What are the first steps to becoming a designing?

If you had to start from scratch and knew very little about web design what would you do first, if you wanted to build fairly basic sites with just text, images and basic forms?

Learn:

HTML?
CSS?
PHP?
Dreamweaver or other software?

Re: What are the first steps to becoming a designing?

There is really only one answer

learn to design; whatever application you use, designing is like painting, you need to be an artist

Once you've mastered that, start with HTML

There's no point learning CSS until you know HTML; and dreamweaver teaches you nothing about design

You could start learning PHP as well, but to make php driven websites you still need to know HTML - the php would be outputting html

I know HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, and understand XML and XSLT - but can i make pretty or good looking sites? No, I make functional sites and hire a designer to make them look nice

You have to have the designer's eye to be able to make a good website.  There are generally two types of web people, developers and designers.  Few people are lucky enough to be both.

On the code side of it, start with HTML(XHTML) and CSS.  If you want to do development as well, then start to head into client-side javascript.  Once you nail one object-oriented language, the rest are pretty easy to learn.

However, I fail to see much use in client side javascript without a server side application for it to communicate with (ie an ajax based system)

I think that JavaScript is good to start because you can see the effects immediately and don't have to have access to a server.  It is a good place to start learning object-oriented programming, though it is greatly enhanced in an ajax setup.

Re: What are the first steps to becoming a designing?

Korat here are my 2c thoughts.

Learning one and then moving on to the next might not be the easiest or best way to do it. I agree with Northie that to get into designing you need to be able to create, modify and slice the images. To know how to place these images together for proper display you need to know (x)html and have basic knowledge of css.

So to learn one somewhat requires you know the other. So I would suggest you start with learning how to create, modify and slice images. Then get into learning (x)html and css simultaneously. Set aside any other languages like js, php, asp etc, etc. A good understanding of (x)html and css will make learning the other languages easier.

As far as DW goes unless you have already purchased it, I would hold off doing so.
It really doesn't matter what editor you use. Learn the code first.

Re: What are the first steps to becoming a designing?

Designing websites can be broken into two parts. 'The Art' and 'The Code'.

Making some real stunning, unique, sites will require you to be fairly handy with a higher-end art program like Photoshop or Corel Photo-Paint.

However, you can make all the pretty pictures you want, but it doesn't do you any good if you don't know HOW to properly place them on the page.

So that leaves us with html, css, java, php, etc. When talking about these codes, it's absolutely inevitable that you're going to need basic knowledge of good 'ol html anyways.

So to answer your question, I would learn the HTML. Then the CSS, then learn some good art software. After that, everything else is optional based on what type of sites you think you'll be building in the future. Static sites rarely use anything more complicated than a well thought out CSS file. While sites like SR get a bit more challenging.

offtopic

For those of you who want to create a real-world style web server without any cost then install something like xampp; it'll put apache (a webserver), MySQL (a database server and engine) and PHP on your own computer so you can look at webpages like

http://localhost/my-site1/index.php

and have it all running nicely on your own computer

experiment with dynamic content, ajax, etc etc etc

Then port it to a live server and you're done

Re: What are the first steps to becoming a designing?

I would add, that IMO the easiest way to learn html, php, and mysql is to download an open source script, and mess about with it. These free scripts usually have a template system, which will enable you to create your own website. You can use the default template as a basis for your own, and you can get help from a forum associated with the develpment project.

You will of course need editing programs such as Dreamweaver, and Fireworks - these are great tools, and make life a little easier.

Bytheway, Thanks Northie for your recommendation of Xampp - I might give that a try. I usually do my development on a test server, but local experimentation may be easier.
