Re: Who Uses Paypal?

I set up a PayPal accout to use for my site then I almost instantly received several of the said phishing scam emails with all the official PayPal imagery and a link to an identical in every way homepage (minus the secure "s" in the URL). Suffice to say I cancelled my PayPal account immediately and will not open another in light of the recent stories. This was actually only around 6 months ago.

Hi All

I'm a newbie to this forum but I'd like to say that I've been using PayPal very happily for about two years and no problems. It could'nt be easier to put Buy Now buttons on my site and I'm happy to refer others to PayPal. big_smile=D

Welcome to the forums!  Glad to have you here.

I too have used PayPal in various forms.  The only reason I would not use it is that many users are PayPal adverse.  I often wonder just how many people are turned away from services like the ISEDN who only use PayPal (although they are getting Stormpay soon).

Re: Who Uses Paypal?

Paypal is good payment processor.... but for no chance you should use only paypal... Always hava a backup plan,,, how are this? stormpay.com or egold.com or moneybookers.com and at least take your own bank account to receive payments. cool

Re: Who Uses Paypal?

I am not sure about Stormpay - it seems to me that any of these third party processors are going to have the same reputation as Paypal.  The next best alternative is to setup your own merchant account, which from experience can be a royal PITA.

No, but many payment processors have trouble with these countries as a lot of fraud comes from them.

Re: Who Uses Paypal?

I've had a PayPal account for several years and use it specifically for eBay purchases and sales. It makes it much easier for me to do business for the small items.

I did go through the process of linking my bank account so I could become "verified." But I had a very bad night with lots of nightmares about all my money being taken from me "accidentally." Even with all of PayPal's guarantees - nothing is impossible. The next morning I removed my bank account information.

They had an incident recently where I won an item on eBay but everytime I selected "Pay Now" I got directed to a page asking for all my bank account information. I had some very frustrating conversations with PayPal customer service where they told me an upgrade messed everything up. My time ran out on the auction and I lost the item. Oh well, probably didn't need it anyway.

PayPal added a feature where you have to enter your password everytime to do a transaction. It's the same password you log in with but you have to enter it again to process money transactions.

When I take credit cards for my company I will use a merchant account through my bank.

I've had my bank associated with PayPal for over two years now and have had no problems at all.

Personally I find PayPal to be quite convenient and try to work it into some of my applications when its available..

Re: Who Uses Paypal?

Hi All,
I am completely new to this forum and I only found it because I subscribe to SitePro news, but I found this topic of Paypal very interesting as I do know from my stats I use through statcounter that on a few occassions, some of my potential customers turned away once they got to the paypal section of the buying process.

I would like to addressmy question to Matte if I may, as I am from Australia also,

Matte,
My website only sells to the US and I use dropshipping for all of my physical products, which is the reason I use Paypal. The only other option that has been recommended to me is Worldpay which is an actual credit card merchant (they charge about $250 to set up). But I notice you mentioned that you feel the best way is to just use your bank as a merchant. I use ANZ for my business banking, but I was wondering if by using ANZ as a merchant (or any other Australian bank for that matter) would result in the merchant being wary of accepting payments purely from the US. The other issue I think of is that my customers may think being from Australia is risky to do business with because I'm offshore.

Do you sell to customers overseas and does it pose a problem from either the bank or your customers?

Best Regards
Dean

Re: Who Uses Paypal?

Hi Dean
I am with St George bank and have never had any prblems doing transactions from international customers. I also take Amex and again no problems.

However.....all transactions are completed in AU$ - so if you buy from me, I go to xe..com and do the conversion and this is the amount I transact via phone CC authorisation. I could go auto transacting but this is costly. I have never had a probelm with the bank or from a customer on this. I do find that the charge of 4.86% from St George is impactful on profits - compared to Amex only charging me 2.9%

I also make it very clear on the website that this will happen (follow the caricatures link in the sig)

I also offer paypal, but am having a horor story with them at the moment which may result in me dumping them. I'll reveal more when I have a big dummy spit on my blog.

