Has it ever occurred to anyone that if "more peoplee" used msn they may be inclined to pimp their algorithms just like google? and we would have other people saying that they wished more people would use google.... its a twisted circle people!!! plus, msn does generally suck... even hotmail sucks... it got upgraded with msn live and went from crap to big pile of crap. What a twist

Google is (despite to small fire thats poofs out everytime i think about optimizing for it) pretty damn helpful if you consider that lots of people get a ton of business for free from it... what does msn do?

Don't know where you guys are getting your facts from but MSN is currently ranked #2 at Alexa ahead of google (#3), live.com is ranked 5th behind youtube, so as far as search engine pages MS has #2 and #4 and thats not too shabby.

Re: I wish more people used MSN

wait a second....

1) Alexa ranking is Alexa's best educated GUESS and in no way is it accurate of real traffic stats- ask them and they will tell you

I have a site (site A) with 1/10 of the traffic of another one of my sites (site B)  and yet site A is ranked far, far, far more favorably then site B by Alexa....so again be carefull of Alexa...it is a "somewhat helpfull indicator" but don't get too caught up in how accurate it is

2) MSN.com may get a lot of traffic (most computers come loaded with MSN as the homepage, and yes...most of the world's population is too lazy to change it). ...doesn't mean their search feature gets used as much

3) I have no issue with MSN or their search, but check our your own stats...my guess is if you rank equally as well in both MSN, Yahoo and Google you will see more visitors come from G and Y then MSN

And that's where the catch 22 situation is.......the benchmark has been set, and for search, it's google

google leads at search - google entered the industry offering search

Yahoo excels at direcries and social interaction - yahoo was the first major book mark dirctory

microsoft leads the field with home and small office software - the same field it was in when it first started

until a new way of monetizing search engines is dreamed up, no one else will bother to seriously tackle these big players

we may all profit, but they profit more.............[sounds similar to something i read once about farmyard animals and pigs ??? mmm going to go and look for similarities between the internet community and marxism, dread to think what i might find]

Correct but I wasn't talking about searches to begin with, I was talking about pure traffic, since the topic "IS" I wish more people would use MSN.   True msn search does not get nearly the kind of search traffic as Google and yahoo but they have other areas where you can capitalize on exposure.

given the topic this thread is posted in is "Other Search Engines and Pay Per Click Campaigns" then I'm guessing the context of 'use msn' is 'use msn or windows live internet search engine'

Re: I wish more people used MSN

And I guess just an aside, if you did your research first, you would have realized that msn DID have plenty of page hits but only 9% of the searches, and also that around 85% of the traffic on msn goes into hotmail. So, if you wanted to "waste" your time getting #1 at msn instead of google instead of diversifying your advertising by say, advertising on Hotmail, and concentrating on your google PR, that might be a better plan than saying "Darn I spent all this time getting to #1 on a bad search engine, I wish more people would use it."

Its like advertising in your local newspaper and not getting a good enough response, and saying well, maybe the wording of my creative is not as good as it should be, instead of advertising in say, The New York Times or Wall Street Journal where you will get more exposure.

Right, but everybody is crying into their beers that they spent all this time worrying about how they were ranked on MSN, and I was just offering a solution to monetize on MSN's huge amount of traffic instead of just wishing for the impossible.

My site is ranking similarly in both MSN and Google.

I think most people use Google out of habit as it has been the superior search engine for several years, it also has a nicer "look and feel".

correct and i started the thread.

jminkler wrote:

i spent no time and no effort on getting that result with live.com - it happened 100% natural and 100% organic so i'm really not stressed about it, my point was 'i'm surprised to be ranked that well, it's cool and it would be great if more people used live.com for search as it would be good for us'

we're top 3/4/5 for a search term on google with 104,000,000 other results, i know where to place my efforts when it comes to targeting. i've also not shed a tear over it, let alone into my beer. nor will i.

i agree with dave's 2c, move on.

Like asking for a Kleenex, not a tissue lol.

Name recognition and staying in the news helps Google.

Never heard " I am msning for... or "Need to yahoo that term...",
"Have you lived for those keywords yet????) lol

the MSN market share is interesting, considering new computers shipped with Windows also comes with IE which has MSN as default search engine as the home page....

But MSN is not billed as just a search engine, its a content based site.

yes but it has a search box right there - so I'd have thought the 'average Joe' would have just used that...
