I'm often asked for links. I'm asked to link to someone default, or 'home' page.
Lots of people spend a great deal of time, money and effort in promoting the home page of their sites and tend to concentrate their SEO efforts there as well.
But,
Is your home page the most important page on your site?
Don't just answer blindly - think about it. What does your home page offer that your product pages or sales page does not?
Check your web logs, what are your entry pages?
Think about your site structure - the conversion path you have in mind may not be applicable to those who enter your site elsewhere..
You have two options
1 - go with the flow of your site visitors, optimise the conversion path (and the pages on it) based on how users find your site
2 - re-optimise your site in an effort to force visitors to follow the conversion path you want.
The choice is yours

I just optimise all my primary pages... birds... animals... home page.. lodges.... cuisine.... then i optimise all the smaller pages within the big pages. Takes a whole lotta time but just about all of my pages are indexed and found for there unique content.
The trick ive discovered is to generalise on the primary pages and get more specific on your way down. Works like a box a brooklax and 20L milkshake, quick and effective.
My up and coming... soon to be real website... www.thewebguy.co.za (one day i will finish it

Most of the money, for me, comes from the 'bottom level' pages.
My conversion path is short, so I optimise all these sub pages for their keywords and get the business done.
My home page(s) are very general, but all on theme, the mid level pages a bit more specific and the 3rd level, where the money is, are very well optimised and all my link building concentrates on those.
seems to work a treat
Northie,
From an SEO standpoint this is good as well. It used to be better to point people to your home page, but the engines have adjusted to recognize that natural links tend to go to specific pages within your site (at least a certain % of inbound links). I spend a great deal of my link development time developing inbound links to subpages on my sites...
