I understand the concept of distributing your own content (in the form of articles) in order to gain more taffic to your site, but how does this affect search engine rankings?
I write an article, publish it on my site, then submit it to as many article directories as i can. Lets say that 100 other sites publish my article on their site. Thats 100 one way links to my site - which is great! But, does the fact that this article now appears 100 times over the internet mean that its importance on the major search engines decreases? (i know they favor original content). Or does the fact that the article appeared on my site first, mean my version of the article will not be affected?
Writing an article can only help. I wrote an article titlled "hair loss:getting to the root of the problem" about 6 weeks ago. If you type in that phrase there are over 2000 pages that link to my article. Not bad for a couple hours of work. I dont see any reason why a SE would penalize you for. Plus the links arent directed to your site. What you're doing is providing a venue for others interested in what you sell to read about it. I used PRWEB.com and its free. You cant get better that.

WC -- I just posted one of my articles to PRWEB.com as you suggested. When I went through the process, I didn't see how posting the article will results in links to my website. Did I miss something? What did you do to get the link?

It can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to see the results from posting an article. I am familiar with using PR Web as a resource for press release distribution. They have several options on distribution ranging from free to $80. Depending on what you are promoting would determine the level you participate at.
When I published my last book I found it beneficial to pay for the position.
Article distribution has proven very effective for positioning for my site.

brucelee23,
I know that linking to your article on your site in yourresourcebox is good way of escaping search engine banning (if at all they will ban for the article being o 100 sites)
I asked the same question a wile ago in one search engine forums. They answered me the above answer. If you want I can post a link to that forum thread.

I wouldn't post an article to PRWEB. That's not what the service is for. PRWEB is used to relay Press Releases. There is a difference between the two. If you'd like me to explain then just ask.
Typically PRWeb will not allow you to release an article. They will allow you to release a tip sheet, but it needs to be in the proper format. The reason PRWeb is still successful is because they have a good editorial staff.

Search "free reprint articles" in any se and you'll get a huge list. You should also download Article Distributor from After 5 Web Design. It is a free, semi-autonomous article submission application I wrote that will submit articles to about 200 article directories that use the Article Dashboard directory script.
I hope that's not too much like an advertisement... :/

Please help me... I just don't get this "article submission" thing...
From what I can tell, anyone could write any old rubbish containing a link back to their website (OK the "article" has to look and sound good!) post the article on some of those websites and, bingo, it does you the power of good!
How? Why? Surely search engines know what is happening here? The websites that host these articles seem to be just one step up from those crappy "directory style" websites full of affiliate links or an elaborate free-for-all links page..
AND, going back to brucelee23's original point, there is the potential problem of duplicate content etc.
In spite of all this, I do actually want to try it myself
- I just don't understand the mechanics of why it is supposed to work so well.
Should you have a duplicate of your "article" on your website first, wait until that has been spidered, and THEN submit the article?
Has anyone written an article about why writing an article is not a good idea? [joke!]
I am not having a go here, it's just one of the (many) things I don't understand! Any advice would be greatfully received.

Their releases do get picked up by Google News pretty quickly.
At first they didn't seem to do clickable links, and don't carry html, but do now seem to make http://www links active ones.
Once submitted they also give you the chance to publish it instantly on a press forum too.
Roger
And forgot to mention it's free too.

If you have a niche website, and get income from adsense, yes there is a potential problem, which I've never seen mentioned - anywhere.
Most advertisers have a set budget per day. Once used you tend to get irrelevant ads for the remainder of the day on your site.
Many article directories carry adsense around each article, and the ads are often the same as your site.
If the site is popular enough and people are genuinely interested in your niche, that's one ad / revenue less for you if people view their ad.
There is a press release service that gets thousands of hits a day. And because 4 of the top 5 viewed articles are mine and seem to be permantly displayed, the ads on the first page are on my subject.
Which has two downsides - the advertisers click through rate is going to be really low, but also what clicks they do get are clicks I might not. Which I guess also means that some people will click their ads out of curiosity, and it doesn't do the advertiser much good compared to someone who has actually found the subject deliberately via a search engine.
Hope that makes sense!

G'day SWC76801.
Did I miss something?
Yes, you did.
Have a look at some articals on this or some other site and see the author's bio box at the end. You've got to put a live link in there.
Regards,
Laurie.

I just opened my store in April and learned about the importance of articles. We've written and submitted three articles and although we aren't ranking well yet on google for our keywords, our articles are. I'm a believer and hope to keep on writing!
Write a high quality article which deals with the business you are dealing. Do not host in your own site, instead give them to free Article submission sites such as Ezine articles. Your articles can contain two links pointed towards your site. This will bring targeted traffic to your site as well as increase your page rank..
