I have had enough of web hosts
I need an alternative to web hosts
I am currently with 3 web host, over the last 6 months, I have had several problems with all of them
EuroFastHost (has been the best out of the 3), but sometimes has slow connection to the Mysql database
Omnis, was having slow MySQL request, and then, without warning, cut off all external access to their MySQL databases (making my site not work as it should). And still it suffers with slow MySQL
By far the worst: Fasthost, recently was hacked, and forced all of its users a change a passwords for everything (mysql, ftp logging on to their site ..etc), and still even now suffers with slow MySQL connections
CAN ANYONE SUGGEST AN ALTERNATEIVE
I have experience with hosting myself (apache), but cant keep the computer on 24hrs a day, and maintain it. I think what I need is called Rack Space, but I’m not sure???
I am willing to buy a server (but not really willing to spend more than £2K), but I need a place where I can keep my server, and hopefully have it manned (switched on when it goes off)
Does such a thing exist, has anyone experience in this, can anyone suggest alternatives!!!

Re: I have had enough of web hosts
its not so much hosting, as a place to put my server (which I will buy), does such a thing exist???
Eg, I would have my own server, manage it remotely, but pay rent for space in a cold room with fast internet access, and for someone to turn on my computer when it turns off, etc
does this sort of thing exist anywhere, if so, whats the name for it (is it rack space)

Re: I have had enough of web hosts
You want to look at dedicated or co-located servers .... (co-located in your case). Try researching along those lines and look for some comparison charts in the uk

Re: I have had enough of web hosts
you can rent a server and get it monitored
or you can buy your own and get that monitored to
edit. addon: most rental places like Rack Space (i belive) or The Planet offer maintenance/monitoring along with server rentals/purchases or you can get one from them and ask a 3rd party like PlatinumServerManagement to look after it for you

Or perhaps, Mr Tuition, what you need is simply a more reliable version of what you have.

Re: I have had enough of web hosts
geez, rackspace will cost me about $380 a month for a dedicated server rental (and thats lower end)
I was hoping to spend a couple of k on a server and no more than £30 a month for some one just to push the on button when it turns off. My search continues, I cant find a good comparison site in the UK for co-located...
I really have had enough of hosts though.
In an Email, Omnis just told me 'There is no "legal contract"' even after paying for a year in advance, they think they can just mess around, thats so frustrating, and Im sure its against consumer rights.
I just found a good list of co-locators: vix.com/personalcolo/

Re: I have had enough of web hosts
Renting a server for whatever $/month is the best way to go - the hardware and software is not yours; so you're not responsible for keeping it up to date and in working order; the hosting company is
Rackspace is pretty good - have used them a number of times and currently have 3 servers with them
EV1 / the Planet aren't bad
MediaTemple has some decent entry level packages

wow thats steep...u positive about that? I think if you look around to places like rackspace or the planet you should get some sufficient for around $150 - they often have sales and such and i'm sure they take some level of bargaining
as Northie said they are both good...my only issue with the Planet is their support can be a bit of a rollercoaster in my experience...sometimes very nice, sometimes downright rude and lazy. If i was to get a new one i would could RackSpace myself (if i could get the same deal at both places)
Then if you want you can get a place like PlatinumServerManagement to monitor it for you (and turn the switch back on
) for about $20-30/month
so at the end of the day you're looking at roughly $170-200/month for a decent solution

Re: I have had enough of web hosts
Yeah, rackspace are not cheap
£2000 / month for 3 servers
that's UK£ not US$ - go figure
But, you get what you pay for - an excellent service and almost top-class support (their departments tend not to talk to each other and if you want to be clever, it puts their backs up a little bit)

Re: I have had enough of web hosts
that is costly- but like Northie said you get what you pay for- maybe something to try is to get a deal through a competitor and then bring it to them to see if they can match it...may be worth a shot
on another note i have heard nothing but great stuff about Amazon S3 which i see is now available in Europe
that and their EC2 may be worth looking into: Amazon S3

I wouldn't touch their hosting packages with a barge pole.
They're a rip-off for a start
If you want to register a .co.uk domain then they're great; but a slow site at times. We're even considering moving the DNS records for our 500 sites away from 123-reg and onto rackspace

Re: I have had enough of web hosts
This might be a stupid question, but since you've had 3 hosts who all of a sudden had "slow mysql access" are you sure your queries are as optimized as they can be? I made a few pretty subtle changes to a few queries and a few days later whist complaining about my crappy webhost (which was crappy, it was down ALL THE TIME) I got some time to optimize my page and realized those changes I made made a couple queries take 2-5 seconds (and if I hit it at the right time 20+!!!) instead of .002. I cursory glance at the query revealed my moronicy and a solution to accomplish what I originally wanted and take it back down to ~.002 seconds.
Shared hosts do suck, but if everyone you've tried all of a sudden has "slow" mysql maybe it's your problem.
Just don't go to mediacatch.

Re: I have had enough of web hosts
I host my sites with http://www.hostmonster.com and love it. I think they have dedicated servers too. Fast speeds and no problems, limitless domain name add ons and MySQL databases. They are also very inexpensive.
I also work with two web servers at work. I love servers but it's really nerve wracking when one of them pukes. They are also Microsoft server 2003 / IIS and we can't get them to do SMTP right for nothing. I wish we could just move to having a host do all the maintenance for our web server -- then we could at the very least yell at them when they don't have it configured correctly and we won't be fighting internal firewall issues for over a year.
Servers end up to be far more work then a lot of people anticipate - either that or our servers just suck - that is a likely possibility....
