as a % if the inter-what?
google compared to.......?
Your question makes little sense.
Possible interpretations
1 - Does google have more pages in it's index than the other SEs?
2 - How many pages does Google have in it's index?
3 - What % of internet users use google?
Answers:
1 - No, Yahoo has more
2 - Unknown, estimated to be between 25 billions and 30 billion pages
3 - according to alexa - Yahoo 26%, google 24% - However, these figures are for anything on the given domain, so cannot be linked to search - http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traff … iverse.com
I seem to remember somewhere that google lead search at ~45%, yahoo at ~40%, msn at ~9% and others, ~6%

My question was intended to be open and subject to interpretation as most people have their own view of what constitutes the net , how it works ,the players etc....and how to measure it.

I have never met a person that doesn't know what google is. Certainly, google is used more in the media.
People say "I'll just google it"
I've never heard anyone say "I'll Yahoo it"
I'm not saying Google is better..just I just thing it's very well branded.
Currently I have a pretty even spread of hits from each of the top search engines (google, yahoo, msn etc). Google tends to be a little higher sometimes but I don't think it's statistically significant.

......because Google is branded so well it can be percieved to be bigger...it is therefor bigger...?
Interstingly, my traffic comes mainly from Google with very little from others...hence, I'd like io know what the facts are rather than perception....

The facts are difficult to come by due to the huge usage numbers
That's why statisticians use samples of data
The above link to the alexa traffic reach is the best you're going to get
Google no longer publish how big their index is, the last time yahoo mentioned their index size was in 2005 (that I could find) and that was 20 billion pages.
Demographics is also a consideration
MSN and Yahoo have established communities - google does not
Therefore the people that like to join online communities will tend to search on Yahoo or MSN, not google.
It would also be foolish to assume that topics searched for are evenly spread through the various demographics. (eg buying a new car, planning a holidy Vs looking for computer training or product reviews)

This tells me that the poeple who like to use Yahoo and MSN are not the sort of people interested in your products/services
If your user demographics tell you most of your traffic comes from google then use that to your advantage
Would traffic from community based sites like Yahoo and MSN convert as well as your Google traffic?

Well, looking at the bottom line, 76% of the traffic at Binoware comes from search engines. 54.87% of all traffic comes from Google, 8.65% from Yahoo, and 5.41% from MSN. Camerax has similar numbers. YMMV
I don't know what % of internet users use Google on a regular basis...
However i have never met an "Internet user" (in this case someone that has used the net even a few times) that has NEVER used Google
I'll be bold and claim that nearly 100% of people that have surfed the net a handful of times or more have used Google at least once

Nice take on it
100% of internet users use google for search
100% of internet users use Yahoo for search
Because the two are not mutually exclusive, a more pertinent question might be:
What percentage of all searches on the internet are performed by Google?
Even then, what are you going to do with the answer?

You can take it even further...
What percentage of searches come from external sites (those little "sponsored by Google" search boxes)?
What percentage of users go to Google first, Yahoo second, MSN third, etc?
What percentage of all web searches performed at Google are by members of Yahoo and MSN?
As for the job of figuring this out....NOT IT!

the answer is
No one knows, exactly
The best guess from experienced folk is just less than 50%
There is nothing to suggest that this will be reflected in your site's stats

The question wasn't connected to my sites stats...it was just a question born out of interest. In what other industry would you buy advertsing without demographics, stats, etc....?
I just wondred if anything had changed since I last heard page numbers, searches info being quoted alligorically.
Funny biz this.

When did buying advertising come into this?
That's a completely different take on things.
As we've discussed, demographics of search engines are different. this also goes with click through rates and CTRs are also dependent on industry sector.
I'd say learn how to use adwords, I don't have any useful numbers yet, but I'll search for some.....

The most recent report i could find, 22nd may 2007 (15 days ago)
Microsoft saw its share of the market slip to 9 percent, down from 10.1 percent a month earlier. Google, meanwhile, increased its lead, accounting for 55.2 percent of Web searches, up from 53.7 percent in March. Yahoo grew its share to 21.9 percent, up narrowly from the 21.8 percent share it held in March.
