Google Get's Personal

http://www.site-reference.com/articles/ … lized.html

Can some one shut Kim Roach the hell up for me?? The last time she did this I ranted a bit and even tried emailing her (no answer... yeeesh)

People, I have said it once.. I shall say it again.. Don't go assuming because G put out some Patents that it is THE WAY THINGS ARE...

It is shoddy journalism and link bait.. it is misleading....  I am angry now.. Once I get some work done.. I shall revisit this sad state of affairs....  I shall put some articles/posts of Kim and others that like to play the G patent game and assume they can see the future...

This is a dangerous game.....  I have been nice.. tried politly to start a dialigue with Kim.. The gloves are off now...  grrrrrrrr

Count the instances of 'could' and 'may' but then it has other points of being authoratative and telling us what to do and what the future is.... and what we should be doing. Isn't that a bit of a logical falacy?

1. It steams me when folks write about Patents without the caveat that certain aspects MAY or MAY NOT BE in play... it is important.. you could develop a strategy around something that may never happen.  Even if it IS in play, it may never leave beta... ( Google Answers just got tanked)...

2. Smells like link bait because the above is not in play

3. ALWAYS answer Dave's kind inquiries.. or face the wrath...

A rant on my personal site to follow...  just don't have the time right now grrrrr... but it has to be done (again - ranted when she went on about Human Editors last time)

...ok... gotta get some work done

Re: Google Get's Personal

I got as far as

Traditional algorithmic search engines have reached their peak. Personalized search is a natural and necessary progression for Google and other search engines as well.

before steam started coming out of my ears.

The first sentence of that citation - you can't get more subjective, yet it's said with such authority, it makes we weep.

I've not seen the Kim Roach Search Engine, have you?

I hate the idea personalised search - too much control in the hands of the SE

I want raw, unbiased results, so that I can decide which is of most interest to me - and so should you!

As TheGypsy says, if a patent has been filed it is in no way a guarantee that it is being implemented.

Hell, I knew someone who spent his life filing patents, and then selling them on.

All a patent does is limit the use of it's implementation by the competition - that you can be sure of.
What the limitations are, I cannot say.

Re: Google Get's Personal

Here's an idea

A way to improve search results and even go someway to keep webmasters happy

A search engine could repeat the search with different filters applied, or different weights applied to the different filters.

For example, there would be abutton saying 'I hasn't hapy with these results - try again'

This doesn't give page 2 of the SERPs, but page 1 of a search for the same term, with a different set of filters. One could keep clicking the button until a desired result set is found.

Example - I may be searching for independant product review for product X
the term "Independant review for X" is unlikely to yeild what I want as the keyword 'indepentanr' is unlike ly to be on the page, or in the links to that page. It's also unlikly that the LSI would pick it up.
I would expect to be given product X for sale ads, biased reports and MFA sites promoting X.
By requesting different filters be applied I may get the results I want

Re: Google Get's Personal

I came racing over here to post on this article, but gypsy beat me to it!

Let's just say that Google really is planning a sea change in this direction, just for discussion.

It would be their death knell. People would flee that kind of invasion of privacy, in droves.

Not only the privacy issue,... BUT also the "people-are-so-stupid-that-we-must-do-their-thinking-for-them! Remember about 16 years ago, when Honda, and a bunch of others, starting making their seatbelts automatic? As soon as you closed the car door, the seatbelt thing would come whizzing around the side of your head. Nobody bought those cars except the rental companies.

Now the SE's are gonna help us do our thinking "based upon past behavior". Like, uh, human beings only express limited behaviors/interests??

The author (I don't want to give her that much ipub, so I refuse to type her name) also makes an aggregious suggestion that SERP's will be based on high PR, with lower PR's coming in way at the bottom of a search, OR won't be listed at all.

Talk about a SCARE TACTIC??

This woman needs to be hung out and dried.furious

Kind regards,
Lyn

Re: Google Get's Personal

Well, I just went over and read the patent application:

Here's one direct quote, from the "Description" part:

"One way to order documents is the PageRank algorithm more fully described in the article "The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Search Engine" by S. Brin and L. Page, 7.sup.th International World Wide Web Conference, Brisbane, Australia and U.S. Pat. No. 6,285,999, both of which are hereby incorporated by reference as background information."

Oh, Gypsy, this would turn our PR understanding (the notion that's its worthless) on its head.

Honestly that Patent App. scares the heck out of me! Too creepy for words.

Kind regards,
Lyn

Re: Google Get's Personal

S. Brin and L. Page did dream up the original page rank formula

this has very little to do with toolbar PR and a modification of this patent is still used as one of over 100 factors in deciding the SERPs

Isn't that the definition of "advance search?"

I like to search for other fun teddy bear sites. If I type in "Teddy Bears," the results always include Vermont Teddy Bear Factory, Boyd's, Build-a-Bear Worshops, and lots of Teddy Bear Artists. When I go into "advance search," I add "-sell, -sale, -artist. I then look at the new results or research the previous results. Then, I find out what they all have in common that I'm not interested, go back into "advance search," and add more filters, until I start coming up with pages that are more about the fun of bears then the business or sales of bears. Seems to me, the search engines already have the ability, they just might want to make it more obvious for new searchers.

As for patenting intrusive info gathering tactics -- technically, I hate the idea, and run my Spybot about once a week to stop it. On the other hand, I have a gmail account, so get the spying anyway from Google in my gmail. I probably should resolve that paradox in my personality, before wagging my finger at Google for considering something I already let them do. surprised

Ummm, Dave?! She is a co-writer on a blog, and if you click her link under her picture, you can find her entries. There is always leaving a comment on her entries. Then again, this article isn't included in her entries on that Blog. (Bet she listened to Northie about not repeating the same thing on her own Blog.) And don't forget -- breathe in, breathe out, slowly breathe...calm down. Don't worry -- anyone naive enough to believe every word, will come to learn the truth, sooner or later. It happens. I'm proof. blinka

I paused at the same statement that Northie did, and zipped over to here to see if the Dave bait snagged ya yet. applause

Re: Google Get's Personal

I simply am not going to bother.. I am an ASS U see, run afowl of me once, and the elephant never forgets

I crossed horns with a few folks since I 'went public' earlier this year... ran into one so called 'expert' the other day that seems not to remember our encounter and was set back by my barbs at he... oh well... others... have offended me by not returning emails or being arrogant and curt when they did...

..and I am not shy.. I have contacted at one time or another.. Matt Cutts, Danny Sullivan, Mike Grehan,Jill Whalen, Phil Craven, John Andrews, Bruce Clay (staffer), Jim Hedger, Stoney G deGeyter and others....  ( Earl Grey? hee hee -- makes a fine cuppa')

Some were pleasant folks and others.. well a little high on the ol horse... ( not saying which). So I keep notes. As my world grows.. there are those I respect.. and those I do not....

Kim I have never actually spoken with, though I tried.. I doubt she'd be happy about my rants anyways.. so there is little point in persuing since I am already running to the Max with my time .... waaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh
