Hi
i have a site thats alittle "adult" in theme. Not porno, or anything like that, it just sells discounted lingerie, toys, etc.
Anyhoo, i added a pics-Label to it, saying that its adult in theme. I thought it would be best to be open and honest and let everyone know what to expect when they got there.
But, despite getting a reasonable amount of backlinks, despite fairly good (IMHO) on page SEO, its still getting buggered in the SERPS.
Granted, its a fairly competetive industry, but Ive got other sites onto page one against 20 million results before, so why not against 3 million? or even worse, 297 on MSN!!
All I can think really, is the pics-Label is harming something. Anyone else had any experience of this?
Have you tried just removing the pic's thing to see if it works?
How old is the site?

No i haven't. Im abit sceptical about removing it yet. we dont wanna get kids falling onto the site, we're all parents with values and moral standards befitting our British heritage! If our kids went there we'd be appalled.
But then again, if it does bollox things up, its gone. standards or no, we gotta make money!
the site is only a couple of months old, so its still in the early stages. Ive just made some big changes to the structure and text today so i think ill leave it for awhile and see what happens.
unless, someone knows anything adverse about pics-labels................................

The # of results for a particular search is certainly not a solid indicator of a keywords competitiveness. Its possible that the industry you are in has more SEO-savvy people which would make getting that top ranking more difficult.
My guess to your actual question would be that your pics label isn't going to hurt you at all. Of course, removing it and seeing what happens could be interesting, but if anything I think it would help your rankings as you are being more straightforward about the content of your site.

Yeah tool, what Northie said
I dont think its just for adult related content. From what i can gather, ICRA (the pics-label people) are aiming to have all sites declare the kind of content with a label.
the place to get it is here: http://www.fosi.org/about/
Its quite simple to implement and involves having a couple of lines extra in your <head> and hosting a text file in your root and placing a link to your page on ICRA.
I think its a good idea. Ya never know, it might become a standard, or even compulsory.
Anyhoo, to the subject at hand. Ive gone right through the site and made quite alot of improvements. I suppose i was abit lazy on start up so have done all i can (i think). Im gonna leave it alone now for a couple of weeks and watch what happens to the rankings across the board.
Done a few things to increase backlinks, but because of the nature of the products, im finding it hard to get any Directories to submit to.
Ive added a link in my siggy incase anyone's interested. SR, tell me to remove it if it offends.

What they said..
I've got it basically set up to declare that mine is safe for kids. I've really got no idea if helps or not. My traffic has increased quite a bit, but I would attribute it to a few things I learned here not the label.
It's just in case some parent is thumping around the internet with their kid in tow and has the software running that looks for it...

Note to gypsy: "never post "call me a *_insert name here_* but..............." or you're bound to be called it repeatedly.