Current ratio is 50/50 CC/Paypal

Re: Who Uses Paypal?

Moneybookers could be a pain in you know what... they require too many formalities to sign up and then if you use for personal turn to ask you to business account sooner... roll

Is there a payment processor like moneybookers where customer can send bank wires to their account and then funding to your account? I find out about xoom.com but they allow bank wires only from US..

Cheers

Re: Who Uses Paypal?

Paypal was my first payment processor-- way back in 1999, when it had just started.

I got problems after I got verified. When I logged into it when I was in Nepal, I got my account suspended. Our outsourcing company in Nepal couldn't open an account as Nepal is not listed in Paypal. So doing business with Paypal from different parts of the world (with internet it supposed to be a global village) is still not possible. Talking about fraud as mentioned in previous post, they should verify first, but let these countries do business so that it gets global.

We also have been using Stormpay for our global purpose and Ikobo.. and now Stormpay is going through a lot of problems. There are lot of new payment processors are popping up everyday and don't know which one to trust.

Paypal has gained trust though and heavily used with eBay. They have 96 million accounts. There is no alternate payment processor having that amount of user-base. So Paypal is THE BEST till now.

Has anyone heard of GBuy from Google? It is heard that GBuy from Google with compete with Paypal. With Google's challenge there may be significant changes to Paypal and other payment processors. What do you say ?

Let's wait and watch ! glad

Gbuy?  Yep, I've heard about it and wrote an article on it.

Its my contention that Gbuy is much ado about nothing.  I really don't see them as being the PayPal replacement.  I think they will take their own share of the market, but I don't see them as being a PayPal killer.  That talk seems to be coming from bloggers and pundits who want something to talk about.

Re: Who Uses Paypal?

I went thru the article and yes, you're right.. Killing Paypal will not be easy and as I mentioned in the previous post-- outbeating 96 million userbase certainly takes time and A LOT OF EFFORT for Google. And considering the fact that eBay is using Paypal-- Paypal will be the winner for long time to come.

Re: Who Uses Paypal?

I use PayPal for Ebay. I also have PayPal on a couple of sites just for donation purposes and have received a few donation from them. I would steer clear of using PayPal if at all possible on a business site but I do not see a problem in using it on more casual sites.

The above mentioned sites that I use it on are both casual sites, like one is just community information and the other is a game shard site for online gaming. I DO NOT however, leave large amounts of money in my PayPal account and I DO NOT have it connected to a bank account either.

So in short, my vote would be YES for casual money exchanges but NO for a REAL business. PayPal just looks lame, unless it is an option, but not the only option.

Re: Who Uses Paypal?

I've been using paypal for a while now.

First signed up to buy things on ebay

Then used it to sell on ebay

Then used it as a billing option on my invoices.

Now implementing it as the only method of buying products and services in a new business venture.

As a web user, designer, developer and SEO I can see things from all angles. Paypals recent developments allow people to pay via paypal without the need for a paypal account.

Their tools and support for integration into your own applications is great, probably second to none!

Pioneering companies like paypal will always be a target for unstructured criticism and malicious attacks - the best always are; and they make them selves better by rising above the sh*t thrown at them and ensuring their security is as good as it can be, protecting the people they serve.

i use it.
i like it.

for microtransactions can you really afford not to use it, i mean paypal is a household name, has millions of users and is as easy as possible for the user.

if you're a pp hater - why? it's simple, easy and quick, so you might not like it, but your customers might prefer it so for their benefit get over it tongue

Re: Who Uses Paypal?

in the 5+ years of using PayPal i've had one person write (e-mail) me to say they would not use it because of troubles they had experienced with PP and eBay. how many people didn't write who felt the same way, i have no idea. my sales are dead in the water right now, so i'm questioning everything. (admitedly, travel to Cancun seems to be dead in the water too.) so, i think i'm going to start experimenting with Google Checkout. of course, i also wonder how many people who visit my Site hate Google? glad tim
