*** READ THIS BEFORE ASKING FOR A SITE REVIEW! ***
****FOR PEOPLE SEEKING A REVIEW
Site-Reference members are very helpful and they will take a lot of their personal time to give you their advice.
If you wish to post a “Site Review” we ask that you do the following:
1) Reply to their posts within 48 hours.
2) Please only post 1 Site for review at a time.
3) Post 3 quality reviews of other sites prior to posting yours for review (3 posts total will do).
I would like to elaborate on #3 above: we request that you help out by providing 3 quality reviews. We are asking this to help increase the numbers of reviews that are given. This means that when you get around to posting your site for review you will get more responses (and after all that’s the goal).
IMPORTANT: We have created an algorithm to determine what counts towards a quality (ie. useful) review. Although it is very hard for an algorithm to measure what is valuable or not, we were able to give it some parameters which we thought were characteristics of a “valuable review” such as “word count” for example – so a review like “nice site” of 2 words would not be considered quality
If you have a hard time guessing what a quality review should be- just ask yourself this:
“What types of reviews would I like to receive for my site”- if you can do that you should have no problem.
If you do not feel like doing any of the above, we will assume your post is spam and delete it. So don’t waste your time and ours. Also please keep in mind you are posting your site for review and a certain level of criticism is to be expected. If you do not want your site criticized then this isn’t the place for you.
****FOR REVIEWERS:
You all dedicate so much time helping people and we thank you for that! However some people are just looking for backlinks and we don't want you to waste your time so as Matte suggested we propose the following:
1) once someone asks for a review only 1 person reply
2) if the person that made the original requests replies and seems honestly interested in your help then ALL our welcome to review
3) if no reply is given within 4 days please REPORT this to a Mod and we will assume the original post was spam and delete it
Thank you for taking the time to read this,

Re: *** READ THIS BEFORE ASKING FOR A SITE REVIEW! ***
This is all fine and good, but I have a couple of questions:
1. How do we monitor who makes the 1st post? Some of us catch things others don't catch during the review process.
2. What if a person posts their site for a review and can't, for some unforeseen reason, can't make it back to the Forum to see the response(s), only to find their post is gone -- IMO, this alone may upset some potentially good members and they might not return.

Re: *** READ THIS BEFORE ASKING FOR A SITE REVIEW! ***
Couple good Q's TA and hopefully these answeres can shed some light....
1) Having just 1 reply is merely as suggestion. People are free to spend their time as they wish and if mutliple people want to offer their advice right away that's not a problem. We suggested 1 reply until we see some comitment on the part of the review request as a means not to waste your time responding to potential spammers. No system will be perfect, just trying to come up with guidlines that will benefit all.
2) Personally i think the odds of this happening are next to none. Usually people reply to a site review request pretty quickly. So if you post a review request stick around for a little bit (help some other members) and you should get feedback soon which you can at least reply and say "thanks to". Chances of someone posting a review then not being able to check the net at all over the next four days is unlikely in my opinion.(originally we were thinking of setting this to 7 days but having to go back that far and check for replies is a pain).
Hope that helps

Re: *** READ THIS BEFORE ASKING FOR A SITE REVIEW! ***
Okay; maybe the "once someone asks for a review only 1 person reply" needs to be re-worded for clarity, as I understood it to mean only 1 reviewer can respond ... everyone comes in at different hours during a 24-hr period; just didn't want everyone to think that only 1 person could review / make comments.

Re: *** READ THIS BEFORE ASKING FOR A SITE REVIEW! ***
G'day Travelagent.
I think you make a good point but I also think we can get over the problems:
2. What if a person posts their site for a review and can't, for some unforeseen reason, can't make it back to the Forum to see the response(s), only to find their post is gone -- IMO, this alone may upset some potentially good members and they might not return.
1) The number of people who make their first post to a new forum and can't get back in four days will be small.
2) If they are forwarned of this consequnence, most will make the effort, the others will understand that it's their problem and respond accordingly. This might mean posting again.
If they know they can't get back for over four days, they can say so in their post. But fair go. It's not an unreasonable expectation that if a member is going to spend half an hour reviewing their site, that they would respond within four days.
You know, I often think back to when I first joined the forum. I didn't know much at all about web building then.
I asked a quite basic question about getting my text to display correctly in tables using a snippit of css code.
Well, I came home from work the next afternoon and switched on the computer. Surprise, surprise! There it was! A reply to little old me from someone way out there on the world wide web. I was stoked that I mattered to someone who didn't know me, sufficiently that they would go to the trouble of giving me the links to four tutorial sites dealing with my insignificant question. I've still got those sites bookmarked.
And who was it who warmly welcomed me and set me so much homework? Why, it was none other than our good friend Travelagent himself. Thanks again for that initial kindness and helpfulness, TA.
Here's the link to that thread: http://forums.site-reference.com/viewtopic.php?id=837
Then there was Matte's little joke about head scratching while learning css. True, true!
In the current, new set of guidelines, we are trying to deal with people who take advantage of the generosity of others. People who are genuine can accept this and will not be offended.
Regards,
Laurie.

