web 2.0 is total bullmyth, it doesn't exist.
yes sites are taking user generated content in realtime and doing funky stuff with it but the core of 2.0 is the manipulation of objects within the document, the dom. this is all done with javascript so it's hardly breaking new ground.
take javascript, standards based html, css, image opacity, php or server side platform of your choice and you have all the elements of a 2.0 site. oh, a star, the word beta and pink logo with flickr style r is essential! lol
coolest part of all of this i think is ajax, remote calls on the back end of a page thanks to client side scripting, javascript's xmlhttprequest and variants are all old technology though so 2.0 isn't something to get excited over unless you can think of new tricks the old dog can do!
i got carried away with web 2.0 on a side project which is now overdue. check out blogging by phone.
the only problems facing 2.0 sites are old browsers, accessibility and how the site performs in a noscript environment.
try the blogging by phone site with and without javascript to see two different sites and two very different levels of functionality.

I like M1s definition - the web as an application platform - this is the what
mobtex's comments are along the lines of how and the results are indeed pretty funky
As for fad or futue - I think it's the future, with some service providers hoping athat all you'll need is a web browser and all your applications, documents, etc will be hosted remotely on their OS.......cool if you then take into account that light projecting pen shaped computer that cropped up a few weeks ago..........

my understanding is that web 2 is more about websites that provide audience participation, hence flickr, myspace, nowpublic - wikipedia was perhaps the first major example.
One COULD say blogs as well, but they can be hard to get participation happening.
Forums also?

I agree... future is the likely outcome... online applications are peachy but there are going to have to be some huge improvements in internet security... stable connections... and connection speeds. I reckon it would be to expensive to be in the near future. Plus, the pen pc, if hardware is becoming so much more in so much less space, we wouldnt need remotely run apps. Just asyncronis transfer rates... nice.

Greater participation does seem to be a general trend. The success of myspace and blogs are two excellent examples.

he he... Ha ha.... MWAH HA HA HA!!!
You are quite right matte.... i am responsible for some of that crap, i created a profile for my company in myspace cause i figured some back links from myself wouldnt hurt (i felt naughty doing it but poo happens). It is rubbish, mostly for kids i think... so the future comes... where children do not meet in person, there friends are determined by an online personality and picture.
"TIMMY-063: What do you mean you dont want to go cyber with me DIPSY! your such a prude!"
"DIPSY-RACK: You know i want to... but your father is still awake honey."
"MSN: '-TIMMY-063 has left the chat-room-' "
Do you feel safe with web 2?

I'd never been to myspace before today.
I went there because I was bored and had heard people mention it

The fact that online forums exist demonstrates the logic behind the concept of web 2.0.
What ever tag it's given - it's being heavily promoted into european business at management level - and is great for the smaller business building online networks.
