Browsers, Screens, Oh my!

In another thread I pointed out the nightmare of a redesign I recently went under, in regards to the menu.

Looks like everything was working well, until WS pointed out that it's not quite right on his screen. But he also has a wide screen monitor, making things all that much more difficult.

I did a quick look on-line (VERY quick), and stumbled across some site selling a package software that is suppose to show you what it looks like in several browsers, and screen res's. It was also pretty darn expensive, despite the fact that it handles only two screen resolutions.

So I peaked in my G analytics to find out what screen res my users have, and what a surprise! I knew I'd get the occasional oddball from time to time, but some of this stuff is just way out there!

Here's a break down for one month's worth of visitors -

1024 x 768 - 75 Visitors
1280 x 800 - 20
800 x 600 - 19
1280 x 1024 - 13
1440 x 900 - 11
1152 x 864 - 4
1400 x 1050 - 3
1152 x 870 - 1
1280 x 720 - 1
1280 x 768 - 1
1280 x 960 - 1
1360 x 768 - 1
1680 x 1050 - 1
1920 x 1200 - 1
971 x 708 - 1

If these numbers are correct (what the heck is 971 x 708?!?!?), then I fear this could easily be affecting my conversions if the site is not rendering properly.

But how would I know, without buying $4,000 worth of equipment?

I'm sure developing a tool to figure these things out would be next to impossible, but could we come up with some other options? Donated time by Nic and a couple of moderators that happen to have regular AND wide screen monitors?

More and more wide screens are being sold each day, which I think is partially why I have such weird stats (most of my visitors in this market are probably, just now, getting their first computer).

I know adding a tool, or feature like this to SR could be quite a large task, but it could add a heck of a lot more 'stick' value to the forum..... not to mention, help solve some of that 'Why doesn't everyone sign up' issue.

Could be a great addition to the Site Review section! blinka

Re: Browsers, Screens, Oh my!

for $4000 you could get a very nice comp, a 4  head video card and 4 different size moitors big_smile

i'm open to adding it if someone wants to build it but persoanlly I am swamped under a boatload of projects at the moment - i like the idea though so if anyone wants to try feel free to PM- i'm sure we could work something out

In the meantime Stich (or anyone else) if y0u need help checking feel free to send me any URL via the PM (altough i normally keep mine set to 1280 x 768 or i can't see jack)

Re: Browsers, Screens, Oh my!

I set mine to 1024 x 768 also.

I wouldn't mind setting it to other screen res's to test out, but my desktop is so packed with with icons for projects I'm working on, that everything would get tossed around like popping popcorn. hahahah

Anyways, of those screen resolutions I posted, I don't know which ones are wide screen or standard, nor do I know whats common for wide screen. Nor do I know anything about Safari users.

I could potentially put the foot work in by testing with what I can, contact all sorts of other people, and fix things as they come in... however, that could lead into a full weeks worth of work constantly fixing, waiting for replies, testing again, etc.

Just would be nice to have some sort of tool or even a step by step process nailed down here to get through the matter in a relatively short period of time.

Like I mentioned in a PM to stitch, the link for “Boat Accessories” is directly over the word Marine. Unfortunately my laptop is not with me at the moment.

Its your basic Compaq with XP, IE 7, and I believe it is set to ether a 1280 by 768 or 1280 x 800 resolution.

Hey, perfect time to mention this!

http://www.browsershots.org

Free, but it does take time to get results. Worth checking out, and its actually pretty damn cool. Probably not the best bet for what your looking for, but could be used as a supplementary service.

Anyways, check it out, cant hurt glad

Thanks,

Waiting in line right now. I poked around and it seems that they have quite a backlog.

Noticed that they have the source for download too, but I'm guessing you still need to have a bunch of systems available to do it.

Just gotta remember to "Extend" your time. Set a reminder or an alarm or something glad

Its a relatively new service, hopefully they grow to add longer request times and faster processing, but for a free service it ROCKS!

Re: Browsers, Screens, Oh my!

There is no need for browser shots or $4000 of equipment - you fools!

step 1 - get a monitor that is big enough that you can put all those dimensions inside of it it (if you don't have one, $200)

step 2 - download firefox

step 3 - get the web developer toolbar for fire fox

step 4 - use the screen size tool of the web dev tool bar to accurately rezise your browser

step 5 - view site

If you're thinking "but i want to test in more that just firefox" then you're a fool too as you can use your firefox window as a template for manually resizing other windows

Re: Browsers, Screens, Oh my!

Lol.... i feel your pain stitch... oh boy do i ever feel your pain

http://www.gwema.org/desktop.jpg

I run two 19" widescreens at work and one at home, all are set 1440x900 and surprisingly i havent seen any websites appear odd on any of them...I actually find that most websites display better on a high res wide screen simply because the page dimensions dont get cramped by the browser.

As far as testing your site on different resolutions go, i would suggest you just go with the right click>properties>settings>screen resolution.... APPLY approach... its a hell of a lot cheaper than paying for it and its a damn side easier than coding it.. Who knows, it may inspire you to organize your icons a bit... hasnt inspired me but ye never know big_smile

Re: Browsers, Screens, Oh my!

That fire fox tool is pretty neat, however I couldn't resize the window any larger than what I have the screen res set too.

Unless I'm doing something wrong?

My res is set to 1024 x 768

Trying to view it in 1280 x 1024

Switch your resolution to 1280 x 1024, then you can change it back after you've checked everything out.

Re: Browsers, Screens, Oh my!

Well, I guess switching UP isn't so bad, everything seems to stay in place.

Switching down will be the problem, but it appears the FF toolbar already has a setting for that. There's only that one oddball setting in my list up top..... but I won't worry about that.

Anyways, the last problem I have is that the computer won't change to anything higher than 1280, so I'm not totally sure what to do for that, besides hanging out all day at that link Mark dropped.

Re: Browsers, Screens, Oh my!

Im guessing you only have a 17" monitor then? on a 19" you can go 1600x1400, you can still jimmy your graphics card and monitor drivers to allow you to go higher on your current monitor but its not as easy as it used to be on win98 so i wouldnt really be able to tell you how. Plus there is no real point in stressing about such high resolutions, if people do use them chances are they are accustomed to seeing things very differently than normal people,

Re: Browsers, Screens, Oh my!

Firstly - ambiguation

a screen size of 1024*768 is a size and not a resolution
a resolution would be 72dpi

I've never had problems with large size screens

I have seen problems with large screens that use a fluid width and floats

The main worry is the small screen browsers.

browser hieght tends not to break anything unless you align elements at the bottom of the page

Today i develop for of 1024*768 and figure that people with browsers smaller than that are 'used to scrolling'

I've not used google analtics but here's one thougt - browwers can send back two sets of dimensions

set A - the screen size
Set B - the browser window size

Are you sure you know which one is being logged?

Good question.... I wouldn't even know how to check that. hahahha

Just might leave it as is, since most of the traffic appears to work fine with that layout.

Resolution signifies the number dots per inch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution

Adjusting DPI changes the dots per inch (dpi) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dots_per_inch

Re: Browsers, Screens, Oh my!

I use a utility called Size-O-Matic: http://www.pythoness.com/

You simply choose the resolution you want then click in ANY window to resize it to that size. Works in any browser, any app, any explorer window, it's excellent! You can add your own custom window sizes as well.

I love that it's a really low tech solution. Oh, and did I mention that it's free?