G'day Laurie -- thanks for the kind kudos ... if we weren't so far apart by distance, I'd buy a few pints!
You took your "homework lessons" very well, and have improved remarkably over time -- even caught me off-guard a few times with your improvements ... I salute you for "jobs very well done!"

Re: *** READ THIS BEFORE ASKING FOR A SITE REVIEW! ***
Here comes the S.A. perspective again... if someone puts there site up for review it is only logical they will be keeping an eye on it, i know because i built my first site four months ago, and i was all over any site that i thought would look twice. So it makes perfect sense that any decent person would stick around or regularly check up to see what others think (Plus the advice from Gypsy, Wiz and Bjer kept me coming back in the beginning). They shouldnt ask if they dont want an answer.... dang dog gone spammers done be ticklin me all up da wrong side o da fence!
Next point... who builds a website and just happens to have four day intervals between going online? Thats just silly, i say you give em a 24hr period from the first reply, if they take longer than that they cant be all that enthusiastic or interested in how they can improve their site. Maybe 48hrs, cause they may have dialup
,
in the end, what it really comes down to, in my opinion... if they arent enthusiastic,or interested enough to get back here at least a day after asking for a review.... scrap em, I enjoy the fact that all the members here are helpful and keen, some a wee bit arrogant but always keen to help none the less. Even im mildly and indirectly insulting at times but im always keen for anything i may be able to assist in. If there are chops with no interest clogging up forums for days at a time things could get messy... like... clogged.
Cant you set up a Warning popup about this for when people click on the review my site and introduce yourself pages?

If you wish to post a “Site Review” we ask that you do the following:
...
3) Post 3 quality reviews of other sites prior to posting yours for review (3 posts total will do).
How come this doesn't say "demand"?
I posted three good reviews (IMO) and am still getting an error saying I cannot post a request to review my site.
It is pissing me off. I want some constructive criticism too, dang it!
"Ask" does not mean "You MUST do this, or we will prevent you from participating at all".

Re: *** READ THIS BEFORE ASKING FOR A SITE REVIEW! ***
Asking.
I have reviewed four other websites already, and the algorithm still has me locked out.
Edit:
It finally let me post, with a postcount of 18 and four reviews. Meh... *shrugs*

Re: *** READ THIS BEFORE ASKING FOR A SITE REVIEW! ***
it takes lot of trouble with some people when doing so with different technical problems, hence they may lost the link to post review their sites.

Re: *** READ THIS BEFORE ASKING FOR A SITE REVIEW! ***
My opinion is just based on my experience,
there are many forums in which the post or the review rezuest just dies off.. of course their are notification options but not everyone is aware of it at the very start.
probably the first thing someone comes and does on site-reference is- submit to site review... that is the main attraction, I stuck to site reference because I had generous reviews of my site at the first place... When I joined I wasn't even forum user. But now I try to contribute and gain alot from it. If my post was deleted on the very first instance I would have never come back again.
The trust is not built in 48 hours so I would suggest to drop this policy to remove the post and consider a new user as spammer. In my perspective, many people who are not at fault may also suffer.
Ya, the 3 post before the review is a very good move... that would really yield more reviews and help.
Happy referencing to all,
Cheers.

Re: *** READ THIS BEFORE ASKING FOR A SITE REVIEW! ***
I cant agree. there are way more spammers than actual people wanting reviews, that justifies it for me.... Although it isnt nice to see stuff vanish without explanation (even though reading would help alot!)... soooo... after lots of muddling about in php and perhaps a bit of help from Northie how about installing a script to grey out the link to site reviews for "new members" until the quota is reached... or just send an automated message to there email addy?
everyones happy.. spammers would be stumped (except for the die hards) and you fancy admin people can breath

Re: *** READ THIS BEFORE ASKING FOR A SITE REVIEW! ***
hehe...nothing like a good brew on Tuesday morning
thanks STILL but no need for a beer- just glad we can help!
In any case when we created this rule, we wanted people to provide 3 “valuable” reviews..
…it is however very hard for an algorithm to measure what is valuable or not…so we gave it some parameters which we thought were characteristics of a “valuable review”…
…some of the characteristics include the length of a post…so for example a 10 word post such as this...
"that is so pretty! I hope you do very well!"
would not go towards your 3 review count. This doesn’t mean that your posts have not been helpful…it just means that our system is currently setup to not count some of them
This is a new system and we’re adjusting it so that it benefits everyone in the end
For now I would consider adding just a touch more information to the posts you have made and this should “unlock” your ability to ask for a review yourself
Sorry about the confusion and thanks for your understanding
Nic
