Can You Make Money With AdSense
I am curious if you can make enough money placing Google or Yahoo ads on your website to offset the time involved and the fact that you are deverting people from your website.
I have a jewelry website that only gets about 1200 hits a month but has been growing. I have good placement for a few of my key words on Yahoo and MSN but over the past year I have fallen off the radar with Google.
Does it make sense to add one of these to my website and if so which one would you suggest.
Also any ideas of what you can make from this would be appreciated.
Thanks for any help and Happy Holidays.

Re: Can You Make Money With AdSense
If you sell products from your website then adding PPC ads (eg Google AdSense) will only start advertising your competitors.
How does this look in the eyes of your customers? Not good is the answer, trust me!
If you run a content / info site then google adsense can pay your hosting costs at a minimum, and help supplement your income if done well.
I've worked for companies where the company made all it's money, and paid all it's employers purely from PPC revenues - they had 500 good quality MFA sites (made for adsense). infact they didn't show adsense but showed ads supplied by a whole range of PPC ad agencies (not all on the same site, you're not allowed!)
Now I have my own company where I am developing ppc and affiliate advertising for contextual advertising on services.
I have a directorship in another company that I helped developed, and just launched, called jv members, check the sig link below to see how adsense / affiliate marketing can be done (without any financial involvement as well, if you want!)

Re: Can You Make Money With AdSense
Northie,
Thank you for the advise. After asking the question I realized that this was not a good thing to do with my current website so I am thinking about doing a second website that is nothing but information on how to buy, collect and care for jewelry along with historical and other useful information.
If I was to do just this one website would the revenues possibly be worth while and what service should I consider adding ( Google or Yahoo ) ?
I was also thinking of using this new site with links to my current website that sells jewelry. Is this a sensible thing to do or is that one of those SEO things that will have Google black balling me.

Re: Can You Make Money With AdSense
OK Gold, what you're sugesting now sounds like a great idea but with some shortcomings. Won't do you any harm if it does you no good.
Build the site on a subdomain so it costs you nothing, but your time and effort.
Now, suppose you set up this site and get 1000 visitors a month. OK, suppose you get a clickthrough rate of 3%, that's 30 clicks a month. OK, suppose you get 10c per click, that's $3.00 per month. US dollars, mind you. Google holds your money till you've accumulated US$100.00. Mind you, they're good dollars. Worth more than our Australian dollars. US$100.00 is worth about AU$130.00 so it'll be good money when you get it.
Consider the following, you'll have a good idea of whether it's right or not:
1) People looking at a jewelry collecting site aren't looking to buy new jewelry. (?) Not targeted to your ads for new, big dollar jewelry. (?)
2) With jewelry being a big dollar item, the price per click could be between 50c and a dollar. You see, the ads pick up on your keywords. You'll need to study what keywords are being paid high prices for and work those words into your h1, h2 and top few lines of content.
My experience is that it doesn't work. I'm still only half way to my first cheque after about six months. Maybe you can make it work better. Hope so.
There's a fellow, Beatledave, who used to post a lot. I think he still lurks around. Well, he has an information site, might have some products also, about the Beatles. You know, the singing group!
He used to make good pocket money as I understand it, but a whole set of problems developed for him. Look him up in the member list and check out his most recent posts. If you PM or e-mail him, say "G'day" for me, would you please.
Regards,
Laurie.

Re: Can You Make Money With AdSense
Laurie,
Thank you for your imput. If all I can make is $3.00 or so per month than I can think of many better things to do with my time.
If I thought I could bring in $100.00 or so per month than it might be worth building a site for it.
I find what Northie is offering with his website interesting although i don't think I could put in the time to be writing a new article everyday .
Happy Holidays

Nice article. Thanks Matte and of course Northie. The only question left is how to determine what keywords cost higher? I have set-up a test MFA and it's not generating much since a single click sometimes costs just $0.05.

Re: Can You Make Money With AdSense
I have had a similar experience with Adsense as laurie_m. For me Adsense is just a source of small supplemental income, mostly covering the cost of domain registration and hosting. I try to minimize the space occupied by Adsense ads on the home page in order not to spook visitors away. My web site belongs to the travel industry, the average cost per click varies from $0.1 to $1.0 for me. Based on my own Adsense stats, one would need at least 5,000 visitors/day in order to earn ~$2,000-2,500/ month. Correspondingly, to earn $100/ month you would need to get at least 300 unique visitors every day.

