text or html

We hve been having a debate about the relevancy of offering text based e mails versus html.
We currently offer both versions to our database but I feel that the text version is now out of date . In addition to our regular update newsletter we also sell slots to our advertisers and text is no good for this.
any thoughts

Re: text or html

I´ve heard that newsletters should be sent in both versions, text and html.
The main reason for this is, that if you´re only sending html newsletters, the danger, they end in a spamfolder is relative high.

Re: text or html

as ak says it is good to send both; this is done with the multi-part mime boundary thingy

However, i prefer plain text formatted markdown style

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markdown

you can actually make things look pretty nice, if you put your head to it, and by sending the text/plain haeder, most email clients will format it the way you write it........a bit like using <pre> tags in html

Re: text or html

i third that DEFINATELY send both....sending only HTML sends your spam score soaring

HTML are prettier and more pro looking but they are far harder to get delivered to inboxes with spam filters being so tight these days

It's very important that you design you HTML newsletter as best as you can with spam guidelines in mind- to do that test against spam filters

depends how you track

you can still put links in your email, and track hits to those

however, image based tracking will not work

Re: text or html

Brings up a good question..... For a while now, I've been contemplating newsletters to keep traffic coming back. The biggest issue was obviously what software to use.

However, recently we purchased another company and they were sending out monthly newsletters via www(dot)GraphicMail(dot)com.

Shortly after the purchase, I used that service to send out a message detailing the acquisition, who the parent company is, website location, etc. Here are some stats from Graphic Mail.....

Sent: 2,374
Delivered: 2,160
Opened: 769
Click: 314 (tracks any clicked-links in the message)

Any thoughts on those stats or the service in general?

Re: text or html

Stitch, every industry and system will be different so it's hard to comment

regardless...

opens look good

undeliverables look high > make sure the system is setup to remove emails that hard bounce

clicks look poor compared to opens IMO > less then half the people who are interested enough in your NL to open it are clicking through, so you may want to examine why that is

Re: text or html

The click through on that particular e'mail could be explained by the fact that some people already know who the parent company is. Also, the link in the e'mail was more of a 'reference' rather than a 'hard sell'.

On the other hand.... If a message is written as a notice, rather than trying to sell something, one could speculate that the click through rate should be almost 100%.

I think the users can opt to get a text based version of the e'mail, so I wonder if that plays a roll too......
