Social media is great for traffic... but it is notoriously poor as far as conversion rates. One truly needs to understand the goals of the program to really get anything out of it. SMM is also not an overnight thing (unless U know a power user).
One should also have aligned their cross over programs with thier SMM to fully realize it's value. These include;
SEO
Customer Service Management (CRM)
Research and Development (R&D)
Reputation Management
The main purpose of Social Media Marketing is branding/authority building and the above are secondary considerations to leverage other departments and maximize the budgets therein.
For those that missed it, read up on the Value of Social Media Marketing.
It is not a one trick pony, nor is it primarily about conversions.... one needs to have a plan before simply spamming social media/networks with their pages and ultimately polute the brand and create reputation management issues....

Well, if your main point is about getting traffic to websites as quickly as possible, nothing can be compared with the PPC and also CPM programs. In both cases, you can have visitors within hours of launching a website.
Yes too true... you can get high traffic through social media sites but really poor conversion rates
I would explain with an example...
A single promotional page on my site gets 100s of visitors per day through social media site, but the bounce rate is always in 90s
I am trying hard to optimize my page to bring that in 80s,
what I did was... I just happen to re arrange my links where the people would end up... and added eye catching images over the links.
At the very bottom of the page I added the ads, that would catch the attention when the person in through with the content. Would you believe, a bottom leaderboard gets me conversions....
So the idea is... you can get high amount of traffic from social media sites and hold on to that traffic by just studying the traffic trends and using design tips to flow that traffic to other areas.
See these pages.... before---> http://decipheringlife.com/theme-pages/ … tions2.htm
after----> http://decipheringlife.com/theme-pages/ … tions1.htm
plus I used the traffic exchange system on these pages, now this is sheer multiplication of the traffic and I can target that traffic to anywhere I like.
Hope that helps....
Social media sites are the best way to get the traffic with a minimum effort, you just have to find ways to use that traffic for your benefit.
Editted---> according to the statistics, the above experiment was able to reduce the bounce rate, but it also reduced my conversions. Ie; I was able to catch visitors attention towards my toolbar earlier and managed to get a few installations. But rather seeing my toolbar people were obviously interested in the links flaunted there. SO i have now removed the links and let my conversions go up a bit.

One must define what kind of traffic would be GREAT for his site and act accordingly!
Do you think that 100.000+ unique visits per day means something if they are NOT
targeted? Yes, they mean your server might pop and you might run into financial
problems because of higher hosting costs ... But in terms of conversion rate numbers
are second most important ... First is how targeted your visitors are! I'm not for high
traffic, I'm for moderate targeted traffic ... 100 visitors per day that got EXACTLY what
they were looking for are much better than 10.000+ that will hit "BACK" after 5 seconds!
For me, the best promotion is to place link to my page on sites that offer EXACTLY the
content I myself offer ... Later I will go into payed advertising but again, it will be highly
targeted (which surprisingly cost much less than broad targeting)
The quickest way to get traffic is Paid Advertising on top search engines like Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and Microsoft adCenter.
But, if you are looking for free ways (though they take some time for traffic building) then try following techniques;
-Banner/Link Exchange program
-Blogs participation
-Article submissions
-Submit your site to any related niche directories
-Post free classified ads on related sites
-Sending emails with signatures (website link)
-Emailing promotional newsletters to targeted customers (but avoid spamming)
-Optimize your each page for specific keyword/key phrase
Except the last two options, others do not generate massive traffics, they are just for link popularity that would benefit you with SERP's. Advertising is just good for people who are selling big products or are looking for long term relationsips.
Like if you sell cars, then you should go for paid advertisements as a single product sale would leave you more than what you have spent. If you are just looking for traffic to earn through Ads, refferals or such activities then these will just empty your pockets.
you failed to mention,
FORUMS
SOCIAL MEDIA NETWORKING
these are the two things that would fetch you huge traffics and ofcourse " YOUR CONTENT NEEDS TO BE IMPRESSIVE FIRST "

I have mentioned some QUICKEST and effective ways that mostly work for website traffic building. Forums and Social Media Networking are also helping hands and work well but, for this very situation, they should be kept aside. cipher

No disrespect meant, but how are the QUICK?
It takes years to get some link popularity and building mailing lists, blog participation, article submissions... I fail to get it.
These are slow and steady ways of permanent genuine traffic, but by no means they are going to help you in short run.

Best way to get traffic in my opinion is to find tons of sites that offer site reviews and submit your site... conversion rate is a bit below 0% and people will quickly learn to hate you but if its short term boost in traffic you are after, thats the way forward
just kidding.
I reckon people should just build up to high traffic, target your keywords properly and advertise your product well - you find that the people who come to your site are actually looking for the product you sell, high traffic with high conversions... it takes time but it is effective.

Yes of course, except paid advertising, the free techniques take time for a website to be traffic rich (I have mentioned it in my original post) and it also requires patience. No website can become “KING IN ONE NIGHT”

I get traffic from blog commenting. It is also a good way of building links if you post to site with dofollow tag.

True, I am myself doing this regularly, it bring traffic okay, but majorly it provides you valueable links.
These blogs are not necessarily allowing dofollow links, so I use blogfinder tool to find dofollow allowing blogs sometimes.

totally agreed but from my point of view, i rather suggest why spend money, when there is so much you can do about it.
All you need is spend some time with SEO, hard work really pays off.
Tips:
well here let give you some few tips how to add manually using your browser lol
Code:
1- http://www.websiteoutlook.com/www.yoursite.com 2- http://www.statbrain.com/www.yoursite.com 3- http://www.builtwith.com/?yoursite.com 4- http://snapshot.compete.com/yoursite.com 5- http://www.aboutus.org/yoursite.com 6- http://www.quantcast.com/yoursite.com 7- http://www.cubestat.com/www.yoursite.com 8- http://whois.tools4noobs.com/info/yoursite.com or simply use www.google.com/addurl www.google.co.in/addurl www.google.it/addurl try submitting to whole wide world example: want to submit to google china www.google.cn/addurl try submitting like that to every country, this way your site is more exposed, rather submitting only to www.google.com/addurl
I am sure the quickest way is Social Bookmarking..