Re: Can You Make Money With AdSense
k, how about my two cents.... no really, thats what it's worth in adsense. hahahah
Anyhow, i'm taking the back door approach for potential income. The dollar payout is far less than those listed in that previous link, but the search volume is pretty big.
The competition is pretty harsh to say the least.
Soooo... i'm building a site centered around just a couple of search terms, related to the big one. The search for those terms is pretty minimal, but show's a blip on the ovature radar.
If I can win with those smaller terms (along with a few other things), then I have a pretty good shot at climbing the ranks for a truck load of other terms along the way.
Eventually, I hope to be self employed with this, and maybe some other new ventures, within 5 years.
Yeah.... i'm taking the loooong road. But don't care.... as I have a decent job, that pays well aleady.
My site is based on a hobby of mine, so I'll have plenty of content.
Pray for me fella's... pray for me......

On one of our travel sites we get around 300 visitors a day, producing around US $300 a month, and a similar figure from CJ..

use adwords - we'll be launching www.lowcompetitionkeywords.com in the new year that integrates directly with the adwords database via their API. It's not opperational yet, but you'll get the idea if you have a look

Re: Can You Make Money With AdSense
AdSense brings us in a few thousand bucks a month which is very welcome.
One thing I have learnt from AdSense is to ignore the 'highest paying' stuff. Look at it this way, just because you have the money, doesn't mean you have to spend it, does it? G didn't get to be worth what it is by giving all its dosh away. Find a niche (trial and error) and go for it.
Our income tripled when I rearranged the pages and the colour scheme - I'm still gobsmacked at the difference that made.
We are also with Commission Junction and Tradedoubler. I have to say that I find the latter is more productive but perhaps that's because we are aiming more at the UK market.

Re: Can You Make Money With AdSense
Theres a good note Etcetera..... Scheme of the site.
In the market niche I'm targeting... all the top ten sites are ugly as sin. Some look like they've been made by a third grader. So part of my staying power has been invested in the 'look'.
The other sites are all dark, black backgrounds, etc. But mine is bright, and according to a friend of mine......
"Holy shit dood!!! It looks like we PAID someone to make this!!!"
I wouldn't go as far as saying 'pro', but in comparison to the other sites.... I blow them out of the water. I'm hoping this will be my 'staying power', and hopefully click through rates will increase.
On the other hand... I've been to sites where i've clicked on the ads, just to get the fu@$$ away from that god awful creation.
We'll see if my experiment works.

Re: Can You Make Money With AdSense
Google-a pay per click scam? It is my opinion to say YES!
I had heard about this prior to signing up with Google's Ad pay per click program but I figured it was just a sour grapes story. Until it happened to me, this is what happened. I signed up and got approved for their pay per click advertising program, after I made a few dollars they decided to claim I made the clicks myself. After which Google shut down my account permanently banned me from the program and to top it off, took the money I had earned and claimed it was going back to the advertiser. They notified my via email, withthe option to apeal and beg for mercy, which I did. I had to swear that I didn't make those clicks myself and that I would not allow myself or webmaster to make any clicks etc. YadaYadaYada, which I did, then they turned around again and slapped me in the face to say "No, you are still permanently banned." Well! That okay I have found another company to deal with and amazingly have not had any such issue.
Has this sort of thing happened to anyone else? Did you ever get the money you earned? Or did Google use your site for free advertising for a short while as well? That short while ads up if they are doing it repeatedly.
Thanks in advance for your input,
SaveDeborah

Re: Can You Make Money With AdSense
There seems to be some dicrepency between the facts as given in different places on the web.
After a paperwork mix-up last winter, the U.S. Immigration Office denied residency status to Nigerian-born biology major Deborah Umunnabuike, ’07, revoking her financial-aid, loan, and scholarship eligibility. To pay off her $15,000 college debt and return to school this year, she launched www.savedeborah.com, where donors can contribute to her tuition fund. By late August she had raised $400….
I know you are wondering- How does a single person run up $43,000 dollars in credit card debt? Well let me begin my story by saying I am a hard working American and I have worked hard for what I want and I am not one to beg for what I can work for. But I have found myself so far in over my head that I have to reach out to you for mercy and benevolent help.
I have raised a fine young man by myself on a very low income and paying as I spent. I had little to no debt. The only expenses I would pay in installment were the necessities like rent and car payment or doctor bills so my credit was pristine. Thats why the credit card offers came rolling in and because I needed the extra cash access I took advantage of these offers. Oh boy did I. Well my son is grown up now and he is serving our great country in the US Navy. He is such a fine young man, I think I did a great job raising him as a single Mom. The only problem was there was no money for a college education for him, so off to war he had to go. He has been to the Persian Gulf and will be heading back out there again in 2007. He is doing well, no real threat of danger as of yet. We have been blessed thus far in that regard.
There also seems to be a bit of spamming of the forum going on.
Regards,
Laurie.
