Let's get Anti-Social

Ok.. I had another Foray into Social Media Marketing

I know most of the gang here have less than bubbling enthusiasm for SMM and from there I began to experiment to see what this is all about more than the limited experiences I personally had.

I have been able to play with some folks that are big on it and certainly can see some values in it. I just figured I post my latest ramble and open the floor to any discussions in regards to utilizing SMM. I am interested in even grabbing a few sites for examples from ya'll.. see how it goes....

Re: Let's get Anti-Social

i agree that SMM does have merit, however for me, it just doesn't produce the best results for my time

but perhaps the reason i'm saying/have experienced that is that i have not found the best ways to leverage SMM- because i do think it would play well with some of my sites including this one

the big problem i have with the strategies i've tried is that they are very time consuming, and as you point out in your articles aren't a one-time thing- it's constantly very time consuming

that's a luxury i don't have, so my choices are:

> outsource it- however i would need a great deal of faith in that person, and would want to see measurable results for my $ (which can be tricky with SMM)

> find more time efficient practices- know any good ones? lol

Re: Let's get Anti-Social

We ran a sensationalized article on both Reddit and Digg this afternoon for the first time:
http://reddit.com/info/61jzq/comments/
http://digg.com/business_finance/The_Re … uy_Hummers

Both are doing very well so far and if we don't get a lot of negative votes we should be be successful on both.

Re: Let's get Anti-Social

slightly off topic but aligned - if you look at this page http://www.orientalcookbook.coDOTuk/ you will see the ability to easily add to Digg, Redit etc

Is this done with a plugin for wordpress?

Usually..... Look at the bottom of my posts; http://www.huomah.com/internet-marketin … eting.html

Those are an addon for Joomla .... same gig. Most Blogging apps have simple modules for that stuff.....

@CC - what Charles said. It's not about being able to hit one out of the park now and again. It is about what conversion metric is achieved and what is the associated cost. Considering it is all but a Branding excercise, we have the age old struggle of assessing the value of branding activities.

I have had a TON of traffic from Social Media as well as traditional media sources (SlashDot, TechCrunch etc..)... question is what do they do? Where do they go? and what does it mean?

I know what it all means to me, I now have to figure out what it means to my clients. I am gonna have to play with a Ginuea pig outside of my comfort zone (charles?)

Re: Let's get Anti-Social

Gypsy:  As I mentioned, this is our first experiment with smm, and our expectations are low. Measurement of Step A - we paid attention to activity (votes on the sm sites, and corresponding pageviews on our site).  Measurement Overall:  once a little time has passed, we hope to see a few links, any ranking this page might have gathered, and we'll watch the stats to see if any volume of visitors come (and convert) from a specific url.

In my opinion, as long as the costs are fairly trivial, why not experiment with smm a little? We don't expect it to have much impact, but smm is just one tool of a wide assortment to use.  The measurements I described are loose and anecdotal - and I doubt anyone has significantly better analytics without exhausting time and resources that probably aren't warranted - but maybe you can surprise me with some insight we overlooked.  I welcome your thoughts.  Thanks.

Re: Let's get Anti-Social

We have also seen SMO as a mixed bag. AT best we have had one day rockets for items we have alerted the socials to go look at...

I also assume that we do not have the time to fashion articles and link bait properly for the socials due to owner / operator time constrainsts.

My number one benefit seen from socialism online is that it defers my clients from calling me everyday asking what they can do to help. Many clients want to go faster for less money and will give you a helping hand to properly promote their Internet real estate. So we tell them.... go look at Digg and submit an article or use twitter, me.dium or other demographic matching socialist marketing arena. Typically we consult the first day on the ins and outs and the do's and don'ts to avoid getting flagged as astroturfers even though they are the real owner.

From there the client will engage in daily activities two to three times a day. The more viral and passionate the client the better our search engine optimization modalities meet the expected outcome or exceed the expected outcome for client satisifaction and retention [//another ball of wax]

Thank you for the interesting SMO thoughts to start our day off with; reminding us that all aspects of Internet marketing are important 'drops' in the bucket to conversions and return on investiments.

cordially,

Seharness
