Blogs, Social Networking and Search

Blog, Weblog, Online Journal: all the same thing.

Well, G'day. There's something here that's been niggling at me for a while. A bit nebulous, but I've tried to put a finger on it. I'd be pleased to see some further comment.

1)  A blog as we think of it, generally has many of the typically charistics:
*  Daily or weekly entries.
*  Produced in a CMS blogging platform.
*  In the sidebar - Latest Posts, Archives, Blogroll, About, Categories,  Wigets for latest visitors.
*  RSS Feed.
*  Photo or U-Tube video with the post.
*  Linked icons to social networks and social bookmarking sites.

2)  Content:
*  There's a lot of stolen content in blogs that appear on the social networks. Stolen content is duplicate content.
*  There's also a lot of RSS content on these blogs, which is duplicate content.
*  A lot of original writing is unimportant to the wider population, which is OK since it's an account of a person's life experiences and reactions.
*  Much of the content isn't optimized for anything, much less keywords/phrases that people are searching on.

3)  Search relevency:
*  When I do a search in Google, I seldom come up with a blog. Or at least I seldom come up with a site that looks like a typical blog.
*  Static websites, dynamic websites and blogs that are treated as websites, seem to rank in the SERPs well above typical blogs.

4)  Conclusion:
*  From the SEO and social media marketing viewpoints, there's a bit more to blogging than simply writing a personal or commercial, online journal.
*  The blog that ranks up there with conventional websites, is a different kind of site to our picture of a conventional blog or online journal.
*  There's little point in rubbing shoulders with the typical blogger from a SEO or social media marketing viewpoint, in most cases.

I know that this goes against some of what WS has found to be the case. But then WS is a special kind of a person, huh?

Regards,
Laurie.

Re: Blogs, Social Networking and Search

Blogs rank because they have links

They get links by way of comments, trackbacks and other bloggers

They get a lot of links if the content is good

When I search within my industry (web development), i get a lot of blogs; as people may have written a blog post about how to programme something that is useful / clever etc. A lot of people will then link to this; comment on it etc etc; If I write about it in my blog then there is then a track back (reciprocal link)

Blogging produces a very natural link pattern - the type of pattern that was first assumed to dominate on the web when goog was born and PR invented.

general day-to-day searches rarely return a blog; unless it's wikipedia; the ultimate info blog

How many times have any of the following sites come back i the top ten for one of your search terms over then last week?

YouTube
MySpace
del.icio.us
wikipedia

My answers:

Spoiler:

YouTube: 1-5
MySpace: 0
del.icio.us: 0
wikipedia:20-50

Thanks Northie.

I take your point about the sector in which I'm searching.

Re: Blogs, Social Networking and Search

Most of this comes down to (as Chris touched on) the market - some markets have a larger Blogger base and is suited to that. There is no broad sweeping blanket coverage as far a tactics go with Social Media Marketing. I find Blogs that come up in SERPs in a few markets I deal in...it's situational.

He is also bang on as far as the ability to really fill out an ogranic link profile... my Blog isthe king of the long tail (lol)...

Once more, Social Meda Markeing is more about brand than it is about SEO or even direct conversions; All that glitters is not Gold.

So, it is much like owning the market for your key target terms and long tail.. U want to own them all. Social Media is merely another avenue to make your presence felt. If prospective consumers see you all over th SERPs, the PPC and the Social Media world, they will percieve your brand to be stronger. The SEO benefits are somewhat secondary, it is more about brand developent and management.
