PDF Files
G'day.
Mr Stitch has a post concerning PDF files which triggers this long standing question.
What is the advantage in using PDF files over static or dynamic pages?
From a site visitor's viewpoint, I hate PDF files.
Thanks,
Laurie.

Re: PDF Files
Thats a great question, and one that can't be answered easily.
In our particular case, we offer thousands upon thousands of products. Combine that with the fact that no one here (obviously) can code for something like that, AND the boss isn't willing to dish out the money to have it done.
Thus the 'quick and dirty' approach has been taken. When the catalog is printed, we ask the printing company to export the catalog into blocks. Then simply make a catalog page with a bunch of links to the appropriate PDF files, blah blah blah blah... you get the idea.
I suppose if I sat down with it for long enough (year or so), maybe I could learn how to do the whole dynamic thing.
But to answer your question... "quick 'n dirty".
Besides, in our particular business, most people are going to request the printed copy anyways, so theirs no real loss.

Re: PDF Files
Aloha Laurie,
PDF’s are not for everyone, but they do have some good attributes. A PDF is indexed just like a web page and with minimal effort they are fairly easy to rank. Plus they pass link love. In addition to having SEO merit, a PDF format can be a indispensable tool for delivering items such as order forms, micro catalogues, brochures, etc.
While I wouldn’t necessarily make them the primary format for getting the message across to the visitor, I certainly would not hesitate to offer PDF formats for select content/applications.

Re: PDF Files
Thanks Fellas.
Looks like this is not the time for me to learn this new trick.

Laurie.

I´m with Laurie. Pdf-files usually suck. (normaly, when I click on a link and a pdf-file opens, I have to update my reader before it opens), but like waveshoppe said I´m not everyone and for this reason, why not? Offer a pdf-transformation button and everybody is happy.

Re: PDF Files
if anyone's interested, I've found a fast alternative to Adobe Acrobat reader from foxitsoftware. Just put on the normal prefix and suffix for the web address.

Re: PDF Files
well like Northie said they do have good uses
for example in books, or reports, guides, etc
i spend a a decent time on the road and usually take those opportunities to catch up on my reading- but internet connections are not always available so for this PDF's are perfect for me
for example i would download Gypsy's Personalized Search Guide up top, save it to my comp in its pdf format and this would allow me to read it on the go without having to be online

Re: PDF Files
So, can I easily produce a PDF file straight from an Exell spreadsheet? That would be an easier way to produce a table of sporting results or some such.
Thanks,
Laurie.
