My latest tinkering around has resulted in this.....
A wordpress plugin that will render your blog to a mobile phone, it has built in mobile advertising from admob.com and tries to stick to all the standards it can, ie xhtml-mp and .http://www.dev.mobi/
www.andymoore.info/wordpress-mobile-plugin
If it's any use enjoy. It might help someone go mobile with their site and turn a few dollars. Let me say we get more from AdMob than we do from AdSense.

lol most welcome, i do it because i'm lucky in the sense i love my work, i love to play with code and get it to do what i want and when i found the plugin late the other night i just went without slee and didn't stop till the plugin above was working, online and available for download to anyone who wanted it.

pleased you like. i'm raving about admob.com and love wordpress and all things mobile so i just seemed a logical step to take to add the revenue stream on there for anyone who wanted to use it.
there's only one catch with the plugin (and it can be written out easily)
my ad key will get 10% exposure, yours will get 90% of exposure.
as i said i was up all night working on that so wanted to make sure there was something in it for me, if i had to cost my time out on that one on an hourly rate i'd have been working for nowt! i may love coding stuff but if i can profiteer from it too then i'm a happy chap!
(now hurry up and get it online and start making passive mobile revenues!!!)

Andy,
Have you ever considered writing an article on how to make your site compatible for the mobile web? That's something I personally would be VERY interested in reading up on...

Hmmm, erm I thought I had explained how to do it! lol - at least on WordPress.
You've just got to think small screen, limited functionality and high access costs. Just take a look at a non-mobile site on your phone and reverse engineer the problems encountered!
But then there's so many questions, like which markup to use: WAP 1.0 (WML wireless markup language) or WAP 2.0 (XHTML-MP mobile profile) or even i-Mode (CHTML compact HTML)
To work my way around that problem my commercial WAP site renders all three depending on the specifications on the device viewing the page. I think putting that into a tutorial would be too much, it involves XML (the WURFL) WALL (Wireless abstraction language) which can either be run on TomCat or PHP. Then there's the actual creation of the pages in WALL and then rendering them on the fly in different formats.
XHTML Mobile Profile is the way to go unless you're in Japan, I might be able to knock up a basic XHTML Mobile Profile tutorial and highlight many of the best practices you can put into effect to make your site go mobile.
Afterall we should all be more mobile compatible, there's two user agents from mobile devices in the top ten browsers now so it's popularity is growing.

Well, let me ask you this - how would one 'detect' if a page is being accessed from a mobile device as opposed to the 'regular' internet.
I was at Affiliate Summit in Vegas and attended a fascinating talk on the growth of the mobile web. Its something that I'd like to know more about, especially with its projected growth. I certainly understand building a simple structure, smaller width (120 px is what I heard), but a lot of the other aspects are simply unknown to me and the amount of resources on this topic seems to be a bit lacking...

aahh so you want a how to about detecting mobile phones and pdas over normal browsers.
ok, leave it with me, month end and all that to sort.
it'll be another mini project sometime to get this sorted but i can do that!
could take me a while to get around to in, you can half bake a solution using the device's content-accept http header but i'll go deeper than that!

Hmmm... you could simply build mini flash sites.... but thats more a pda type story. The scren size to aim for is 80x80 and i wouldnt get to insens with coloring at this point... gprs is 9.6kb a second... big images are killer...
sooo... text good, images bad
but apparently its fairly easy to create, getting it out there is the tough part.
Dont know if that helps... just wanted to get my 2cents in

mini flash = flash lite = limit yet growing support
80 x 80 = too small
drinking coffee @ midnight != good idea

i figure its kinda like a real life website (ha ha) You dont make a page for 1024x768, you make it for 800x600. same with phones, on average the screen is a bit larger than 80x80 but there are still way more 80x80 screens coming out with the perdy lil phones that pretend to do cool things, a pda is 220x320 on average.... hmm... in retrospect.... 80x80 is a bit small if you are going for a more mobile web savvy audience... nobody really wants to browse the net on a tiny tiny screen. Yeah, i will leave this one to the pro's, im just an enthusiast

Haha, apologies for the delay and dragging up an old post but I did say somewhere I'd write something up and let you have the link.
PHP to detect mobile phones
