By far the worst: Fasthost, recently was hacked, and forced all of its users a change a passwords for everything (mysql, ftp logging on to their site ..etc), and still even now suffers with slow MySQL connections
I also had terrible experiences with fasthosts. Not only was the service bad but 6 months after I left them they charged me for an another year's hosting and point blank refused to refund the money.
I'm with hostgator now and so far the service has been very good.

Heard Abyss server is good. It's FREE and it runs from your PC. Can't say anymore about servers than that because I am totally ignorant about them.

Umm if it runs from your own PC then why would they charge you and if they did, why would you pay?

The server is free, matte
There are some others as well. I happen to know because I am doing research for a new web site.

PS:
Of course, the drawback is...
If you have a power failure, your site is down. You'd have to have your PC running constantly, preferably with a broadband connection. But... it's free. It's yours. And if there is a problem... it's yours as well, lol.

Get a colocation. I would suggest BlueSquare as you are in the UK. They are good.

I can understand exactly how you feel. Since 1994 I have had so many bad experiences with hosting companies I have come close to giving up a few times. Three times I had excellent hosts who where taken over my other companies then the dream turned into a nightmare. I have moved to hosts who looked good but turned out to be hopeless.
I am based in Hong Kong and the Philippines and always use US based hosts (the local hosts are incredibly backward and primitive) but never really saw the need for the host to be in the same country.
I looked at Rackspace but found them way too expensive for me. I recently moved about half my sites the Hostgator who so far have proved to be very good.

I have all my sites hosted with http://www.xcalibre.co.uk/ Ihave been impressed with customer service and they also offer colocation and i quote " XCalibre can assist you as much or as little with your colocation as you want. Our managed services for colocation ensure a truly individual colocation service is provided."
Not sure of cost but might be worth getting a quote
good luck

I've been through a lot of Web hosts 95 percent of them are only interested in your monthly fee.
Most of them don't even have a decent support system. But there are a few out there that will work with you.
One of them is called Site build it. I started with them about a year ago and if it hadn't been for them I don't think my site would be as successful as it is now. They furnished the keywords they submit my pages to all major search engines. Google Yahoo MSN Ask and Alexia.
They use a step by step systems to build your pages. They furnish you with every tool you can possibly use.
You don't have to know HTML bud you can use if you want. It took me 4 years to find the Web host that did everything they said they would do.
Their support his great. and it even have a thirty-day money back guarantee.
but what really amazing about their guarantee is if you decide you don't like it after 90 days they'll still give your money back just prorate the 90 days which is still The best guarantee I've ever seen.
You should take a look at them here's the web site http://buildit.sitesell.com/Don61.html
click on the video it's well worth watching.
It cost me less then a dollar a day to run my site.
sorry but go daddy is not what i call a reliable web host.

I've been with the same host for 5 years - no trouble, instant online support if I ever get stuck, very favourable prices. On other hosts I had problems like those mentioned , but not with this one. So there are good hosts out there

Im gonna go with my usual Godaddy support group, do they have dedicated servers? yes. Are they cheap? yes. Is their support decent.... yes, do they offer everything you could possibly want your host to have... yes.
As far as my experience with them goes, i can safely say that even the cheapest hosting option is as reliable as can be, the support is brilliant - i had a lot of questions and they came back fairly quickly with real life answers and not just a "Have you tried going through the support section of our website" bull crap answer. But loads of space for cheap, unlimited sub domains and an average of 25 databases +. www.godaddy.com
- The nice thing is that godaddy is a huge company and can therefor *afford* to hire good staff to maintain their servers at little cost to us. Thousands of people paying $2.99 each makes for a bigger cash flow compared to other companies with a few hundred clients pulling in $39.99 each.
Plus.. Godaddy has them godaddy girls. I think my point is made.
My up and coming... soon to be real website... www.thewebguy.co.za (one day i will finish it
