To Join or Not to Join?
One of our members pointed out to me this morning that there seems to be a high “Visitor” to “Member” ratio on the forums at all times and we got into a conversation about why people chose to join and participate and why some chose not to…well instead of speculating any more I simply decided to ask people here…
This is a 2 part question aimed at 2 different audiences…
1) FOR THOSE THAT HAVE NOT SIGN-ED UP TO THE FORUMS (although you'll need to sign-up to answer this question): why have you not joined the community yet? I know you can learn a lot by reading but you can learn more by directly posting the questions you want answered. Any particular reasons that hold you back from joining and posting yourself?
2) FOR EXISTING MEMEBERS: What made you decide to join in the first place? And a follow-up for those thatparticipate on an ongoing basis….what keeps you here?
I’m going to leave this open for a while…and hope to get some good feedback
If anyone wants to answer in private please feel free to PM me
[Or if anyone ever wants to discuss anything else my PM door is always open- love feedback both negative and positive because after all I'm learning just like everyone else]
Thanks for the replies to the Q’s above!

Re: To Join or Not to Join?
First, are you certain that the little 'visitor' counter isn't picking up SE bots? (Not that I would know how any of that works....)
Second, could it be that people are doing a search on any given SE, and the result is a SR thread.... which answers their question? (analytics, here we come)
At the time of this writing, I see 4 registered, and 17 guests. All the guest slots could be filled by the above scenarios.
Also, I see at DP there are 628 members logged in, and 1507 guests. So what you see just might be normal....

Re: To Join or Not to Join?
You could be right Stitch but the ratio of real visitors to members isn't really what i am after here...my real interest in this question is why some decided to join and some don't
After all, how many times have you heard "I have been reading the forums and the newsletter for a while, and finally decided to register..." (if you look at the intro's you will see this often)
So my question is "what makes people finally decide to register"?

Re: To Join or Not to Join?
For me it was a posts in the newsletter.
For a few weeks i read with interest.
I had joined forums before, but could never remember the password, etc, no one ever answered my questions etc...
Then one day I saw a post that asked a question that I could answer. The existing replies weren't up to much so i offered my advice.
While I was there I started answering other people's questions, etc etc
Why did i stick around?
in the beginning I wanted to build a name for myself; I wanted the help and respect of other members and felt that to get that I should try and help others where I could.
It worked, as well!
After that it just become 'one of those communities' - sometimes I would learn new stuff, I would keep an active eye out for cross examination of my posts and answering more questions from threads i had helped out in. Then I'd see another new thread I could help with.....and the circle goes on

Re: To Join or Not to Join?
I don't remember how I got to this site, but I do remember that I was searching for something. Previously I had joined almost every single forum that came up so that I could learn but the answers that people gave were not very helpful, more of a sales pich. I did not join this forum right away, kind of was a lurker to see how it went day by day.
Liked what I saw and read, joined. (never went back to the others, except for two)

Re: To Join or Not to Join?
First a note on "Visitors": If I'm just seeing what posts have been updated, or what new discussions have been added, I usually don't log in (up till the point that I decide I want to reply to something). Until I do log in, I'm considered a visitor. I imagine other regulars do the same from time to time. So a visitor isn't always a visitor.
As to why I joined, when I started looking into SEO, I found this page, and I joined so I could start asking questions. I stay so I can continue to learn, but also to help others with what I've learned.

Re: To Join or Not to Join?
Well my first visits basically consisted of reading. I had a commitment to myself and the desire to learn, but I really did not want to post until I felt that I could contribute something. Probably one of the motivators for actually signing up was the level of confidence (and maybe subtle arrogance) in some of the posts. I liked the fact that many of the posts not only contained viewpoints or criticisms, but they were also followed up with solutions that were doable with my skill sets at that time.
But after actually signing up things really were not what I thought they would be. At that time my initial impression that there were 2 trains of thought, “your going to fail if you use FrontPage” as well as “if that’s what you have to work with, why don’t you try this”. Well I am still using FP so you can figure out the path I favored.
I think if a person sticks around any forum long enough they cant help but gain more knowledge. And frankly it’s a bit satisfying to know that you made a post that helped someone avoid some of the pitfalls that you may have encountered in the early days, so you just stick around.
IMO there are some very brutal forums on the web, but for the most part this is not one of them.
So if you are a visitor and you are reading this thread, please don’t hesitate to sign up with this particular forum. You just need the desire to learn, you don’t need anything like a certification in rocket science to participate.

