I was going through my http referrers yesterday and noticed that nearly every search referrer had come in after searching for our site name. Suggests to me that we've got our name out there at least.
Anyway, i saw one from a fairly obscure and probably hardly used search engine (compared with the rest), yet its a big enough name and well ranked website.
Again, they had searched for our name, so I followed the url to see how we faired.
4 results out of 10 on the front page and 3 others that link or mention us. highest was our homepage at 3rd.
Anyhoo, I noticed that the results linked directly to our pages and not to any kind of redirect script. All the links had nice contextual text (obviously, as it was our titles ) and the text around them was our descriptions, so again, nice and contextual.
So I thought, shall i link to this page somewhere and try and get it indexed? Would those 4 links count as backlinks? Would the 3 others that link to us gain ranking and again help us?
Sod it. I went to our aboutus.org page and stuck the link to that search result in the related links section. Then i went to another site and linked to that page.
Checked my links: in google and made a note.
Now, Google isnt exactly noted for its speed of indexing, but this morning, went to the same SE results page and everything had budged up 2 places, giving us yet another result on the page (5 in total). This site is (powered by Google) btw.
Went and ran the same search on big G and lo and behold, just 12 hours after I did this, up in the rankings!!!
I know G are doing some sort of gay dance at the moment with rankings, so do you think this is just a coincedence?

If the page that was linking to you was in the SERPs of a google powered SE then it suggests to me that the page was already indexed.
Proving a link back made it a reciprocal link.
If I'm right, be prepared for the SERPs to change again when this 'dance' is over
Anyway, isn't google 'dancing' all the time now we have everflux?
Maybe I've just mis-understood everything you just said!

Im gonna vote for coincidence... although it does seem to orcistrated to be coincidence.... the only true way to find out me thinks is to undo what you did... see the result... if it stiks, who knows, if it dissapears you know.
My up and coming... soon to be real website... www.thewebguy.co.za (one day i will finish it
