Re: Favorite Graphics tool

Hello, I read this site mainly but after going over these comments decided to ask a question.  I am stumbling through CS2 and would like to know if anyone has come across a quality instructional program.  My design time is limited due to life getting in the way.
Second I have tried to understand the differences between Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks and Imageready seems like alot of redundancy to me.  Some clarifications would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time in replying.

Re: Favorite Graphics tool

I use banner maker pro fro my image editting...
it is basically for designing standard ads, but works great for any kind of image editting. It works only for making 600*800 image at max... so not as great as any big time application. but surely is a handy tool for making small banners ,images and some effects.
All the images on my site are made using banner maker pro, if u wish to have a demo of how it works... the animations are done using it too... cumbersome but okzz.

Re: Favorite Graphics tool

I run Linux and that shapes my options somewhat.  My primary image editor is GIMP.  I've found Lives useful and approachable as my video editor.  Lives can save as animated GIF and I do further refinement with GIMP.  http://birdnestthemovie.com has a video I created in this fashion.  My starting point was single JPEG.

You can say that again, MrStitch. I therefore use GIMP, Paint.NET and FastStone. Don't need a whole lot of graphics work done. Mostly banners, logos, some misc adjustment works and sometimes adding text to a graphic. To spend the money on something like PhotoShop would just be going overboard for me. Thanks to the great free stuff I get my graphics work done and am able to invest that money in other stuff I constantly seem to need or want.

Re: Favorite Graphics tool

For a long long time I used (don't laugh) Picture it.  Recolored pixel by pixel.  Now I got this thingy called PHOtOShop cs3 extended and the only thing that I have figured out how to do on it is erase and lasso.  Still plugging away at it.

Re: Favorite Graphics tool

Photoshop Elements 3.0 for photo enhancing.
I don't really see any reason (apart from curves
if this is the correct term)  to upgrade it into
it's more expensive versions, this one came with
my current desktop. Being able to drag on the curves
would give me better control over exact colors but I
find using levels to be more than adequate for my needs.

I'm learning Fireworks for more advanced vector graphics,
buttons etc. A fun program to play around with.

Smartdraw 7 for the location maps and flags on my travel sites.
Smartdraw has lots and lots of free (well not free but
included anyway) libraries of "vector clipart".
Vector in this case means they can be easily adjusted
in size and still remain totally smooth.

Re: Favorite Graphics tool

I am currently using Paintshop Pro - Version 8.   Seems to do what it says on the tin...although i find it hogs the memory of my pc a fair bit. Tried using photoshop elements a while ago but just could not seem to get the hang of it.........disappointed with the image export results on psp 8 though, find the options limited over file size/quality quality.juggle

Re: Favorite Graphics tool

Im personally a big fan of mspaint, it has some very fancy cropping techniques - you can cut off anything below the top left corner of an image, really great effects - cleverly disguised as color modes (8bit is my favorite when im feeling retro) and lastly the pixel by pixel image manipulation is really functional when going mono tongue

My second best still remains CorelDraw /Paint 12  with  CS2 coming a close 3rd.

I use PhotoShop CS3 but personally I feel I could still get the same thing done on Photoshop 4.  I could still be using CorelDraw 8, instead of 13 as well ... they keep changing minor things and then bring out a whole new version for us to waste money on.

Re: Favorite Graphics tool

What really bugs me in imaging software is there will be a feature I REALLY want to play with -- but I either have to get a different program, an upgrade to my current software, buy a manual to find out where the feature is hidden in my software, and sometimes when I finally get the right program, with the right tool - it is dissapointing.

Actually, there are things under the hood that sometimes get tweaked. Like the algo (i really don't know what to call it), thats used to grab a series or section of color.... you know..... when you want to drop out the background, and you set your tolerance level....... yeah.. that thing.

Also, when making text logo's, Corel seems to make a much more professional 'smooth' look. However, I attribute this to a better algo for stretching and skewing text, VS. my 10 year old busted copy of Photoshop....... which is more than likely much better at it by now.
