Ok...I'm taking 'classes' at work to learn Perl.

It's going pretty well. I'm even starting to grasp regular expressions (regex).

It not looks so hard, it look tedious.
How good are you on Perl?
There are many pattern looking, [options], \0octalvalues and so on.
For me the best option is like always: divide and conquer. Group the instructions to see what are they doing to later join them again

I was seeing the code, and see that are many repetitive items, or things that can be group by some other ways, like
\r \n \t and white space, can be represented by \s

For me, a better way is to divide the Regex in more than one line, to be easier to manipulate.
