Re: Please Review - http://validwebdesigns.com

Hey, ColoEagle!  You've done well, Mate!

I've had only a superficial look at your site but I reckon it's a ripper.

I did find the name a little confusing. I thought you must be throwing down the tools and becoming yet another web developer. But no! You've created a reference site for web developers. I wonder how you're planning on promoting it.

I really like the look and feel of the site. The colours are great. The red and black header contrasts dramatically with the soft pastel background of the main content, and the white of the nav gives just about right balance. Your use of red is cleverly unique. Red works for you well, here, where it usually grates and causes a cheap look as in a get rich quick or eBay site.

The curves of the ellipses, with their random supplementary curves, give the site a kinetic energy lacking in many sites.

The subtlety of the less than and greater than characters in the header impose the theme of the site onto the mind in an almost subliminal manner.

Of course, I've had private access to the colour selection chart for several months. I've used it often and found it both useful and convenient.

I also had a look at the special characters. More there than in my html editor. Should be handy for web builders.

I've got the site bookmarked and will use it regularly as a resource. It's a site that will be useful to refer people to on the forum.

Oh! There's one more feature you should add. You need some Google ads. Nah! Just kidding.

Great site! Best wishes with it!

Regards,
Laurie.

Re: Please Review - http://validwebdesigns.com

Looks good, and it's no big surprise that I couldn't find any code errors glad

You may want to put the color chart on a new window.  Each click on a color or an arrow adds to the browsing history.  If someone plays around with the arrows too much, they may not be able to get back to your site (happened to me).

I did find some spelling errors while browsing around, but I don't know whether to address it to you or Laurie as they're on the Optimizing Images page.

There's text showing up in the top left corner "ARENA OF DESIGN" that looks out of place.  Is that meant to be there?

Yes, there are a few spelling mistakes. Been in trouble over my spelling since I started school.

I'll take it on board for the version on my site. Thanks.

Of course, we'd all agree that it's a great little tutorial.

Laurie.

Thank you Steven,

Sheeesh, I thought I checked all the pages, spelling corrected. Thanks for pointing it out.

I had considered, and to a point still, having the color chart open in a new window because of what you mentioned. Of course in XHTML1.0 strict the "target" doesn't validate. May have to cheat and do that one with the use of jS.

The  "Arena of  Design" is part of the background image as is the "Build it Better" at the top right of the main content.

Yeah, that's the only reason I haven't switched to strict.  I'd rather stick with transitional than have to apply a hack to get the same effect.

Ah, Seven! Yes, I appreciate her work.

Seven may think I ignore her. I've only ever once responded to one of her posts.

But far from it. I appreciate her unique ways of thinking. She is different from the average web builder. Arty type, ya know! blinka Arty types are different, creative, even unsettling. I've enjoyed browsing her websites.

Not surprised to see it's Seven's artwork.

Laurie.

Re: Please Review - http://validwebdesigns.com

The code is a wreck! I can't believe you actually HELP people! hahhaha j/k tongue

The design is... well.... risky. And by that, I'm going on my gut instincts when I first viewed it. As soon as the page loaded, I thought to myself "MySpace Layout", and god knows how 'wonderful' those are.

But it was saved when I scrolled down the page, and realized that the background didn't scroll with it. The use of red is also border line.... maybe it's the actual image. I had to look at it a few times to realize what was wrong - The image, including the red, tells me 'New', in a good sense. You know, stepping into uncharted territory, so theoretically it CAN and probably WILL work.

But there is one point of contrast that's screaming 1999 - The nav buttons. Don't get me wrong tho... I'm certain the user with make the clicks cause they certainly stick out at ya, and if thats what you're going for, then you got yourself a winner. Since you guys (and Seven) are the design/content pro's, then I'll just leave it up to you to deliberate.

The 'color' page - Tank it. I'm sorry, but this page has got to go, be changed... something. I would encorporate your existing background/theme, and use an i-frame that can be invisible. That way the user knows they're at the same site, and you get all the regular site links. And yes, the back button needs to be fixed.... but research is needed and here's my thoughts....

Right now clicking 'back' just reloads a previous color setting. When I click back, I want to go to a previous page, not monkey with colors. So from my perspective, it's annoying.

