Is PPC good for seasonal items?
I am thinking of using PPC to promote seasonal items, like, say, dog costumes for halloween. Is this a good idea? I don't see how I could get to the top of the SEs with keywords when these items are only on my site for about a month. Any input?

Re: Is PPC good for seasonal items?
Certainly, using PPC is traditionally the fastest way to go about things. It's more a matter of how much it will cost and how many folks are actually going to search for it.
Did you do anything last year? Or is this the first halloween online?

Re: Is PPC good for seasonal items?
I think PPC is a good way to do it - bearing in mind the cost / conversion aspects. If it costs you say 20c per click and 1/100 buy, are you still profiting, or worse, 1/200 ???
I'd also consider some way of capturing people's emails, like a competition or giveaway etc, so even if the don't buy, they may volunteer their email which has value

Re: Is PPC good for seasonal items?
I agree because you have the option to turn on/off your campaign so if you just want to spend a certain amount around a specicif time of year it gives you that option
if Gypsy's "guess" is right and this is for halloween it would be a good idea to use this year if your site is relatively new....but with some effort perhaps you can increase your SERP for next year's

Re: Is PPC good for seasonal items?
Yes, this is my first actual season. I have only been live since The end of March. I have only used ppc sucessfully with Google on my top product, but I don't have a problem setting up more campaigns if it is worth it. I didn't even think about it until I got an email from one of my suppliers saying that some of halloween costumes I advertise are already sold out! Dang! I think I have only had a dozen or so hits for halloween costumes in the week I have had them on my site. Thanks, you guys!

Re: Is PPC good for seasonal items?
doggybooty, PPC can help with seasonal items, one thing I would recommend is that you try using the Ad Scheduling feature for your Campaigns. I think you will have a better ROI if you run them during peak online shopping periods. Here is my take on it, people shop while at work and on Sunday afternoons. I wouldn’t waste your budget on Saturdays.

Re: Is PPC good for seasonal items?
Good to know! I started a campaign with Google just now, and I still have $ left from the microsoft $50 in free ads. I think I will advertise with them, too, even though I don't get very many clicks from them. I have been on the same $50 since the offer started 2 omnths ago!

Re: Is PPC good for seasonal items?
There are a few in here that are real good on managing PPC campaigns and I am sure they will stop by and give you more advice. I am not saying this to be mean, but based on what I am reading in your posts it may be advantageous for you to pause the campaigns until you get a better grasp on setting up and managing them. I hate seeing people lose money unnecessarily.

Re: Is PPC good for seasonal items?
I don't have a problem with Google-adwords is pretty straightforward. I do get sales from that campaign. The one I don't get much traffic from is the Microsoft one. I am playing around with that one right now because I am still using the free $50 in clicks that I got a couple of months ago. Microsoft is a little less user-friendly than adwords, I think.
If I stop my Google ad campaign, I think I will lose buyers. About half my sales come from ppc. Should I stop the Microsoft one? I just did an ad for dog halloween costumes, and I think setup went more smoothly than the last campaign. I set a $20 limit on it so I can see how it does, but I do have to admit you are right in saying I don't have a very firm grasp on it.

Re: Is PPC good for seasonal items?
Thanks for the link, Nic!
I read the article. Wow. I have a lot to learn about PPC. I am not sure what all of the columns mean in the google adwords graph. For my longest running campaign, my ctr is 0.97%, conversion rate 85.6%, and cost per conversion $0.54. That';s not very good, huh? I will use the suggestions in the article and remove the content network (it says I have had 1 click on 2,470 impressions, but that my conversion rate is 100%? I dont get it). Also, I added some very exact keyword phrases with brackets around them and paused a lot of general keywords. Hopefully these changes will make for a better campaign!

Re: Is PPC good for seasonal items?
K so I took some suggestions and dropped some extraneous keywords, put some keyword phrases in brackets, and dropped th Google contents inclusion. I do think the numbers are better, but could someone tell me what a good ctr, conversion rate, and cost/conversion would be?
Thanks!
doggybooty.

Re: Is PPC good for seasonal items?
Wow you guys!
I took one of the suggestions in the article and switched off Google for ad content, and the first week I was sweating bullets. I lost a lot of traffic, and had no buyers.
THEN-
Last week I made sales every day. My traffic is more qualified. I have a much better conversion rate. People are buying! Yay! You guys are right. I have saved a ton of money on Google adwords just with that one little change.
