Re: Manipulate alexa ranks
1) Alexa ranks are not to be taken seriously- they serve a very ROUGH indicator of traffic...
ie...in looking at two sites: A and B…if i see Site A is ranked 100 an site B is ranked 1,000,000 the only conclusion i would make is that it is probable that site A gets more traffic the site B...i would certainly not think that site A receives 10,000 times more traffic then B
If instead I saw that site A is ranked 1,000 and site B is ranked 10,000 (a much narrower difference) i would NOT make that same conclusion- in real life site B could actually get more traffic the site A although (i know because I’ve seen it)
Alexa rank only matters to me when people who do not understand it ask me why my sites are ranked in certain positions- and I have to once again take the time to explain it to them
2) Absolutely not and neither should anyone. Why would you? The only thing I would pay for is quality targeted traffic (which is the aim of most advertising campaigns).
3) Site-Reference encourages good site building practices- not alexa rank or any other type of manipulation. In any case what would be the point? Why spend money/time on something that doesn't even matter- Alexa rank is only their “perception” of your site.
Spend your time/money where it counts….getting targeted traffic and converting that traffic into performing your desired actions….leave things like alexa rank and PR to people who don’t know any better.

Re: Manipulate alexa ranks
I own a site that specialises in article writing/home business opportunities - it's in the top 100 000 of alexa
I help out with a company that sell activity days [paintballing, quad biking etc] - they are no where to be found in alexa
The activity site gets more than 1000 times more traffic on a daily basis than the article site, yet alexa ranks it no where.
This shows that the niche/industry sector/vistor demographics are a big factor when looking at alexa.
TBA - i don't give a sh*t about alexa; they serve no meaning purpose in my life, work or business

Re: Manipulate alexa ranks
ok, i can understand your points! but then if a site has about 5,000,000 alexa ranks, then it is certain that it has no webmaster traffic, right!
i guess alexa ranks are a good measure of webmaster traffic, like this site has about 14k alexa ranks, and that means this sites gets good webmaster traffic,
on other niche, alexa don't really work that well!

Re: Manipulate alexa ranks
alexa is a ranking system, so the lower the numer, the more traffic the site gets,
eg - Yahoo.com has an alexa rank of 1
what do you mean by "webmaster traffic"?
I think it means when the person who makes the site (the webmaster) views his/her own site

Alexa only goes up to 4,000,000
And Alexa looks back at 3 months worth of data....if you have a new sites that gets tons of traffic you may be ranked 4,000,000 but in reality get more traffic then site 400

Re: Manipulate alexa ranks
Webmaster traffic means, traffic from us webmaster! usually the alexa toolbar, or the search status mozila plugin is used by the webmasters(who make and manage websites).
By webmaster traffic i mean, traffic from other webmasters, forum people, bloggers, directory owners, hope you get the point!
i have seen a website with alexa rank of, 6,500,000 may be these days, alexa don't give ranks over 4,000,000
cheers!

Forget Alexa
Direct your efforts elsewhere and you'll actually get some more qualified traffic

Re: Manipulate alexa ranks
I might be bumping an old topic, but Alexa rank DOES matter in SOME cases. A lot of the advertisers and advertising agents still use Alexa as means of determining an Ad's value. For example Text-Link-Ads uses the Alexa rank to determine a link's value on your website. So if you're actually selling links or ads directly (or through an ad agent) it would impact your earnings. Other than that, Alexa is usually more precise as the rankings go up, perhaps the top 10,000 or so give a better clue of your position (relative to other sites), but there's always a quite big tolerance level.
EDIT: Answering the questions:
1) dose alexa ranks matters to you - just slightly
2) will you pay to improve your alexa ranks - no
3) post ways and methods to manipulate Alexa ranks - visit your own site, put an Alexa gadget on your site. these are not actually manipulations, but allow you to get a better ranking nonetheless.

WOW, then they raelly shoud re-evaluate things if it is used to actually do market research. Of course if they use it to blow smoke up thier clients areses.. then great.
Not only is it totally unreliable as mostly other marketers and web professionals make up the core visitor rankings, but it is EASILY manipulated and there are TONs of scripts to do so.
If ' A lot of the advertisers and advertising agents' jumped off of a bridge, would you?

No, but I would have a thought about my Alexa rank if my income would depend on it.

No, but I would have a thought about my Alexa rank if my income would depend on it.
I can't see how anyone's revenue would be dependant on a skewed data source. I know some Text Link Ad spots use the AR and TBPR as part of the valuation process, but that's about it. -- maybe if your selling a domain and find a fish that doesn't know any better.
Alexa is simply an unreliable data set that no serious marketer values in their efforts.

Re: Manipulate alexa ranks
Here's what I do:
1. List my websites with Alexa.
2. Don't care about behind this point.
and to admit:
3. Check Alexa rank time by time (about once in a bi-monthly period) 'cause it's a good indicator for site popularity - but mainly about other webmasters and SEO people visiting a site...
Therefore I care for Alexa rank in regards to my web design related sites, but not so much for my health related sites for example...
Take Care,

Re: Manipulate alexa ranks
I really don't care either, about how Alexa ranks me. The only thing I do with Alexa is, I have their toolbar installed. Since they are silly enough to count hits from the webmaster, i might as well get credit for my own trips to my website. This usually shows that my website is increasing in traffic every month.

Re: Manipulate alexa ranks
I think Alexa is great... it makes me feel good to know that i have a controlling effect on something that isnt my own
if you want it to go higher... install the alexa toolbar and do some proof reading on your site... daily
and then one day, when butting heads with wannabe's you can pull out your almighty alexa rank and compare it to theirs... assuming they dont stare at their own site daily you should have great success
stoopid alexa, a more effective way of convincing people your site is popular would be to give someone 20 bucks to get his mates to run aruond screaming your url for all to hear and exclaiming how it makes them whole.

Re: Manipulate alexa ranks
Hi everybody,
one question that has not realy been covered here is:
Does Alexa bring any respectable amount of natural traffic to sites?
In other words: How popular is the Alexa search engine amongst web users?
Anybody?

Re: Manipulate alexa ranks
as far as i have seen... nobody really uses alexa for anything, its not an effective search engine at all... the only people i can imagine using alexa are some poor suckers who were told about it (for some unknown reason) think it is the safer tool for there daily use of the web... i could be entirely wrong, alexa could be popular somewhere... and cows could really be the most intelligent life form... who knows
