Analytics and Conversions reading

Just passing along a few things I read this week (to be included in the Thursday Beer Break). We don't tend to post a whole lot in here, which I figure we should be... so here are some interesting starter tidbits

Example uses of the visitor engagement metric

SNIPPET -

My goal for this post is to provide a few examples and explanations to show how the metric can be used to supplement our otherwise already-rich set of web analytics data. Since so many folks have been willing to explore the engagement metric, I have embedded a bunch of questions in this post in italics that I’d love your feedback on.

Unlocking Key Performance Indicators

SNIPPET -

For the second installment in this series, we'll cover bounce rate (aka "reject rate"). Simply put, bounce rate measures the amount of visitors that are landing on your site and immediately bouncing off of it.

To qualify as a bounce, analytics tools will typically take all visitors who only see one page and leave. Time may also be used to qualify a bounce (e.g., any visit under 10 seconds as a bounce).*

Life after Search – A/B Split and Multivariate testing

SNIPPET -

A/B testing and/or multivariate testing is one of the best ways to improve results for your Web site. Only a small percentage of Web site owners invest in this effort, yet there are few things that offer a bigger return on investment. Sometimes the things that matter to users and increases conversions will surprise you.

And ther you have it... enjoy!!

Damn it Gypsy!!

I've been a webmaster for a whopping 27 seconds, and you still hand out nothing more than thousands of opinions. Why can't you just hold my hand like mommy does!!!!!!!!!!!

just out of curiosity do you personally use this much?

a/b testing was one of the first things i was advised i NEEDED to do- but to this day i still hardly ever use it altough i know how valuable it can be

i know that  reflects poorly on me but it's interesting how even though sometimes we know these little tib-bits that could really help us we simply don't apply them (in my case i have no excuse)

what software do you use for your A/B?

Re: Analytics and Conversions reading

Well, there are a variety of differeing applications out there, I prefer ones that are stand-alone and not part of a larger analytics package... just me.....

While we're at it, I once asked a Googler how to handle such things and here is the gig; You need to simply make sure that you have the NOINDEX/NOFOLLOW tags on at least ONE of the varients in the excercise. This avoids duplicate content and cloaking penalties..... jus so ya know...

I am a huge fan of MVT, problem is though not many clients are willing to pay for such things. In the end some leassons learned from A/B or MVT testing can take time to show an ROI (if hiring outside help) thus we don't sell it much.... for the webmaster or site owner though, I feel it is a great excercise and can truly show a reasonable return in a short period of time....

Do I get to do it much? Not really... unfortunately, it's fun stuff.....
