tiny url style site suggestions

can i pick the collective wisdom of the folks here a moment please?

I'm going through a little spell of reinvestment at the moment and have just bought a small url redirection site in the same format as www.tinyurl.com

Does anyone here use a url shortening service at all?

What features would  you add to tinyurl?

I've got a designer reworking the site and a developer ready to roll with it too. I could launch the site as it is today but I want better features on the before I do.

Got a load of ideas in the pot already and wondered if you folk had similar thoughts to me about it.

Re: tiny url style site suggestions

I bought domain name "the-redirector.com" last year with the same idea in mind - apart from some black hat stuff i wanted to do with it, i was thinking about throw-away email addresses - you would get a random email address that forwarded to your main email for 30 days and then would stop working. the idea was to be able to sign up for stuff, have it delivered to your main email without the worry of being spammed to death for ever and ever.

As far as actual url redirection, i just wanted to hi-jack links (1 in every 100 requests, for example) and redirect to a semantically similar page, owned by me and full of ads.

I figured this wasn't elegant enough and haven't done it............yet

Re: tiny url style site suggestions

My plan is a little less on the dark side than that. Sub-domain access, tagging, mobile transcoding / content adaptation, API access for Twitter and FaceBook applications. You know a bit of social 2.0 juicyness....

I like the email idea, i know a company doing somethng similar with 07 style numbers and voip in the I'm, they simply charge by premium SMS. Another great idea like that is temporary fax numbers, send your email address in a text to the number and it bills you a quid and a half a month for fax to email.

Loads of twists on the temporary services idea that could turn coin.....

as for url redirection stuff i've no dark plans but if it ever got to a stupid number of click throughs on the urls each day i'd he tempted to throw a forced preview page that's ad-heavy.

Re: tiny url style site suggestions

lol, that isnt a bad idea at all... wait till your site is regarded as clean and authoritative, wait for the clicks and then spam the poor buggers till their escape key starts to bleed. Awesome.

Ye know, expanding on the email idea, why not run it as promotional email addresses utelising tiny url? eg. instead of setting up an email account for win@site-reference.com you could use that email and redirect to a real one, after the promotion kill it. Not only is it a great way to see how many people are responding to a promotion but you can whack em with a monthly subscription to use the service... companies love stuff like that, guaranteed easy cash.

You could also market tiny url to mobile sites, why type http://mobi.site-refence.com when ye could judt type www.sr.com... also subscription based... just another angle tongue

Re: tiny url style site suggestions

I like the idea, Nic, of being able to choose the link paramers and folder names

imagine you have this by default

turning it into

would be cool

You'll obviously want the info to be unique but it could be a cross between tagging like del.icio.us and tinyurl

Re: tiny url style site suggestions

exactly Norhtie! tummenupp

might be pushing it but instead of this

could it be something like this:

suggesting that because people (or maybe just me lol)  often focus on the first part of the url

Re: tiny url style site suggestions

Well, I guess theoretically, Nic, that it could be whatever you wanted. It's just a redirect anyhow, whether it be a 301 or a 302, I'm not sure which is used.

You should be able to make it anything you want (i.e. [http://mark.tinyurl.com/mark/1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/?links=1] should work the same as [http://mark.tinyurl.com?links=1] or whatever the decision-maker decides the format is, so long as the redirect is set up correctly.

A few scripts, either PHP or Perl or whatever is preferred, should enable the site to set up whatever they want and have it redirect to wherever they want. Again, a few options there also, whether they do the redirects via .htaccess or with PHP and a MySQL database.

Guess it just all depends on what the service wants to offer.

Re: tiny url style site suggestions

Sweet, sweet and sweet, thanks for the ideas folks! It's why I love to have the odd brainstorm over here more than any other forum!

http://wholeurl.com That's the site I bought and this is more how it's going to look when it's done: http://mobtex.net/uploads/565009.jpg - still a long way to go with it yet but it should be pretty functional and pretty funky too I hope.

For me this thing needs to be really user friendly on a mobile phone so if you set up a tag all you need to do on your mobile is save wholeurl.mobi then enter the tag on the form and it will show you a mobile friendly version of the url.

Tags are going to be core and I want to add an element for private tagging you can have the tag SR and the private key 123 so then only you (or someone who's life is boring and time rich) would be able to access the link behind it.

If you look at the preview, there's a 'not safe for work' tick box which I thought was a good idea, this will first click through to an ad-rich forced preview page but only when the URL is NSWF. It should, out of respect for the clicker, warn them if it's not the kind of thing you want on your work Internet access log or the boss seeing you browsing in work time. It relies on people checking the box for NSWF but it's a nice 'safe' idea in theory.

So we want:

tag.wholeurl.com
wholeurl.com/tag
secret.tag.wholeurl.com
wholeurl.com/secret.tag

Plus a mobile web form where you can enter the tag or the secret and the tag

No query strings needed as wildcarded sub-domains and htaccess can do the grunt-work. Also ? can be a bitch to find on a mobile so I'm going for as easy to type as possible.

Bookmarkets? That's easy to sort. Drag and drop javascript element. blinka

The killer thing to go with it would be a FireFox plugin where you can right click a page or a link and have a 'Submit to WholeURL' option - anyone got any suggestions on who can do that for me? Anyone commissioned a simple FireFox extension before - and no I don't want to learn another language and add another skill and job to my list before someone suggests I dev it myself......

Re: tiny url style site suggestions

I use  tinyurl maybe 10 time per week, mainly for urls in emails.

Looking at your version, I will get fed up pretty quick with putting my own tags - how long till we have to try 10, 20, 100 because they are all taken. Maybe have an option for 'gibve me one' will work best.

Looking at your uses and suggestions, it may not be long before people start having short urls almost as long as the long ones.....

Be interested to see your plans for ROI blinka

Re: tiny url style site suggestions

Tags are a good idea, but I like matte's suggestion for a "Give Me One", or suggest some that are available if the one the user enters is already taken.

Maybe even something like:

tag.username.wholeurl.com
tag.username.wholeurl.com/secret
wholeurl.com/tag/
wholeurl.com/tag/secret
tag.wholeurl.com/secret

I dont know, something like that...I know the / can be hard to find on a mobile device.

what about:

tag.wholeurl.com and
secret.tag.wholeurl.com

There's alot of ways you could do it. I guess whatever makes sense.

Keep us updated once your site's up and running!

Re: tiny url style site suggestions

Thing is, you're not limited to doin it one way or another

You could have a tinyurl style setup as well as tags, but then why would someone choose you over tinyurl?

If people have an account, with a username then the duplicate tags thing becomes less of an issue, if it takes the form http : / / username.domain.com/tag/

You could also offer an API, for people like matte.

giving you at least three possible options of accessing your service

Re: tiny url style site suggestions

Mob,
Back to original question (from the nontechy POV, as usual). Yeah, I have a shortened version of my you've-got-to-be-kidding elongated freebie original site down to at-least-I-can-remember-it-now size! Got it thru another freebie site -- Bravenet (so you can check out what they offer to compare. Yes, it is a dotcommer)

Your site might trump what I have, 'cept, not sure 'bout all the numbers stuff. Do you plan just to use numbers only? If it takes off, that can ended up being almost as long as the you've-got-to-be-kidding size, or folks having to remember digits that make Social Security numbers seem easy to memorize. Have you considered KWs instead of numbers? I'd rather have tinyurl.teddies, then tinyurl.12745894547505, which means nothing to anyone.

BTW -- cool idea, and...also love the idea of temp e-mail addys! Sure beats sending everything to dietdecafcola thru Yahoo! -- my junk e-mail addy that I never check. lol
