Well, thanks fellas!
You've given me so much to study and consider. And all this overnight, as we in Australia slept.
May I point out that it isn't about being lazy. Nor is it about having the best, broadest or most versatile. It's about having something to work with that will adequately do my job and that I can handle, given my limited ability.
Hey! I've come a long way, these couple of years. matte could vouch for that. I've really appreciated the help and encouragement of the good people at SR.
My news service is up and running. WP seems adequate for this because the concept is essentially a blog. I post news, others post news, people comment on the news, readers place and read ads as well as the news. So long as the service remains within those bounds, WP will be the ideal platform.
The other project, the site for which I need a CMS, is really quite simple. It's already had two lives.
First build was with a home made template, completely hand coded and with a css file. Then I went to a Gala Layout template for the improved SEO.
But the same thing beat me that beats me with all my home made sites: they just get too big to handle manually.
So it's looking like I may go for phpWCMS. The frustration is that there is no proper help file. There are bits and pieces of tutorials written by helpful people whose primary language is not English, in the forum. Makes it a bit hard.
Thanks,
Laurie.

I agree with Gypsy about Joomla being a well supported CMS. The forums even have local sub-forums if you want to interact with people from your locality who uses Joomla.
And Laurie... I think Joomla will help you solve your problem.

Nobody could ever help me out in a joomla-forum
I wasn't so impressed with the Joomla forum. Didn't seem to be dealing with my kind of issues. Saw enough to tell me I wouldn't fit in. Maybe I need to sign up and get amongst it. If that doesn't work I can just battle on alone. The Joomle forum was part of what turned me off it in the first place.
So, anyway, I've created a new favorites folder with all my Joomla links: back end, front end, tutorials, help, themes and the rest. That means I'm about to give it another try.
Northie will be pleased. The blurb says Joomla has a text editor similar to TextPad.
And Laurie... I think Joomla will help you solve your problem.
Looks good in the blurb. I've got to get my head around making it work.
Hope I can customize the theme as I want, with my own graphics, in the header especially.
Thanks for the links, Gypsy.
Regards,
Laurie.

any questions...email me. I used to eat and breath damned Joomla. I still play with it here and there ... I love it for SEO. Does just what I need it too.... you know my old routine, not traffic? What's the point. A CMS with an SEO advantage is a HUGE plus....
Should you decide to actually use it on a production site, let me know as there are security issues to be dealt with. It is a popular OPEN SOURCE aplication... care must be taken to secure it. :0) ..... just a little hint from a guy who has had to play footsies with hackers and popular apps for years .... usually it is site owners that don't keep up to date on security patches etc....

I second that, keep on top of it with patches and security or you can kiss goodbye to the server it resides on, I learned that one the hard way!
