Domains... here or there?
Mkay, header doesnt make much sense but it sounded clever and catchy in my head
Lets say i have a domain name... lalibela.net for example, at the moment there is a robots file that prevents the search engines from noticing or giving it a snowballs chance in hell of being indexed - thats great because its in development still.
In the next month, the original domain which hosts the original site on a microsoft asp server will need to magically become the new website. For example sake - lets call it lalibela.co.za, i know i can simply redirect lalibela.co.za to lalibela.net... that should be a fairly seemless process with no downtime and hopefully (easy dave) the page rank and link love is transferred/stays alive.
The question comes in when i need to redirect other more specific urls... eg lalibela.co.za/lifestyle.php would redirect to lalibela.net/lifestyle.php (or a subdomain eg lifestyle.lalibela.net) - seeing as though i registered a domain and sorted out the hosting for the first time in my life (even though ive been building sites for over a year - since registering here actually) just a month or so ago, im still not all that clued up on how the redirecting works and what i should tell the asp bastards to do?
Does asp have an htdocs file? Can i tell the htdocs file to display lalibela.net as lalibela.co.za as i would with .php and .html? All questions i sadly cannot answer for myself
.... where is that puppy dog eyes icon?... aaargh

You mean does IIS have an htaccess file? And will mod-rewrite be installed?
The answer is no;
but if you are running IIS (a windows server) and you have control of your dns records (ie you can tella dns server which ip to resolve to) then you can point all the domains you want to the same IP (te IP of you IIS server) and then tell IIS to pick up the various domain names
This would do a blanket copy of a site; rather than a redirect
There are mod-rewrite plugins for IIS but they're expensive and don't work very well
PR and link love doesn't seem to transfer as nicely as it used to

Re: Domains... here or there?
oh...
oh well, as i said, first time i played with a host about a month ago
Plus i know that the only thing i should look for is apache-linux and the supported version of php and msql... the rest should go smoothly
i guess it sucks about the links etc but it cant be helped... plus the new site is better for seo by a long long shot than the old so any downer should be fixed up in no time once the old site is removed and google indexes the shiny one.
My main concern though, the lifestyle example... do you reckon that is possible from a domain name that will no longer be hosted - just simply forwarding?
