Thanks to sitereference....
My site has done very well over the past year. (http://www.sustainablebuildingsolutions.co.uk)
I posted up a 'site review' a loooong time ago, got some feedback, had a few more questions and again had some great help form forumites here.
I do read the newsletter (see, it does work! lol) and pop back now and again to read topics and remind me of what I should be doing.
The result of all this and some work is that my site is No1. on Google and MSN for most of our key search terms, and we only have one product that is not top 10. Compared to competitors, our ranking and hits seem to be very good, and we are up against people with much older sites with 10x the number of good incoming links.....
And now we have just been bought out, and I have a new site to build for my new owner / employer - and since I was starting from basics, I popped back here to refresh my knowledge!
So, 'old' site to be replaced (don't get me started!) http://www.natural-building.co.uk
Proposed new site from a template - http://www.natural-building.co.uk/newsite.htm - hopefully a great starting place to build on for a good looking site, with good content, that is easier to seo.
First change is to stop the flash banner being on a 'loop' and to get it to run once only, and see if I can replace <title> tags with <h1> and <h2> tags..
Anyhow, in summary THANKS EVERYONE!
Matt

Re: Thanks to sitereference....
Firstly - well done!
The new site's looking great already, but still very web 1.1; have you explored web 2.0 yet?
[web 1.1 and web 2.0 are terms for design/interaction concepts rather than new hard/software]

Fair point, but the difficulty I have is that our market is very split - on one hand we have architects who would 'get' the added interaction of web 2.0 stuff - but experience says, even that is minimal. I think they would also appreciate the web 2.0 design style...
Our other clients are builders/contractors who really don't get anything - many still run on faxes rather than emails for quotes etc(and that's big companies with multi-million pound turnovers!). Trying to persuade them to interact in any way could be difficult. Experience says they need a site they feel like they can trust, but not a lot else....after that they want to call you and send a fax....
Its a hard call, but I don't think our market is ready for web 2.0 stuff yet - however, when the company has the cash for a proper site rebuild in a couple of years time....

Wow…first I got an email yesterday morning saying how much the sender liked SR, now I see this, this morning…love starting my days off like that!
Thanks a lot Matt- I’m sure everyone who spends their valuable time helping people here appreciates hearing positive comments like that
But on a serious note…let’s talk about those beers… hehe (jk)

Re: Thanks to sitereference....
New site- will post it up when complete.
One question - do the <h1> <h2> tags make a big difference? Me being a muppet is making a hash of changing the <title> tag to <h2> and <h2>....

Do you mean; is there a measurable difference between a H1 and H2?
Or do using prominence factors (bold, italic,H1-5,bullets) make a difference?

I guess that is the question - i just want to make certain titles and key words stand out (both to readers and se)....
Which is 'best' (if at all.....)

Re: Thanks to sitereference....
My common sense advice, is to look at a magazine. They use a wide variety of prominence factors. This is not only good for a search engine but for your marketing efforts as far as a 'call to action' - 'unique selling proposition' areas are concerned as well.
It is a good habit most certainly on many levels

I think that is my slight confuzzlement....
There is <title> in the head to to title the page.
but I then also have <title> as the headings in grey on the way down... hmmm

Re: Thanks to sitereference....
the <title> tag is only allowed to be a direct child of <head>; and is not allowed to be a child of <body>
The body is for formatting and content; so one would use a heading(<h1>....<h6>); whereas the <head> is for information about the page
