Don't expect more than 0.1% of emails sent to be responded to, when sending a mass-mail.
As for sales copy, I can't help - I cringe at all the suggestions i've read and rarely open any mass sent mail sent to me

There is not going to be any 1 thing you do that instantly brings traffic and interest to your site. You will come to learn in the marketing business that everything changes, almost daily. Sending out 1 mass email probably won't bring but a very small amount of traffic to your site. What you have to do is TEST, TEST, TEST.
Begin Your Email Campaign
Come up with 5 different subject lines for an email campaign. Divide your email list into 5 equal parts (you don't want them too small though, so if its only reasonable to split it three ways, you only need 3 different subject lines). Now, send THE SAME newsletter/email to each new list, but each list gets a different subject line.Example: You have a list of 5 million. Dividing that list into 5 parts, you have five 1 million-email lists. Send each list the same newsletter, separate subject lines.
First List: Subject Line 1, Email 1
Second List: Subject Line 2, Email 1
Third List: Subject Line 3, Email 1
Fourth List: Subject 4, Email 1
Fifth List: Subject 5, Email 1
Now, once you send out the email to the five lists, sit back and give it time. From my own experience, I've seen an email campaign bring in sales for well over a month after it was sent. You will most likely not want to wait this long, and you shouldn't have to. Give it about a week to two weeks, and look at your stats. Look at the opens for each list, how many sales that particular list has brought in (if you are not selling anything, find a way to track how many visits to your page each list has brought in), and comapre it. You will find a variance in your results. Example: Two weeks after your email was sent to the five lists, you see results like this.
First List: 10,000 opens/500 page visits/click thrus
Second List: 13,000 opens/900 page visits/click thrus
Third List: 7,000 opens/150 page visits/click thrus
Fourth List: 22,0000 opens/1300 page visits/click thrus
Fifth List: 9,000 opens/800 page visits/click thrus
Obviously, the Fourth List was the best. By looking at data like this, you can see that the Subject Line you use for the Fourth List caused more opens than any other. Since each list received identical content, you can be sure of this.
Next, take your top 2 subject lines (Fourth List and Second List in above example) and send each list another email (make SURE you update your email list to remove unsubscribe requests and then re-divide the total list of subscribers into two new lists). So, now you have New List 1 and New List 2. With this test, you want to send an ALMOST identical email out to your subscribers. Change one thing, like the main headline in the email, or a picture, something small, not a drastic change. Now, this email campaign should be something like this.Example: New email campaign with updated email list. Each list (New List 1 and New List 2 each have 2,250,000 emails - 500,000 have been removed from the original 5 million per their opt-out request).
New List 1: Subject Line 2, Email 2
New List 2: Subject Line 4, Email 3
Now, wait again and view your numbers. Something like this:
Example: Second email campaign was launched two weeks ago, you see results like this.
New List 1: 29,000 opens/1100 page visits/click thrus
New List 2: 25,000 opens/2300 page visits/click thrus
Now, looking at that you see that even though List 1 had more opens, List 2 brought you more page visits. Continuous testing of every aspect of your marketing campaign is key to staying on top of the game and achieving your best ROI.