Re: To Join or Not to Join?
Ok OK... I have been watching this one long enough....
Here's the problem... U guys are all long time members and obviously folks that are attracted to SR. I want to hear from people with less than 100 posts or 3 months in.... ( not Ninak in this rant - thanks Nin)
I want some one to REGISTER RIGHT NOW yes this means YOU lurker friends .... and tell me why they didn't do so earlier?? Intimidated? Just like reading?? We're a scary bunch ( except Lizzy of course) .. what is it?
Are you a recent member?? Or one that left cause we're jerks?? Tell me dammit!! You can have free stuff as well.
I will give away free copies of the ol SEO Handbook (Google it or my Sig he he) ..... to any noobs that help out!!!
I want to know why so many folks read so long before participating.. or why they DID sign up.... not those of us that are entrenched....
SO... are you reading this thread and are relatively new here or not registered at all??? Give some insight as to how we can possibly encourage more interaction with the 'lurkers'...
We love U long time an I give U $10 ebook!!!
... there.. I said it.... U may resume your activities now.
Oh and Nin... PM me yer email addy and I will send U a copy of the eBook if yer interested :0)

Now Dave...I fit into one of those categories...so my memory is very fresh.
I signed up because I wanted a site review...period!
As it turns out I started making posts and found I had something valuable to contribute - I'm not here to sell anything, in fact most of the time I am reluctant to drop the links to my websites.
I enjoy having the thank you's added next to my name - makes me feel useful/worthwhile/appreciated.
So the motive to join was much different to the motive to stay. Never-the-less I am grateful I did.

Re: To Join or Not to Join?
Dammit... i got suckered in with free stuff... worse than that its free stuff i already got for free
I guess i dont qualify anyway, perhaps the best way to get visitors would be to be very vague on some topics, thus forcing the little gypsy out of em to the point where they cannot stand not writing back in rage... thus they join... I like lurkers though, at least now i dont think im being watched... i know im being watched....

Re: To Join or Not to Join?
I'm a new member (registered earlier this month) in the same category mentioned yesterday - I joined a few forums before, but could never remember the password, etc.
A secondary reason someone would remain a "visitor" on this forum is that this overall topic is not necessarily what we do for a living (I actually wrote: Expert in Equipment Finance - but Novice in SEO, attempting to learn.. ) the day I signed in.
I read alot of posts, but don't have much to contribute (yet) - so I'm reduced to looking only for opportunities to relate perspective from a novice - yet I learn a ton from reading and following links in these posts, so I keep coming back.

Re: To Join or Not to Join?
Firstly,
I haven't contributed to this forum or a while, but I got all kinds of trouble (my fault I forgot my password) when i tried to log in again
i received the following email
Hello hcdmike,
You have requested to have a new password assigned to your account in the discussion forum at http://forums.site-reference.com/. If you didn't request this or if you don't want to change your password you should just ignore this message. Only if you visit the activation page below will your password be changed.

(Do not reply to this message)
I used hcdhmike and the password to login but it didn't work
anyway
now I can post because I have a new account
would rather have the other working but who gives a flyer
(been drinking today, had a tough week)
To address the problem of people signing up I've got a real simple thing
at the end of EVERY POST include a graphic or link that says "sign up to reply to this post" or "register to reply to this post"
you guys got to remember that most people are lazy, and yes you have the link to the sign up in your header but most will not do it, because most are lazy (like me)
I saw something in this post that begged me to respond, but it wasn't a simple process to do so.
I think everyone, including me (this has been a wakeup call for me) has to realize that we have to make absolutely everything that makes us money (product sale, signups, registrations, etc) as easy as possible to ensure we get the lazy f***s that populate the internet (me included).
CHEERS
this is my website (in signature panel below)- is undergoing a revamp - its too 90's but still works - see ya

Re: To Join or Not to Join?
Woop woop... it's drinking time!! I cracked one just to reply M8
Conversions (getting a visitor to take the desired action) is a big thing to learn in this biz. Most websites I have managed/worked on have around a 33% bounce rate. That is folks that stay less than 10 seconds or so. I watch these on sites as one of my primary indicators.
This conversation is past that some (folks that lurk instead of hangin out). But it general I am always interested in why people do what they do.
In this case, participation. Forums in general seem on the decline, so I am interested in why, and further to that if there is something that forum owners can do to increase interaction.
In the end, maybe some of us are talkers and others are lurkers. Nothing really wrong with it, I am just a curious knd o guy....
OH.. and did ya want a free SEO ebook??? U R a lucky winner if ye want to claim the prize :0)
