Re: How to copyright your articles?

G'day cipher.

Work out what you're trying to accomplish with your article.

Choose one use for your article and use it in this way. That's the way to get the most value out of it. Trying to get multiple mileage out of your article will cause a loss in value. You'll have that much duplicate content of your article that the SEs won't want to know about it.

Your options seem to be:
1)  Put it on your site.
2)  Distribute it through a press release distribution service, if it's a press release.
3)  Distribute it through an article distribution service, if it's an article.
4)  Submit it to an appropriate website for reproduction. If it was a webmaster article you could submit it to SiteReference.
5)  Send it to an appropriate print media such as an on topic magazine.

I think you'll be waiting a while for a reply from the newspapers regarding your request for help. They're into news, not help.

Regards,
Laurie.

Re: How to copyright your articles?

put a copyright notice on it - and ask that if people would like to use its contents to contact you first.

The every now and then do a search on a string of text and see if it is out there and if so ask people to at least linkback to you if they have not done so already.

I'd have a modified version for use in reprinting and use the best one on your own site

This is good advice, and I go one step further by giving people permission to use an article (without needing to contact me first) providing they keep the article, links and authors bio attached.

If the article is valuable and well written , most people will do the right thing and appreciate that you are giving them permission without any hassle of waiting to hear back after they've made contact.

There is no point getting too caught up in tying to protect an article, just keep writing good ones and people will seek you out as an expert in your field. Focus on that aspect. But, also take Matt's other advice by doing...

Making people be accountable is an important aspect and doing it in a nice way like this will gain you added respect.

All the best Cipher, and I supect there will be quite a few other people out there who would like to have asked this question.

Re: How to copyright your articles?

In the USA you have copyright as soon as you write it, but...

"Under the law, if your copyright is infringed, you can't sue unless the work has been registered with the U.S. Copyright Office."

But if you want to know more about how to protect your work you should read Why and how to register your articles

Re: How to copyright your articles?

Hello,
I have posted the article on my site You can visit the site to check it out. This is my first article so I would need your suggestions and comments I'll post that as a new topic in the forum please reply there...
Topic is- 'Happiness and peace'

Here's a brief,
Life is all about attaining peace and happiness, isn't it? Just wait and think for a moment... I know that your answer is certainly yes. If god suddenly appears out of haze in front of you and asks you a wish, that will instantly granted... then asking for ' peace and happiness' will be the fastest and safest way, to ask everything that counts. Even if these 'two' words feel like synonyms to each other, they are rather very difficult to have simultaneously.

Happiness is a feeling of human mind which makes him enjoy the present decor of life. It is enjoyment that makes you feel this emotion called happiness. Mostly It is the 'transitions' that arouse happiness. Transitions are the changes that happen in life, the phases or the spells that differ from each other are separated from each other with
a 'transition'. This is my own phenomenon so I will have to explain it with an example... If 'sea' and 'land' are phases, then the coast or beach is the 'transition'. ever wondered, why the most beautiful places are beaches- where the land meets sea, or snow covered mountains- where the ice seams meets the sky, or the first rain after a sunny noon, or just why do we cherish dusk or the dawn, and the list is endless, just think of a while and you will find all your happy moments surrounding these transitions. Let me just clear the example a bit more with respect to life-
Ever had something you wanted desperately... that is happiness, now, ask a question to yourself, after a while does that thing provide you happiness. It is just like having a glass of water when you are thirsty, you have one glass and you feel 'good' this emotion is happiness, but what happens with a second glass or a third glass of water? So  happiness is just like a mirage the only difference is, it sooths you for a while and then shifts further. It is not completely an illusion but none the less of it...

continued... on website

Just to clarify something for myself regarding copyright...

I am under the impression that the words that we post on a forum belong to the forum owner, or the forum owner has the right to use them as his own - is that correct?

Re: How to copyright your articles?

I will be the first to say that your article is very... nice to know? tummenupp One thing i would look at though is your punctuation and layout, you dont want to reverberate the same point over and over again or get run to the ground by grammar critics.

Atwhatcost is full of article writing tips glad

Anywho, what i was going to say was that despite the feeling of self security that comes with a copyright - it is useless. Once your article hits the net it is essentially up for grabs by anyone who spots it... like a forum, anyone can copy the images and text.... morality, decency and what is legal really is irrelevant to someone who wants it. The best thing to do is make it good enough for people to respect it, most wont, some will... those few people that do should give you enough satisfaction and hopefully some link love at the same time, if you get caught up in who can and cant touch it you will just end up wasting valuable time worrying when it could be used to strengthen your creative side or get ruthlessy drunk with a loved one.

In a perfect world copyrighting is a good way to mark your territory, in the real world... i could copy your entire site with text - articles - links, paint it pink and make it my own by changing a few key sentences... i wouldnt do that but never be fooled into thinking people cant.

Peace and happiness doesnt come to people who worry about who is picking flowers out of their garden. big_smile

Re: How to copyright your articles?

lol lol im glad you enjoyed it, the facts of life are often humorous wouldn't you say big_smile if its not copyrighting you are after but rather the knowledge that its yours it is best to publish it on your site first, the time stamp on the net wont lie, like books and what not once it is written and published it is yours forever unless someone can prove without doubt that they wrote it first, if someone copies it as their own on their site they will suffer the duplicate content penalty (penalty is the wrong word but im at a loss for the right one right now tongue ) ... not you, as you put it online first. So really, no stress.

Article publishing in my knowledge is about either a: getting some useful info out to the world b: getting people to publish your article on their sites and linking it back to you so you can reap the benefits of incoming links c: both a and b.

you may find many articles that are quite pointless and poor in quality and usefulness... these are b: done in a hurry and for the pure purpose of link building, thats pretty much articles as i understand them. Some people are a few articles away from being spammers in my opinion.

All the tips above (previous posts by matte and laurie) are pretty much all the advice you will need if you want get into it to reap the benefits.

Hope that helped tummenupp

Re: How to copyright your articles?

Its positive, i reckon your article is a "feel good" article which is rare to say the least, not trying to sell anything or get anything back from it...its simply a revelation or dare i say - a realisation of the obvious.

Refreshing in my opinion.

Re: How to copyright your articles?

In order to prove copyright you have to establish the date it was first published to the public. The difficulty with online publishing is that it is all too easy to manipulate creation dates - screenshots prove the contents but not the date. Many unscrupulous scrappers will Photoshop a new date in whatever print out is made. You could try to rely on the search engines cache of a document however that could be too late particularly if the page was not indexed until weeks after its creation. You could try and refer to the waybackmachine for older URLS however this is not always reliable as not very url is indexed.
The old trusted techniques still apply when providing a court or tribunal with evidence of first date publication. I.e. send the material in a sealed recorded delivery envelope to your solicitor/bank and ask them to deposit it in their safes until needed, keep the recorded delivery slip. Publication in a newspaper proves the material is as least as old as the date of the newspaper.

Depends on what the forum rules and ToS are that you agreed to.....if, like my article site, it says that the copyright passing straight to me then that's what happens and people who don't like it don't write for me!
