Crack sites, are they legal?
Hello,
Is it leagal to host a crack site? I recently came accross a site ppcwarez.org At Welcome you need to agree to some kind of stupid terms which means like "Police restricted here into outlaws house"
They have their files hosted in rapidshare and other file sharing sites. So is it leagal?

Dunno... ask a Cop or a Lawyer.... if there is NO actual pirated software (oinly cracks) I cannot see it as being illegal.... if it has actual pirated apps.. well then it's kinda obvious huh?

Not 100% certain, but I think they actually ARE legal.
They nearly always have a disclaimer like: "cracks and seriels listed here for information only"
etc etc.............
You'll be hard pressed to find a site that hosts cracked apps for download. That would be asking for it really.
Usually a torrent download site will offer the torrent trackers for trial apps, then a user would go to a crack site to find a way of opening the app up fully. Of course, these same torrent sites will also host trackers for fully cracked apps, or apps with the crack included in the package.
but at the end of the day, all the torrent site is hosting is the info needed to connect to the download network. And lets not forget that the DL network is virtual and created by everyone who is or has downloaded the files so is completely untraceable. Also, the law can only punish the person who makes the copy protected files available, so with torrents, there isnt a way of finding the originator.
I know that most advertising networks wont accept sites that offer cracks and seriels, but they wont allow porn either. I think it's more of a "We dont want to be affiliated with such a thing" rather than a legal issue.
So many pages, so little time.

Cracks themselves are legal (but against most web-hosts TOS), using them isn't. Making them is also a felony.
The law they wrote to make cracks and network hacking illegal is ridiculous. It definelty had selective enforcement in mind when they wrote it. It makes it a felony to even view the any part of the source code of any software without express written permission. (you know like viewing the sorce on a web page from a CMS (or any web applicationfor instance).
Can you imagine going to the joint for that (especially if it was your 3rd strike!)?

I'm pretty sure no one's been prosecuted for right-clicking yet, butthe fact that they could be is ludacris IMO.

Just makes sure your hosted in russia or armenia or china. Theres not a single crack site in a country that has rules/laws against such things (legal or not).

Cracks are 100% legal, the terms of use generally state that you must have the original software before you can use em though. The idea being that you dont want to use the disc everytime for whatever reason or you have lost the key or whatever. Making them is illegal because it involves messing with the original software and as you know thats a huge no no. The company that makes the software should have their own cracks and keygens already but i dont think they would really give it out.
Alot of the guys who crack software are based on abandoned oil rigs in international water thus making whatever they do legal. People think bill gates and oil barons have cash... these people are a fair bit more loaded. But there are still alot of em sitting in moms basement. Russia is very big on it as well, you will find that many of the sites are .ru .
Porn is an extra income.
