Viable Cometitor for Google
Hey! Get a load of this! http://au.news.yahoo.com/080201/19/15pkl.html
Kinda suggests that Live isn't regarded as a force by it's owners.
But a rival for Google! Maybe The Ultimate Guide to Personal Search won't be so important, after all.
Regards,
Laurie.

Re: Viable Cometitor for Google
Seems to be some doubt about whether, between them, they have somebody with what it would take to run the business.
Ah! An opening for the Gypsy.

I did, Mate. When I removed the extra "m" I thought I had it. Ah well!
Not the first time, of course.
At least we all know you're on the job and on the ball, Stitch.

... last I checked, Yah and MSN only make up around 25% of all searches with G sitting around 50-60%. This is ore about the OTHER areas.... YaH has some popular social spaces as well as eMail and IM market shares that are likely more important to MS.....

Re: Viable Cometitor for Google
Actually, if you step back and look at the 'whole' picture, I really don't see G owning that much of the search arena. Let's face it.... most of the people, right now anyways, using G are webmasters and geeks...... a lot of which don't have any REAL money.
The shoppers with the bank-rolls are the soccer moms, the successful local business men, community leaders, etc. Those are the people that have an actual financial influence on the web as a whole, but they just aren't online nearly as much.
Slowly tho, they are coming in more and more, and what do they use? MSN, hands down. It's right there, neatly tucked into IE. They don't know anything about SE's, algo's, who has the best results, etc, because they simply don't give a rats a$$...... they just take what's fed to 'em.

Re: Viable Cometitor for Google
If I were Microsoft, I would think about it twice, cause if microsoft is not even able to offer a compatible, robust web-browser, they maybe peek in the wrong direction (at least they fight themself
). No reason for Google to worry about, but for Yahoo, I would say.

Sorry Stitch, gotta disagree with you there. Looking at my traffic sources, I'm getting 4-6 times as many visitors from Google than Yahoo, and at least 11 times as many as from MSN (6 times if I include Live.com), all with the same bounce rates. I think Google has become a common enough search site that people are typing it in (or more likely setting a link to it) instead of clicking IE's search function.

Re: Viable Cometitor for Google
Yeah, unfortunately the catch phrase "just google it" has spread like wildfire because of sitcoms and movies - therefore the soccer moms and what not who watch... lets say "desperate housewives" would have seen them google some characters name thus embedding google in their minds when they want to find something online. I have my doubts that "lets live it" or "lets yahoo it" are gonna pic up any time soon

But do you know what 'type' of people they are? There's a HUGE income gap between college students looking for a camera and a suburbian mom just looking to take some snap shots.
Those suburbanites are the real money holders, and I'm willing to bet they open IE just because it came with the computer, and IE automatically gives them MSN.... and they stick with it.

Re: Viable Cometitor for Google
That wasn't the camera site, I used the numbers from the bino site since they were far more conservative. The point is: in the big picture, more potential customers are using Google to find us than Yahoo and MSN/Live combined, and even Yahoo is beating MSN/Live.
Microsoft isn't trying to buy Yahoo because their search engine is doing better than Yahoo's is, they're trying to buy out a competitor who is weak enough that they can buy them out. Then they hope to tag-team Google out of the lead. I doubt they'll even change the name for a while just to keep up the appearance of competition.

Re: Viable Cometitor for Google
Then there must be something else going on, cause I just don't see it. Don't care who ya are - Go to any random soccer mom or granny house, and I'm willing to bet that MSN is the home page.
We have to remember, Google is EXTREMELY good at sending traffic to the right places, for oddball search terms. So if MSN/Yahoo do a terrible job of handling those off-the-wall search terms, then it's not that the users aren't physically there... it's because your site isn't ranking for all the weird stuff people key in, which again... isn't your fault per say.
At least, thats the theory.
