinion Matters

Like Allenion, a good deal will usually get my attention first. However, being someone who has experienced identity theft, security is by far, more important to me

I have paid a higher price for things only because the security measures they implemented made me feel more secure.

My vote for one or the other would go to security

Re: Vote - Your Opinion Matters

Security is important to me.

I've just purchased a new camera...and opted to pay around $100 more and know that I had a service center in my country.

I read the customer reviews from each of the websites I could choose from and also based my final decision on the feedback each customer gave.

But that's me!

Re: Vote - Your Opinion Matters

I would like to answer your question,  too. Itīs a difficult one, because Iīm not a big fan of online-shopping.
I guess itīs the good deal, cause although I know a few things about e-commerce I donīt know much enough about the security-technology(I guess, I can order via ssl while having a keylogger-virus installed at the same time, really).

Beside, I think there are more factors to make me become a customer: reputation, usability and SEO.

Security.

I think most people will shy away from a site that doesn't appear secure.  The big question aught to be "what makes people feel comfortable with the security of a site?".

Re: Vote - Your Opinion Matters

@ Steven_A_S I was talking to my better half about that and its her opinion that while its important to portray the site as being secure at a milestone like checkout, over emphasis (on-page) has the potential to set off alarm bells. We are more engaged in task completion metrics and improvements than we are SEO stuff. So one thing we have been researching is use of trust seals outside of the checkout processes and I am starting to feel that on one hand they could help, and on the other hand they could possibly scare people off

A few days ago I was doing some online shopping and when I was all done Peggy nailed me with a question that still bugs me. When I was all done she said: “ok you just spent thousands of dollars online, prior to checkout did you ever look to see how secure the site was e.g. trust seals etc.” so I gave her an honest (smart ass) answer which was no, I let the force guide me.

One was a name brand, one was a place I have shopped at before and the other one had a prominent phone number and a picture of the business. The last one has really got me thinking about why I choose them for my purchase, in the end and after all of the price comparisons I simply went for the best deal.

Re: Vote - Your Opinion Matters

Good deal! Of course, I'm not buying anything, no matter how good the deal is, unless I see evidence od security precautions. Even then, we all know it's a gamble -- some of the biggest financial institutions have been hacked, so if we want it, we just hope we get it securely.

Re: Vote - Your Opinion Matters

dont forget that most buyers still do not know how to identify a secure site. Trust plays a major role ,clear contact details including a telephone number helps here. When buying online does your site answer ever question that a shop assistant could - almost impossible - therefore the contact comes into play plus the branded checkout.

Once a product has been purchased what about returns. With a local shop a take it back, clear instructions online helps with hte trust

That’s a good talking point. While its important to have that information easily accessible online, not everyone reads the information prior to purchase. We include an abbreviated return policy in the electronic receipt with a link back to the full policy. You can easily setup an auto responder to deliver important information to the consumer and I strongly believe that follow up and communication after the sale is just as important as the sale itself. It will instill confidence in the purchaser. Once you have forged a relationship with a first time customer they will be even more inclined to come back and purchase again.
