I looked at your website concerning your ranking problems. Sad, I can't you to pop up in any of the search engines... and you're so good at writing.
First, you'll need a real host. Some people might call me a fool, but I would think that the SE's of today simply filter out freebie sites.
Second, dump the web ring, and any other affiliate programs you have running. Big no-no in G's eye's.
Third, the code under the hood is, i dunno... I wouldn't say it's terrible since technically it's functional, however getting the content to the top might help a smidge.
Fourth, the meta keywords is a bit much. Not so necessary, but it's pretty redundant on all the pages. You could leave them for the home page, but I'd delete those lines on all the other pages.
It's a pity to see you struggle, as you are such an exceptional writer, and the angle of your site is obviously something unique. You've done so much reading, studying, etc, that it would do you much good to STOP reading, and start moving forward with the things I've mentioned.
With your writing, I'm sure you could get hits for all kinds of phrasing.
Oh! This is to me! Didn't realize for a while. Doh! LOL
Actually, I'm almost ready to take my original site to a new, paid-for host. Someone on this site has, not only fixed up the site so it can shift, but has written how-to guides for me on html and css. (I'd name names, I'm so thankful, but fear he might end up having a side job that pays nothing, helping other noobs do the same thing.) With that, I think three out of four of your points are being covered. (I also believe that freebie sites don't rank well, cuz we're mostly noobs. On the other hand, one of those web rings you want me to dump, is actually mine, and most of the members are freebie sites I found through Google, so, obviously, Google doesn't hate freebies entirely.)
Which brings me to the webring. Sometimes I step away from SEO because it's almost impossible to get similar sites on the top few obvious search results. I like reading sites written for teddy bears. I don't have the room to buy a ton of bears, nor much of a desire, and I'm definitely too cheap to buy quality bears. (OF course, in my mind, there is no such thing as a bear without quality, but, if anyone has ever visited the SERP winners for "Teddy Bears" they'll understand the term "quality bear.") I want to laugh at the antics of bears living their unusual (compared to "Peoples") lives, so I assume anyone interested in my site past an accidental 3 second hit, wants the same thing I do.
The webring is to continue the laughing (or the "awwww, isn't that so cute?") with similar sites. I realize that this following statement is close to sacreligous here, but...my sites are for the pleasure of the small niche of people like me, not for Google. Granted, the ring doesn't give me many hits, however, I know that the hits that come through it are as targeted as I'll ever get. To me it is just furthering the presense of "two Internet Savvy Teddy Bears." It is, but another of my sites.
Oh, and as for affiliate programs?! That's a big no-no?! I have none now, but plan to have enough to afford the web hosting and domain name. From what I've learned so far, they do give a little side income to those who use them well. I figure if they're doing that much, they have to be getting visitors. If they're getting that many visitors, they can't be nixed by Google?! And, since Google owns one of the most widely known affiliate programs, (AdSense) why would they consider them a no-no?!
Stay tuned -- my original site will be moving probably within the next month. (It will be, but not sure how much I'm advertising it, before I can manipulate it. Since it does get updated often, I need to learn how, first.)
