Well… I think the gang here at SR (Nic and Mark) thought I had been away for too long (moving and all) so they published some ‘Dave Bait’ right at the top of this weeks Newsletter… gee thanks guys… still trying to get my life back together here… jeezz….
So I started read “Looking Beyond SEO” and was captivated. A technical marvel of a piece of marketing yumminess… fortunately there writing style is at least interesting (oops… he’s a copy writer for a living methinks).
I particularly liked the part about how SEO activities are “sapping energy, causing breakdowns in family relationships, and being responsible for the onset of male pattern baldness” – Cute… but I have a great head of hair ---- weeeeeeee
Right off the bat we have;
The ultimate goal for the vast majority of websites is to either make money or promote a service that makes money
Certainly is. That’s why SEO is important. It has been proved time and time again that it is the greatest return on the marketing dollar (ROI) in Search/Web marketing. This is essential when one wants to MAKE MONEY online.
Moving along;
Search engines rely on mathematical algorithms to determine the quality of your site whereas the visitor relies solely on personal opinion.
And some 70% of those ‘visitors’ rely on Search engines to find websites/information/products.
next time you’re attempting to inject 2 or 3 more instances of key phrases like “California Mesothelioma lawyer attorney” into your content
– you know you have been using KEI tools and ran into a ‘seeded list’ tsk tsk… see; googletestad
Conversion rates are not a part of SEO but should be a part of your business strategy.
This is certainly ‘Beyond SEO’ and should be studied, it is not, however, a replacement or symmetric consideration… it then goes on about other conversion/analytics stuff….
Banners and Text advertising. Ok, the Text Ads I can live with…. BANNERS?? What is this… 2004?
Offline advertising? Certainly a consideration for those with a budget, but even websites that do, have SEO programs in place already…. Break out the cheque book on that idea…
So in the end I think it is a tad skewed and the direction of the piece wanders. Considering that SEO (organic search marketing) is still the most powerful (68% of users always use the organic results) method of internet marketing, some more care should have been addressed to this value BEFORE moving on to OTHER ideas for the webmaster. Instead it alludes to methods with poorer ROI may in fact have an equal or stronger value..
It’s not all together bad, just not strong enough in any one area to be useful (SEO, conversions, off line advertising)

I think your post here simply prompted my mind with several more questions, from alternative views.
Perhaps it's nothing......
