Hidden URL's in source code
Hi,
I recently traded links with another site and I noticed something strange (at least to me). When you hover over any link on his site, the URL doesn't appear in the lower-left side of the screen in the status bar of my computer. When I look at his source code, and use Edit | Find and enter the URL to my site, nothing is found. How can this be? Is a search engine crawler even going to be able to find my URL which resides on his link page? Funny thing is, is when I click on the link text for my site, it takes me there.
Here's his link page:
http://www.petsittersnottingham.co.uk/# … 4527979684
Just go to any link there, navigate to the site by clicking on the link, and then go back to the link page and use Edit | Find while looking at his source code and see if it finds the URL.
Any ideas??

Re: Hidden URL's in source code
Well if you have done an exchange of links with him for the seo purpose of exchanging links then disable/remove the link from your site.
No the se's will not find the links to the other sites on his page. He is using js to display a flash set up of the links. The links work as you mentioned but the links are not written into the code of the page and the result is
nothing to read=nothing to follow.

This is exactly why I don't bother trading links anymore. To much seo-based linking decisions rather than good old 'partnering'.

Took me a little bit, here is the actual page the links reside on http://www.petsittersnottingham.co.uk/l … 4527979684

Re: Hidden URL's in source code
I have found that 80% of link invitations are crap - poor pages, three way links with mine in some obscure directory, no follow, JS or even taken down after a week.....

Well it is an interesting case. Seems that they are trying to show the search engines the HTML equvalents of the page... and though that HTML page is indexed, searching the text in the link to your, brings back butkis. and searching Google for the link text produces nada as well
If I had to guess, I'd say that link is worthless.....

Re: Hidden URL's in source code
Gypsy, what took you so long,
Followed your research and found that the actual page url now redirects to the original page listed. You can still visit and view the actual page if you have JS disabled.
With JS disabled the links listed at the bottom of the pages all have rel="nofollow" attached to them. Still no good as far as SEO for ya GP, possible traffic only.
Code: html
href="#link%20exchange" title='link exchange' rel='nofollow' onclick="SM.navigateTo('4527979684');return false;"><img
src='/_app/8913/images/sitebutton.gif' alt='link exchange' width='1' height='1' border='0' /></a><aThe only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible

Actually you are just looking at the footer navigation links...those are nofollowed ... the links to his site aren't;
Code: html
<p><a href="http://www.basket4picnic.com/pet-carrier/">www.pets4life.co.uk</a></p>
<p></p>
<p><a href="http://www.basket4picnic.com/pet-carrier/">Stylish pet carriers do not have to be expensive! Get yours at a fraction of the cost without paying for the name! We also offer a 100% LIFETIME GUARANTEE and FREE SHIPPING!</a></p>
<br/>
looking further... I tried another text from the page; http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&n … &meta=
Ok, so your link isn't indexed yet.
Here's the cache of the HTML version of the page;
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&n … &meta=
So things may not be all bad, except I am concerned about that JS redirect... see how it plays out. For the moment, I would keep an eye on the cache to see IF and WHEN the ol GoogleBot decides to come back. If it shows up there, or via Yahoo site xplorer, I'd imagine it would have some value
In the end I am not a huge fan of recips... researching, managing and maintaining is work that makes it less than appetizing. Remember, Google says they don't punish sites for whom links to them... but they CAN for who you link to. One needs to not only ensure the worthiness of the site they are linking out to with recips, but also take a quarterly audit of all te outbound links to ensure the pages/site hasn't changed in that time, or been up to shady tactics
That is much of what the 'TrustRank' concepts are around; Who links to whom - known by the company U keep....
Anyway, I shall put up a blog post on this methinks.... recips, done responsibly, can be a very time consuming ordeal often not worth the hassle.