However, maybe a user that has plenty of time on there hands would really like to sift through all the colors. Maybe other people can remember that ONE color 5 steps ago..... just not me. Terrible memory, and I'm impatient.

Side thought - Make a back button for each individual item color? This would allow the stepping back thing for colors, and the regular browser back button could be used like it's suppose to. You would have all your bases covered then, but could be code-complicated.

Other than that, I could nit-pick a few other things, but those are pretty small/minor.

Whats with not having a meta description tag? Is there something people aren't telling me about this?

Awesome tutorials! Nicely done tummenupp

Question though...what is the point of this site?

We all know you love helping others which is awesome and that’s what this site provides

But what self-serving purposes are behind it? Are you trying to monetize it? Use it to get leads, feed to other sites?

Re: Please Review - http://validwebdesigns.com

Thanks for the input guys big_smile

I've changed the color chart page to include the top banner and navigation and placed it inside an object tag. Takes care of the back button problem in IE and Opera but not FF butter haven't tested it in any other browsers.

Stitch wrote:

That is top secret and you know what would happen if I were to tell you. lol The meta tag thing is scheduled, haven't had a chance to get into too much of the SEO thing with the pages yet.

LOL, I actually wanted something that was a little on the uncharted side. Felt this would go with the idea behind the site regarding the use of style sheets for design and layout.

Thank you,
Haven't given in depth thought to the monetizing issue yet, have a couple thoughts but nothing set.

With those that I've helped they all commented that I should do something like this, soooo, in addition it also gives me a place where I can do my own thing and have it available without the need to use my other site/s.

Thank you,

Updating it for a while won't be a problem. Currently has 57 pages and I have a list currently at 107 for additional pages.  Seems my add list is growing faster than I can get them written. lol

Looks like I'm in for a rewrite update to the color chart page. ah well always something more to learn.

So Jody...you just did it to help people? You're too nice big_smile

If it's just to help...you could even put a PayPal "donate" button on there that people could pitch in a few bucks here and there to keep the site going if they found it useful

Than you Laurie and Jody.
I really appreciate a site like this and I think the point of this site is to help people like me.  I know what has to be done but at times can't remember what.  With bookmarking this site I get instant help sort of.

My daughter's high school is starting what they call career classes.  Strictly voluntary for both students and teachers.
The first class they are working on putting together is "Web Design"
I think a site like this will be beneficial to our endeavors.  Again Thank you.

Ah yes, Ninak! It would be great for this site to be a recourse for a whole class of students. Jody is that sort of person who gets great pleasure from helping others and seeing others succeed.

I guess it's possible that the site could attract backlinks from a lot of .edu sites.

Regards,
Laurie.

Excellent!

That's lovely and quick, I can see extensions on the tutorials in the future like rounded css borders and corners on the forms to make them even sexier, it's fast and informative with an awesome array of in depth content.

The only thing missing is evident monetization and it's call to action.

glad

Re: Please Review - http://validwebdesigns.com

WOWZA.... sheesh, the stuff that goes on around here after i disappear for a while tongue

Great site CE, i always wanted to meet one of the guys who make these tutorial sites big_smile nice. Some very cool stuff on there, especially the special characters... they are always good to have on hand.

The colors look, cool. I dont mean that in the artsy fartsy "Deep ocean breeze cool" i mean cool as in "dude... thats pretty cool". It grabbed my attention and held it long enough to get confused... then keep on trying and get a lil more confused tongue

Which brings me to two things 1- On the beauty of css page, the "view designs" thingy doesnt work... 2 - the reason for my confusion was that i looked at your site, thought cool, skimmed through and got stuck, when i clicked on the top links i didnt see the menu on the side change, i read the text under how to use the tutorials (thought that the pages were still in development), then came here and noticed all the comments about the tutorials... got even more confused, checked i was on the right site... scratched deeper (clicked more sporadically) and found myself on the tutorials. Perhaps some sort of definitive change would make the menu transition easier? a header on the menu perhaps?

Other than that... wow mate, brilliant... if i had a hat i would take it off to you and then shave my head (further) just to make the point. Its nice to see a truly helpful site spring up without a price tag strapped to the umbilical cord tummenupp
