Plurals v singular?
I know this is an old question but was wondering if things have changed. When targeting a phrase such as “footballer”, should I target the plural “footballers” or do all search engines automatically rank the phrase for both singular and plural on my page?

Re: Plurals v singular?
My understanding is they treat each equally - ie no penalty for footballer/s

Re: Plurals v singular?
I tend to go for plurals where i can as you get both words for the price of one.
but, as matte said, the SEs treat them no different

Re: Plurals v singular?
I sort of side Northie. But based on my own testing, with targeting being equal, plural terms seem to perform better over all, but singular long tail terms convert a wee bit better.
Hawaiian fabric - Low 2-yard minimum
Plus size Hawaiian shirts - Womens
Car shirts - Matched shirt pockets
Hawaiian dresses - Made in Hawaii

Re: Plurals v singular?
But if you expect to get sticky SERPS you also have to target punctuated terms
Hawaiian fabric - Low 2-yard minimum
Plus size Hawaiian shirts - Womens
Car shirts - Matched shirt pockets
Hawaiian dresses - Made in Hawaii

Actually folks there IS A DIFFERENCE.... let's look at ebooks
Free eBook

Free eBooks
http://www.google.ca/search?source=ig&a … &meta=
Now I can also tell you (since I have access to one of the top sites there) that the traffic is greatly different as well. There is more than 100% difference in the traffic on those terms as well.
So, considering plurals is actually something to look at when researching terms, targeting for the SEO program.

Re: Plurals v singular?
Thanks guys, we have decided to put plurals in where we can, as long as it seems natural in th text. Then in alt tags etc where we can't squueze them in anywhere else without sounding odd.
