I want to start a new website and I need users to post theyr home videos. How can I convert those videos (that will be in various formats: .avi .mpg ...) to .swf (something like youtube) so that anyone to be able to see those clips in the browser.

Can you tell me is there is a server-side script that automaticly convert those videos? I am verry interested.

hmm... I checked the tool you told me about but it seems that I have to convert by hand every movie my users will upload... do I got it wrong? also, I understand from this website that are supported only open-source codecs.

if it's server side you can manipulate it from a script, it can be automated.

some codecs are free, some are commercial

you do of course realise you will be opening your site up to mass porn videos if its automated?

I realize... but at youtube every movie uploaded is checked by a human? I want to be able to aprove or reject one video or another. anyway.. I will thnik about the porn problem after I will create a working sistem... can you give me a tip?

im sure there must be some sort of human filter at youtube, i cant give you a straight answer though as im not all that knowledgable about web2 online media. I do however know that most of it is flash based (youtube) so look into flash to start you off.

hello i am also interested in this topic. for me i would start with a basic google search or perhaps some of the adaware or shareware sites 2 of witch i have found useful in the past are majorgeeks or tudogs.Goodluck let me know how you get on as i will be doing the same shortly just short on time at present .

youtube use an algo to transform all kind of videos users uplod in flash filles so that all viisitors to be able to vatch the movies using only the flash plugin. that is what I want to do.

As to checking/approval of videos, I'm pretty sure they rely on their user base to mark videos as inappropriate content... depends on the nature of users you wish to appeal to ultimately.
