found the home page quite dull -- not inspiring me to delve any further.

Too much black and the images in the flash are almost below the fold.

On your repeating background images, I'd consider trimming the height of the image down to 1 pixel when you don't have a pattern you want to preserve.  This will keep the file size down and allow the background to load faster.  Sure it's not that big to start with, but every little bit adds up.  Also, I've mentioned this elsewhere, but transparent .png files don't do very well in IE6 or below, and tends to ruin the effect you're going for.  You may want to consider converting them to transparent .gif files.  If you don't have a version of IE6 around to test on, you may want to try running it through http://browsershots.org/

You may want to change the colors of your links especially when they appear in the dark areas, as they appear dark and hard to read.

You're not the same Barry Mitchell who used to work in radio are you?? In 1997 I was at a radio station in Skipton where for a short time the PC was a guy called Barry Mitchell........

The site took around 1 hour to design.

First off I would remove that extra >. Also your display in "homeright" has this odd bug where if I go below "thumbnail" the text in "label" changes, but the background image in "homeright" stays the same. it seems the photo number in "label" gets bigger the more I go down.

I would get rid of that black box in the background and just have it pure white. Also, the "Add this page to your Favourites" in photographs.php is hard to read. It needs to be brighter.

Ok markup fixed .. couple of other stupid mistakes ..

nm its all good now!!

The site is a bit slow.
The look is interesting, and the black color  value the photos.
The image quality is very good, a good collection of photographs.
